Multiple Bids

I have an item for sale via auction. This afternoon I noticed that there were 17 bids all by the same bidder at roughly 30 second intervals. All the bids are showing the same price £1.04! What is going on here?

17 bids is excessive but they're increasing their max bid.   The actual price won't go up until someone else bids against them.

It is sometimes done to put off other bidders. 

The increases in the bids may not be much, but until there is a second bidder price will not increase.

I see that someone else has bid. For all that effort, the first bidder only bid £4.50.

Yep, 17 bids at roughly 20p / 30p increments. What a waste of time!
