Ebay Simple ( Dumb ) Shipping

Hello All

My recent experience of accidental use of "Simple" shipping .

I list item for sale BIN and thought I had added a SIGNED for service.

The item is £600 .

The item sells. I go to set up postage appropriate to an Item of such value.

For me this can ONLY be signed for. In as much as if a courier leaves a parcel outside a house without a signature of receipt  theat parcel is subject to the whims of the local criminal opportunist and is thus a gamble on my behalf as to where it ends up. Pretty much indisputable I would say.

Ebays simple postage option provided with no alternative to me is 48 hout tracked UNSIGNED for .

I presume ebay have done the calculations and are willing to process lost stolen parcels given the profit they must make on their postage deal. And thats up to them as they are a business and looking to maximise their profit above all .  There recon on 90% of parcels arriving and have some insurance to cover loss etc.

It does seem a little foolish and I dont want to take that risk.

My solution  : Add my postge cost to item . and then sell .Accept provided lablel , do not use provided label . Use my own service and update tracking afterwards to my own ( insuring I get paid after it arrives ) The buyer receives the refund on postage.

As I say loosing parcels for £600 to chance seems a little foolish. When does it choose to get a signature based delicery service ?!

Dave

Simple Delivery covers your item up to £750 for loss, or damage during transit.

Items over £750 will not be eligible for SD.

Yes I get the fact that they cover items. This is not my concern .

My concern is the item getting to the buyer. A signature makes that considerably more likely than the gamble.

This is also without considering the opportunist buyer that just claims they didnt receive it.

I presume that I wou;ld still have to prove my case to ebay that it was sent and wait for months to get my money back. Just without being able to get involved in any way .

Whatever way you must agree that leaving £600 worth of goods outside for the sake of selecting the right service ( remember that there is a signed for service for a few pence more available from royal mail ) seems foolish.

Let alone reducing the chance of the parcel arriving if ebay selects a ultra low cost cowboy affair such as Evri to handle your parcels.

The services ebay gets off RM under SD are very different to the ones normal retail customers get hence the different cover levels.

Ebay says sellers will be protected for item not received cases when they use SD.  We don't know how that will work.

When you say " very different " I'm not sure what your evidence is for this is ?

They may have a different contract yes. I'm not sure if the compensation is payed by ebay or Royal Mail .

Ultimately the postperson will be doing the same job and an unsigned for parcel will be left on a doorstop like any other.  If this is the case and the compensation is probably covered by ebay and is based on the statistical analysis of success and loss of delivery. The money made on the parcel deal ( we pay more and RM get less ) will cover the loss . That would allow ebay to not care so much about the parcels that dont arrive .

However I am concerned about if my parcel arrives .  Fingers crossed I can continue to use my choice of delivery.
