Blade classification

I think ebay has gone mad ! The classification for blades seems to be done by ai, not human, so you have to age verify to buy hedgecutter, grass trimmer, hacksaw blades, but not chainsaw saw chains, certain planer blades.

There is just no consistency to it !

Why ?

And age verification via credit card only, not everyone has a credit card, I don't. So why isn't there other options for this to go with the policy ?

Blade classification

Yep, you're not the only one feeling angry and bemused at some of the choices eBay have made classifying some items as ' bladed'.

It seems eBay's definition of a bladed item has expanded to include items that are sharp and pointed and could be used for causing injury, even if they don't traditionally fall into the category of a knife.

This is their latest announcement on the subject:

Keeping shoppers and sellers safe: Buyer age-verification for bladed items

To help keep buyers and sellers safe, we’ve expanded safety requirements for selling bladed items on ebay.co.uk, with the introduction of buyer age-verification to cover more potentially dangerous items. If you sell bladed items on ebay.co.uk, you need to:

  • Add an age-verified delivery option. Choose a delivery service that requires age verification on receipt.
  • Correctly package the bladed products, and clearly label the parcel to indicate there are bladed items inside.
  • Ensure your packages are delivered to buyers in person, not to parcel lockers, collection points or via local pick up.

Please note that the sale of many types of knives and bladed items is already prohibited on eBay. However, legal bladed products for sale in the UK can be sold to customers who are 18 and over. Proof of age will be required at checkout. You can learn more about adding age-verified delivery options to your listings on our Seller Centre page.

eBay's only form of age verification accepted is a credit card,  as anyone of any age can own a debit card.

Members are telling us they are asking friends / family members who do have a credit card on their eBay account to buy these items for them,  not ideal I know , but it is a workaround.
