The postage doesn't go through your account if you use Simple Delivery - that is a transaction between Ebay and the buyer.
So, although I am not certain, I would guess that Ebay would refund the buyer the total amount they paid, including Buyer Protection Fee and the charge for SD.
I can understand why you are asking, but it is not something you are involved in.

If the buyer opened a "not received" case they should have got a full refund inc the cost of "simple delivery" postage from ebay. If the seller bought different postage the buyer will still get a refund for the unused SD postage but not for 30 days.

You are correct the buyer contacted me because he did not want me to loose, and confirmed he had been refunded the full amount he had paid.
I don't see why ebay does not tell seller that the full amount has been refunded as the message leaves in doubt if it has.

eBay's messages always leave a lot to be desired / understood! 🤔
One which really needs rewriting id the .... ' buyer has reached out to us...' message every time a generic message is sent to or from the buyer. This has everyone confused.
