Cancel order-possible scam

This is a new one on me!

I bought a fairly low cost item, around £10. After a few days, the seller contacted me to say they don't have the item. They asked me to cancel my order, promising an immediate refund.

I do hate it when sellers try to sell stuff that they don't have.

I cancelled the order as asked-probably my mistake. The seller declined to accept the cancellation, refused to refund and stopped responding to messages.

I raise a complaint with Ebay. The automated system finds in the seller's favour, so I have appealed.

I will raise a further complaint that the item has not arrived when the time is due-which is tomorrow.

The seller has only been on Ebay since July 2025, and has yet to receive feedback of any sort-we all have to start somewhere.

Anybody else come across this one before?

No the seller is being naughty here for their reason for cancelling.

If the item is out of stock as they stated then they get a damaging defect. They however are the only ones that can cancel an order.

If you have paid, then you will have an estimated delivery date, one day after open an Item Nor Received case via ebay as part of the eBay MBG and force the return in this manner.

Read the link below it will help.

Can't see it as a scam,  not for an item for £10.

You say yourself the seller is new,  my money is on the fact,  they don't know how to cancel, not that clear cut for newbies!

Seems you may now have to wait one day after the item's last estimated date for delivery and open a case for item not received.

Thanks for the reply. I will be using the money back guarantee-have had to use it a few times before.

Thanks for replyting. I take your point about the low value of the item but this would work as a scam if selling in this way across multiple accounts.

As for the newbie bit, again I take your point-but why cease all contact via messages if there is no ill intent?

Multiple accounts are allowed,  but would be linked if one receives a ban for too many defects resulting from bad selling / multiple cases for out of stock items, all other acclounts would be banned too.

Seems like I'm championing the seller here, and truly I'm not,  just trying to see what could have gone wrong from a new seller's viewing their account. 🤔

Every day here,  we receive and from very senior long term sellers / buyers,  that their messages are just not sending or being received,  it's glitchy at the best of times, and to be honest when the big box appears to write your message,   you don't write it there, but in a slimline box greyed out box  at the bottom of that large vacant box.

In my humble opinion,  eBay don't make it easy now, to send messages,  even when it is working !  🙄

I don't see what the seller stood to gain from this charade.

Asking you to request a cancellation and then refusing it achieves nothing. You can still use eBay's money back guarantee if the item doesn't arrive.

It sounds more like Mr Bean than Al Capone.

Remember after you have received a refund, that you should leave negative, do not say too much then there is no reason that seller can get it removed.  “Unsatisfactory transaction” says it all and mark down the star ratings.i

Update, if anyone is interested 🙂

I have raised a case (item not received( which will be resolved by Ebay tomorrow.

The seller has yet to respond to Ebay but has issued an Evri tracking number-and not sent it. Playing games until the bitter end, all over £14.
