Buyer requesting return after 30days

We sold a remote control in working order on the 29 Dec. Then yesterday they asked for a refund saying it didn’t work, but wanted to keep the receiver.

i said no. Now they’ve raised a return through eBay saying its faulty and not as described.

Do I have to return?

If 30 days has passed the item's last estimated date for delivery then they can still open a case, but will not be able to escalate and you do not have to refund this buyer. The case will just close, the option may even be there now for you to close the case, have a check.   Just make sure 30 days have passed that date.

Perhaps send the buyer a polite message explaining they are out of time to claim with eBay.

Be aware,  they could still turn to their payment provider to try and get a refund that way.
