How long does eBay take to refund?

Hope this is the right area to post this......

Long story........bought some perfume on eBay, paid for it (part eBay funds, part credit card), seller then told me they had run out and were expecting more stock soon. Said I would wait for delivery. Various emails, delays etc, this was back in March. All very amicable and polite. Have decided it is long enough now, asked for full refund, which seller has said they had sent to me on 23/5/25. Not yet in my eBay account, not on card I paid with. Have contacted seller again, who assures me they have refunded money. Contacted eBay and just got a standard email, telling me to try to resolve with seller. Presumably eBay are hanging onto it.......how long before they pay me back my refund?

What is the status against the order?  Does it say refunded?

Just checked on Ebay.....Item Not Received case open.

Had lots of emails from seller about delay.......

You have 30 days from the latest estimated delivery date showing on the order to open an item not received claim and get a full refund. After 30 days it's just a communications conduit and your seller can't be forced to refund.

Did you pay with a debit or credit card?

If so, once that return closes, issue a not received chargeback via your card provider. You have 120 days from your payment date to do so, so keep an eye on the calendar.

Thanks for the replies. Paid mostly with eBay balance....... only £5 with a card.

Starting to get really angry with seller now......as it appears they are not going to refund me. Is there anyway I can post a bad review, contact eBay and complain? It doesn't seem very fair that they can promise delivery and not come up with the goods.

For a purchase in March, it is too late to pursue an 'item not received' case.

You have to open the case within 30 days of the latest estimated delivery date - the one in the email from Ebay when you pay.

If you opened a case in time but them didn't ask Ebay to step in, the case would automatically close after 21 days.

The seller seems to have been stringing you along so you run out of time.

If the seller had initiated a refund, you would have instantly received an email from Ebay confirming the refund was being processes.  No email, no refund.  Ebay doesn't deliberately hang onto refunds.  It is more likely that the seller never sent one.

You may still be in time to leave negative feedback.

Feedback can only be left for 60 days, do well out of time.

While you could ask your card provider for help, I have no idea how this would work as you only used £5. Money from your ebay account, I have not seen that it is recoverable even if used fully for a purchase, but may be any case for a refund would have to be opened within 30 days.

Thanks for the replies. I do feel it is really unfair, as I have a string of emails from the seller, promising delivery soon etc.....I am out of time to do feedback, but I have opened a 'case' with eBay about it, have to wait until 30 June now.

Is there some way I can let eBay know what they have done? Should I publish the sellers email address here, can I warn others? I really want to make some negative feedback regarding the seller.

You can't name and shame sellers in this forum.

If you find yourself in a similar position in the future, don't assume the seller is honest.

Do open a case promptly.

Once you've opened a case, if the item turns up or you get a refund, you can always close the case.

Okaty, thanks, jckl1957. It is hard to just accept it, the seller seemed so plausible and made lots of promises. 

Is there anyway I can talk with someone at eBay, as it was a large amout, over £75. I have NEVER had any problems before buying stuff with eBay before. Surely eBay should be made aware of dodgy sellers?

Have tried to appeal to eBay.......but can't seem to do it, is it because the case is still open? Have messaged to seller, but they are not replying now! 

I have a long string of messages, saying they had not dispatched etc, delaying, so can provide eBay with this content, but how do I do that please?

Although you were able to open a case late, ebay will not step in and help and there is no point appealing.  The case only serves as a communication mechanism with the seller.

Thanks papso22, I still am really angry with the seller. I waited until the case was  closed (1st July) as eBay said I could not appeal until then, no communication from seller and now I tried to appeal today, now it tells me that as no activity (ie no communication from the seller), I cannot appeal!! What is the point of having an appeal, if I cannot use it?

Is there anyway I can talk/email someone at eBay and let them know that this seller has 'stolen' over £75 from me, and has promised, not only to send the product, but to refund me on several ocassions and has LIED! I have a string of emails from them promising the product initally, then the refund, even saying it had been sent!

I thought eBay might be able to step in and at least help. I have been a buyer and seller on eBay for nearly 20 years and am really saddened, and still angry, to see this happen. There does not seem to be any repercussions for a dishonest seller.

Is there a complaints of eBay procedure?

Contact your card provider and see if you can get anything back that route.

I know that paying via eBay negates a Section 75 claim, but if you used a credit card at eBay checkout you may be covered for the full amount, even though you only paid £5 by card. Ask them.
