My buyer has requested later delivery as they are on holiday, but it looks like I’m late on delivery and eBay may cancel the item

It's very unfair of a buyer to ask for a late delivery , as this will give you a late delivery defect on your account.
Send the buyer a message explaining the above, and you need to, with their permission , cancel the item which will refund them, then relist for the buyer to buy and pay again, when they are home to receive the item.
Cancel citing Buyer Requests to Cancel as this doesn't affect your seller performance.

Thanks for the advice, I’ve messaged them as advised and cancelled their order. Stating that I will hold the item until they return and then relist so they can repurchase if still required.

Good, that is the best way forward, annoying when it happens, but I think sometimes buyers just don't understand the impact delaying dispatch can have on a seller's account, when explained ,they should be understanding !
