Simple delivery postal insurance

What insurance cover have I got with simple delivery on a £400 pound listing when the simple delivery cost on the listing is only £3.46p. The item would normally be mailed standard letter special delivery via Royal Mail at a cost of £9.25p.

I have contacted ebay regarding this and after spending 10 minutes on the phone the eventual reply I got was I would be insured up to £750. But I am not so sure about that as I cannot see Royal Mail paying out £400 in compensation for loss or damage when they have only received £3.46p for standard tracked mail.

I am not so sure about that

Neither am I! There are many unknowns about simple delivery, but until proven otherwise both sellers and buyers can only assume that eBay will honour the terms and conditions they published.

Personally, I think it's only a matter of time before eBay realises that they didn't think simple delivery through properly. Previusly, it was so easy just to enforce refunds by sellers, for example when a buyer kept both the refund and the item, when it arrived. Or falsely claimed that items had arrived damaged, to get a free return.

Now eBay will have to accept these losses, as they made sellers do.  I don't think their accountants will like it! I predict either an increase in the buyer protection fee, or some tightening of the rules!

Ebay CS are correct.

If using simple delivery, you are covered upto £750.

If item does not arrive or is damaged, ebay refund buyer, you keep all money.

What ever answer you care to believe, if you are dealing in Jewellery, Gold, Silver etc. YOU ARE NOT COVERED BY EBAY and need to use Special Delivery.

As you say £3.46 will not protect you.

According to the Simple Delivery Ts and Cs, if the item is damaged in transit or 'lost in the post', Ebay will deal with the buyer's claim.

The postage is paid for by your buyer and the label is provided by Ebay. In the unlikely event of a claim, Ebay refund the buyer and presumably make their own claim against RM.

You keep the buyer's payment.

There was a question over whether gold, precious gems, jewellery etc. would be covered when SD became mandatory for jewellery, but the Community Team have assured sellers that those items will be covered
