Delivery

I live in the UK, and I have noticed lately big problems with delivering items.  I try to pick buyers who use Royal Mail because of the plethora of courier companies.  I am used to Royal mail and know when they deliver. So the week before last I bought two items as they were listed as Royal Mail and now they are being delivered by one of the worst couriers in the UK called Yodel.

EBay sent me a message on Saturday the 31th Aug 2024 which was the day it was supposed to come saying it was out for delivery, but it wasn't on the app by Yodel. So I managed to get in touch with them and they said it would be delivered by Monday the second, but they couldn't say whether it would come on Saturday. So I had to stay in all Saturday, and now it's Monday lunchtime and the app still says they have it, but it's not out for delivery.

I'm finding the problems with delivery, and also the General use of eBay has gone really bad lately, I don't want to use Amazon, but I'm housebound and I need items from online shops.  I live in quite a big town but we don't have a department store so finding simple basic kitchen items can be quite a problem. I don't feel there's any point in me complaining on my own. But is this a common problem in the UK? The thing is, I wouldn't mind paying a bit more for a proper delivery service. But time and time again, I'm stuck here waiting for the doorbell and nothing happens..

eBay never decides which service to use. The seller can simply walk into a post office just like you can. Some sellers lie outright, knowing that most customers don't see what the system looks like to sellers.

Once a reasonable time passed your item's last estimated date for delivery,  and you have not received the item,  then,  if the seller is not being helpful,  go right of the item purchased,  and from More Actions select....  I Have Not Received My Item.

If you are not fully refunded within 3 days,  you must escalate the case on day 4 or within 30 days from opening the case,  and eBay will step in and force the refund.

Do not close the case early for any excuse or promise the seller may give,  and do not forget to escalate.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, I've had to do this many times these days.  A lot of the companies give you notifications whereas with yodel you have to check the app all the time.So what happened yesterday at 8:59 pm (one minute before the 9 pm deadline) they said they missed me and would reschedule the delivery. As if. This has happened before many times as well.

This is why I was throwing open the question.  Am I having bad luck because of my Post Code or are people finding this is happening Nationwide?

Yodel offer more than one service. Yodel 24 and Yodel 48 are only available to businesses while their 3-5 working day option is available to private sellers as well. There's also the option of using Yodel via Packlink, and probably more that I don't know of.

When I get Yodel deliveries, I get an email beforehand, but it may depend on the option.

When checking the tracking on eBay, regardless of courier, clicking on the tracking number will bring you to the Courier's tracking page which may be more accurate than eBay's.

Thank you very much for taking the time to answer. I didn't realise that Yodel offered two services.  The seller advertised that they were going to send Royal mail second-class because I know for my area they are much better. But the seller is saying that eBay will change the courier depending on (I can't remember).  The problem was that eBay was sending me one message and the app was saying something different and when I got in touch with Yodel was only told what was on the app.

Just now  I've checked the app and there is a message saying that Yodel is experiencing difficulties so any orders will be delayed.. (I do hate the way you you have to keep checking the app all the time to see what's going on, most of the other cure couriers send you notifications)

But this simply isn't true, because I had another parcel from another seller and the same thing happened. But this time I got an email notification under two-hour timeslot both parcels went through Gatwick marked 'loaded onto van'.  As you can see, this is just defeating me. So I've asked eBay to step in

know way is this the first time this has happened, but usually, they do this and then come the next day and then I asked the driver about what happened yesterday and of course there was no driver.  Sorry for the Ramble, it's just happening too many times now.

Do you mean that on the listing it said Royal Mail but then messaged you to say that eBay changed it from Yodel, or did the seller message you that they selected Royal Mail and eBay changed it to Yodel?

eBay can't control which service the seller actually purchases, but what can happen is that a seller clicks on one courier and on the listing it shows up as another.

Depending on which service the seller chose, it might be possible to choose a preferred neighbour if you won't be in or change the delivery time. The courier's tracking page will show you whether you have those options. It is terribly frustrating to have to stay home all day for a delivery that doesn't turn up, even if you eventually get the product or your money back.

Thanks very much for the reply. It was advertised as being sent by Royal Mail second-class.

My experience over the years with Yode isl I've not been very good and full of failed attempts to deliver. Yet the next day it gets delivered and the driver is puzzled.

That is why I specifically shop only for Royal Mail or other couriers. But if the seller doesn't say which courier then I won't bother.

But then got a notification saying Yodel were expecting my parcel.

During a conversation with the seller they said they advertise as sending by Royal Mail, but once they process it = eBay decides. I had two attempts for them to deliver. The first attempt it just disappeared. And then they were coming again and told me one minute before the delivery cut off time they couldn't deliver it. This is also daft, I am aware of all the problems, but I don't work so I'm here all the time. Anyway I took it to eBay. They got in touch with them and they've offered to send another one as a replacement so I've said yes but the cut-off day is the 10th. If I don't receive notification from my courier that they have it, or it doesn't get delivered by the 10th I shall ask eBay for a refund.

This is an extraordinary waste of time for both me and the seller and eBay.How things have changed.

Thanks very much indeed. Yes, this is the answer, I have looked at their negative and neutral feedback. It does seem that they've given up on the Royal Mail and now use Yodel.  They have lied but eBay have called them out. It seems they have no idea what is happening and gave me a second dispatch notice, but no tracking whatsoever. So tomorrow is the day that I can tell eBay that there is no delivery and I should get my refund. What an incredible waste of two weeks of time for myself,  EBay and the seller voicemail

I don't know why you're replying to a member who posted in September.

If you want to reschedule a delivery you will have to arrange this yourself on the carriers website.

I try my best to avoid Yodel and Evri but In my experiences, the seller will  often advertise Royal Mail and then after you have purchased,..the seller will change his courier to Evri , Yodel or worse.  There is nothing you can do about it. Ebay allows this practice and the seller knows it.

As told to me by an Ebay rep:  The seller is only responsible for dispatching the item within the specified time. The seller then gives the package to your monkey's uncle to deliver,... with the results you have experienced.  The disturbing part of all this, is you can not leave Neutral or Negative feedback for the seller about their choice of a dubious courier service or how long it actually took for you to receive an item. Any comment about delivery will be removed by Ebay if requested by the seller. There is no way to warn other buyers about what actually happened.

The only solution (which is really not, considering your time,) ...is to request "item not received" the very first day it is late and ask for a refund.
