Hi all

My son has been using my eBay account to sell with my permission however I wasn’t monitoring how much he has actually bought and sold . To keep him out of trouble and at home he kept busy with buying phones getting them repaired and selling them , Because we have gone over the threshold of selling more than 30 items or over £1700 i have got the message saying I need to update my account . My son has mostly bought off eBay and sold on eBay how much tax will we be liable to pay ? I already work and earn just over my personal allowance . Do I need to register for self assessment. Any help will be greatly appreciated .

Yours should have an edit text link to the right of 'Account type' - there's no 'edit' on mine because I don't sell on this account.

Unfortunately there isn’t . Maybe because I’ve just provided my Ni number today and I’m not allowed to

make any changes .

Okay, that's no big deal, there's no urgency to upgrade the account as long as HMRC can be dealt with. You can still use the account.

I am concerned that, whilst your son may use your account with your permission, the tax liabilities will be a problem because it's your account, your NINO attached to it, but his bank account (I still can't work out how he managed to change it to his without raising a red flag with eBay). If you're in a position to run this by an accountant, I would do so, only because money laundering needs to be ruled out. Get professional advice, not somebody on FaceBook who knows it all because they have an uncle who is a retired accountant from Debenhams or something.

Best thing is for him to keep a folder of receipts for phones he's bought to re-sell and get into the habit of running a little business correctly. Hopefully he bought the phones with his debit card so all buying and selling transactions will show on his bank account. He'll have a personal tax allowance so there won't be any to pay but, again, my concern is that the account is yours and I don't know what kind of view HMRC will take of funds being directed to the bank account of somebody who is not the account owner and has a tax allowance, whilst the account owner doesn't. Again, you need a professional take on this.

He managed to add the account which was straightforward. I wish he wasn’t allowed to and then I would never have gave him my bank details . I have read online on the hmrc community forums that have said he needs to register for self assessment.

Yep, that was a bit of a red flag!

He does need to register for self assessment if he's trading as a business, yes.

He’s stopped selling and won’t be allowed to sell  on my account or any other account untill he’s aged 18.

He probably managed to add his own bank account because his surname matched yours.

I think the OP gave their son access to their bank account details, so they matched the ebay account.

Good Afternoon Yn

By reference to "your account" I see that phones ie a Samsung Galaxy and an Iphone were sold over 12 months ago along with numerous other assorted electronic items.

That would make your son under 16 at the time of the sale. How did he manage to open a bank account at this tender age?

You need to consult an accountant or better still make an appointment to go and see someone in your local Tax Office post-haste.

The items sold over a year ago were items that were his own  a lot of old phones and electronic items he collected over the years . He’s turning 17 in June . He’s had a bank account at the age of 11 . I’m in touch with an accountant who I have a meeting with on Tuesday for further advice .

He sounds to me like a very clever lad and I think with mentoring, he will go a long way. I am elderly now but I've been round the block a few times and built several businesses from scratch over the years. If you send me a private message, I'll be happy to try and help you both (no charge).

I agree, must be a solution so the OP son can carry on. OP said they let him do this to keep out of trouble. He should be encouraged really as we all start somewhere
