Simple delivery is awful

I probably DO think that sellers OUGHT to be able to bypass Simple Delivery if they want to; it shouldn't be enforced. However as someone who cannot get to a physical post office more than once a week, or able to print off postage labels, having Simple Delivery & being able to book a Royal Mail collection/bring my label (which has the full address details on) via eBay is brilliant & it generally means I can get off orders next day or the day after (if a buyer buys after 9pm) which is good for me & buyer. Granted I am blessed with a great post lady & generally good service where I live.
I also think Simple Delivery prevents buyers pulling "fast ones" saying they haven't received the item - I have had two buyers try this & tracking had proof & photos - & when I showed the buyers this they went quiet; but anyway eBay had already stepped in & automatically closed the cases against me because of the Simple Delivery tracking & if the postie HAD delivered to the wrong address/lost it then neither myself or the buyer would had lost out.
I will continue to use Simple Delivery - obviously I don't have much choice really, but even if I did, I would still use it. My only concern is making sure I have measured & weighed out the items correctly! I tend to err on the side of caution if the postage charge is the same; kitchen or bathroom scales may not be as accurate as the Post Office ones!
I hope all the lovely sellers out there can persevere & as I said at the beginning, there OUGHT to be a choice as each individual seller knows what works best for them. X

·1 week agoThe last item I sold it has been an absolute joke. Wasn't happy with using a service that would take longer for the buyer to receive and unsigned for. Sent the item via special delivery out of my own pocket and now I can't update the tracking number and have to wait 2 weeks to get paid. Won't be selling or using eBay in general from now on

example buyers / sellers there is nothing on the item page indicating any compensation is available yet you are supposed to trust that simple delivery will provide compensation ?

·1 month agoSimple Delivery has caused myself some confusion as I haven't sold anything for a while so not used to it. At first I thought the buyer hadn't provided his full address on the orders page so I messaged him stating this.
Below the incomplete address I noticed below a note saying 'The full address will appear on your label'. What label? I thought, and I wasn't sure if this meant the address was partly hidden here or if it was a mistake.
OK, why didn't you read the article about simple delivery you may ask, well at the time it was more important to find the address so I could post the item. Eventually I found the full address when I discovered a link to download a label, yes, ebay assumes everyone has easy access to a printer now.
I've now dispatched the item, albeit a day late because of the confusion and now worry about negative feedback. Another example of fixing something that wasn't broken... which always breaks it.

·2 weeks agoYou can download a QR code to your phone and then have it scanned at your drop off location and they print out a sticky label for you(if it supports this service).
The problem is, not all Evri drop offs do Royal Mail. I find Evri is more popular so much easier to find a shop with it. For this reason I deselected Royal Mail in my delivery options yet from time to time a buyer will somehow force a Royal Mail delivery due to eBays Simple Delivery nonsense. Really is a pain.

·1 month agoWhoever is the PM that suggested this needs to give their brains a wash. It's so braindead that it doesn't allow manual interjections from CS. I get it, maybe not L1 agents, but at least if it's escalated to L2 or higher if the situation warrants it. I was told that they had to implement this because of bad experiences with drop-shipping sellers. So the casual seller has to suffer for this?

·1 month agoIt's fine for pure and simple standard items but it falls apart when you need to amend the delivery or send abnormal packets. Its downfall is its lack of flexibility. Pre Simlle Delivery you could amend postage and couriers very simply. Now you cant .. you press GET POSTAGE LABEL and you're stuck with what your given.

·1 month agoPersonally, I find the Simple Delivery system useless and ugly. But then now Ebay Inc are in trouble, it seems clutching at straws and trying to market their way out of trouble, shout load and fail to deliver (pun intended) is typical of gingermen lead Inc.'s.
The SD system has now allowed other carriers to appear but still the system fails if you have some unique incident. Try combining to packages of greatly varying weights, or uprating a delivery service to help out a buyers particular needs,
Other than basic small packets, I now tend to arrange my own delivery services direct (bit of a fag compared to the old system but easier than SD) and cheaper to.

·2 months agoJust noticed trying to send a medium parcel with a chisel in has two options via eBay standard : £21 and express at £26 via UPS . Yes that's £17 more than the old evri postage. Hmmmmmmm... eBay please sort this out it's broken!

·2 months agoIt'll be deeming the chisel as a bladed article which is likely true if it does indeed have a sharp edge.
Your only realistic option is to switch to a Business Seller account to set your own postage (of which you could select Royal Mail with a Click and Drop business account). Given you restore tools to sell them - its certainly an arguable case you should be a business seller anyway.

·2 months agoThe best category for an item I want to list is one that only has Simple Delivery, which would cost £2.72. In a different category, which is OK but not quite as good, I can post it with Custom delivery for 91p.
So it's a dilemma as to whether it will stand more chance of selling in the best category at a higher price to take account of the high postage cost, or in a less good category at a lower price due to the cheaper postage cost.
Heaven forfend that ebay could give everything the best chance of selling by making all categories available with Custom postage if the item is under £20 ☹️

·2 months agoyep - a few posts on this now. Little ebay can do given its royal mail removing the service for private sellers.
This is essentially aiming to limit the sale of bladed articles to registered businesses, unless you accept the use of the more expensive UPS service (unsure if other age verification services exist outside of ebays postage options). I also accept that what ebay deems a bladed article is, heavy handed.

And at the moment I think in a nightmarish way the answer is that every category is slightly different so you need to change categories until you find one with age verification as an option and select postage only?! ·3 months agoIt's a complete joke , as a buyer , the last 2 items Ive purchased have all taken 10 to 14 days to reach me . The seller has posted out the same day with tracking showing parcel shop received the item.
I've another on its way that's now on day 8 since purchase. Evri seem to just let it sit at the sorting office until they can be arsed to do their job .
I should have used Amazon really where the delivery service is much better and yes , a charge for £2.99 for next day delivery if you've not got prime but much less headache . Service is disgusting

·3 months agoUpdate: managed to get it to list but I had to check multiple categories to find one linked to the item but with simple delivery unavailable for this item and take collect in person off. Basically it's an absolute mess of a Maze but I think there is ways through for allowed items only of course they just need to really sort it out argh!
Ps I think Leathermen is on the banned list sorry. 😕

I'm hoping they can resolve this for the millionth time soon 😞 . Time to investigate I guess...

·3 months agoSo I was happily selling stuff then today tried to make two adverts for woodworking chisels and add age verification postage and... No option for age verification postage only simple delivery. So I put them up hoping that it was included in simple delivery now and they got taken down then tried to get info on why I can't add age verified postage and no answer!? I know it's eBay and this sort of ridiculous logic seems to be never ending but what am I missing here?

·3 months agoYet more reasoning why I don't use Evri when sending out parcels, and why I don't use Simple delivery! It's not simple when everything goes wrong!!
The only exception would be if it would fit through a letterbox, then I'd use Evri...except Evri Postable is still more expensive than InPost Small via Yodel Direct...and I can just drop the item off at a locker, and have up to 8cm vs up to 3cm via Evri Postable...
So it just doesn't work out properly to use Evri, and it makes even less sense to use Simple Delivery when, despite what eBay say, your money may be at risk...!

·3 months agoeBay's simple delivery will be costing them for their own stupidity,I've never had a problem using Evri and always used signed for service, but eBay's discounted to them service will be costing, my latest parcel for goods sold for £30 , posted off using qr label system couldn't have gone better and delivery next day brilliant ! But I always thought attempts were 3 times by evri perhaps their discounted service doesn't do so . The buyer was not home for several hours and parcel that was left on front door step missing photo of delivery supplied, buyer complaint received parcel missing and eBay said as I had used simple delivery they informed me they would take care of everything and my money for goods in account safe , buyer then appealed and of course auto buyer protection kicks in and refunds him and changes to claim back from seller me, I then have to appeal and as I used simple delivery it's not my fault of course and again my sale money is safe . I assume Ebay lose here as Evri have supplied photo proof of delivery !

·3 months agoRoyal Mail "Simple Delivery" (if you choose to turn off Evri) just uses standard Tracked 48 (or Tracked 24 for express), no signature option available!! At least with eBay's built in services before Simple Delivery, you could choose to add a signature (at your expense).

All they needed to do was upgrade to Business Seller. Their choice not to.

·3 months agoI am a private seller and do not use Simple Delivery on the vast majority of items sent. It takes a little more effort at the listing stage but is easily doable. Point in hand.

·3 months agoI've sold on eBay for the last 20 years...mainly postcards and books which I've collected in relation to either work or hobbies...now for books at least the only option seems to be Simple Delivery which on most occasions will be more expensive than me sending direct with Royal Mail .. and it's more complicated ..so the books go to charity shops if I can't list as a custom postage.

Whilst Simple Delivery is not without its faults, if that book was ' lost in the post' , not delivered, or was badly damaged in transit , under Simple Delivery rules, eBay would fully refund the buyer, and you would get to keep the payout for that item.
That part of SD can't be bad ? 🤔

·3 months agoother than my property, photo proof of not to my house, and both Evri and
eBay have refused to refund me. Evri told me to go find it and if I couldnt
to contact seller but because of eBay Simple Delivery it is eBay who, as
you say, are responsible. eBay refused my refund saying parcel had been
shown as delivered by Evri. I challenged that and they again refused and
closed my claim. I eventually managed get to speak to an eBay agent who
claimed to be synthetic to my case and said he couldn't change the
judgement but would refer my request further up the chain of command. As I
expected a week later I have heard no more. The lost item luckily had a
value of JUST £20 which I have lost but it could just as easily have been
£200. I have Googled and find that claims for delivery loss on eBay have
gone up significantly since they brought in Simple Delivery and it must be
costing them a fortune which is why I assume they are now starting to
refuse to refund some claims. This of course affects honest sellers and
buyers like me. How long it will be before they realise they can no longer
stand the cost and ditch Simple Delivery who knows

·3 months agoTrouble there was that tracking had shown delivery, hence your claim from eBay is not honoured.
I have never contacted Evri, but understand it's not the easiest of processes, but if you have photo evidence of the item being shown at a different property, you may need to try Evri again, as it is they who made the error here.

·3 months agoIt appears ebay don't take any notice of photos (because how would they know it was not your garden).
They simply look at hte GPS tracking of where the delivery scan took place. Provided its to your locality - that is the evidence.
if you aren't getting anywhere with ebay - do a chargeback with your payment provider.

problem is that Evri are failing to deliver correctly in time, regularity
and correctness in my area PL14 due to no couriers wishing to deliver in
country location where to make an honest living they are sometimes still
delivering at 9pm. During the last 12 months we have had numerous temps and
couriers who last less than a week. In haste to get rid of their parcels if
they struggle to find the exact location they will dump parcel anywhere
showing on Googe Maps as close by the intended location.
Google 'Evri are a joke in PL14 area'.
eBay should accept responsibility for adopting the worst courier company on
the planet as one of just two options originally (along with RM who I use
all the time) on their STUPID SIMPLE DELIVERY SYSTEM.

·3 months agoThat is true - that is something that does happen on occasion.
Wouldn't necessarily affect the seller bar the fact you might leave a negative - but they could get that removed.
tressygirl is correct - if the item was lost in post or not delivered then ebay should refund.
Where it falls down is on the instances like yours where a delivery is recorded but you can't find it - for whatever reason that might be - stolen parcel if left on doorstep. ebay will simply take the fact a delivery was recorded as proof, no matter what you say.
Its not great at all of course - these instances do happen - but if you use amazon - it goes completely the opposite way - amazon will believe the customer if they claim its not been delivered - seller will lose out.

·3 months agoUnder these circumstances, if eBay doesn't give you your money back (there's no way of resolving it with Evri when eBay is the customer) and an INR case fails, it may be beneficial to contact your payment provider and raise a dispute that way.
I always pay with PayPal, and that way, I (as a buyer) get 3 ways to get this sort of things resolved:
1. Directly via eBay through INR or INAD if not described
2. If (1) doesn't work, open a PayPal claim - this is external to eBay so eBay won't have a say on what happens
3. If (2) is also unsuccessful, open a charge back claim with your bank against PayPal, again external to any of the above.
I had an issue once where Parcel2Go overcharged me, so I went to PayPal. They sided with Parcel2Go, so I then opened a case with my bank and they gave me my refund. Presumably the bank swallowed the cost, because PayPal don't like charge backs!
Anyway, at least there are the above methods of recourse should you need them...

This means you will retain your sales proceeds in relation to the item sent using the Simple Delivery label. The item will be in transit from the point it has been scanned into the carrier’s network until it has been marked as delivered by the carrier. For the avoidance of doubt, your item will not be covered for loss or damage during transit if you have acted fraudulently.

Royal Mail Signed For has been £20 for quite some time now. However, Royal Mail 1st/2nd Signed For (and 1st/2nd Standard) are bad services anyway...:
1) They do not offer full end to end tracking and Standard won't even say delivered if the postie is lazy enough to not scan the barcode at delivery
2) Standard and Signed For are more expensive than their Tracked and Tracked With Signature counterparts!!
Which means there is ZERO reason to go with Signed For 2nd Class when Tracked 48 with Signature exists. Etc etc.
Also... Simple Delivery uses Tracked 48 or Tracked 24, the latter for express services. There is NO OPTION for a signature on delivery. And of course the difference between £75 and up to £750 (so up to £675) is swallowed by eBay if there are any problems (though see above where people have provided proof of delivery, the buyer complains and then eBay tries to take the sellers' money regardless! Even though the seller should be covered under Simple Delivery rules anyway!!!).
So....
*and yes there are options to get Custom Postage even as a private seller, if you know what you're doing.

·3 months agoJust made my first ever ebay sale, and probably my last. Simple delivery is anything but. Ebay under charged the postage and put my wrong return address on the label. (OK the latter was sort of my fault for not realising I had to add my new address manually in about 4 places. Naively I thought that changing it on my account would change it everywhere.) So I didn't use the Simple Delivery label but posted it tracked myself. But will ebay let me tell them or enter the new tracking number? Will they heck. So not sure if I'll ever get paid, although at least I've honoured the buyer. Looks like it might be bye bye payment and bye bye ebay!

tracking details. I did however eventually get paid out by eBay.

·3 months agoCompletely agree, and it’s just as bad from the buyer’s side.
Simple Delivery completely blocks direct messaging between buyer and seller. If there’s any issue with the order, the buyer has no way of contacting the seller at all — the only option is to open a dispute once the eligibility period kicks in.
On top of that, eBay customer support told me they won’t contact the seller on the buyer’s behalf — the seller has to call them. So as a buyer you’re essentially stuck with no communication channel and no support.
It’s a terrible experience for everyone involved. eBay really need to rethink this.

·3 months agoI stopped selling April last year when it was clear that you could not avoid SD. I come back and check the boards now and then just to see how things are but the problems are still the same and for me, I know I made the right decision.
Pity as I'm being forced to move out of the family home & need to downsize drastically but I can't cope with the mental cartwheels one has to go through if things go slightly awry. I haven't the time or the mental energy to deal with all that.

not just simple delivery but BPF, business sellers on private accounts etc.
they’d be slightly more concerned if users were declining (but again if are basing that on comments here or on Reddit - still a minority)
all they will care about is if revenues are rising.

·3 months agoTo be fair to ebay SD is better than it was when I posted " SD is utter tosh" on the first page of this thread around a year ago.
Whether it's the result of them reading the forum or not who knows.
It really was very awful on launch and now it's just kinda bad.
Since SD tipped me into signing up for the V place I'm finding around half my purchases are happening there just because it's often more compelling as a buyer. I'm still tending to sell unwanted stuff on ebay as I've found people here seem willing to pay higher prices. But it depends on the item as V are stronger and more active in some categories. Ebay have lost their market dominance in the UK and that's probably a good thing for consumers.

I've been selling on ebay for 24 years and to be forced into choosing a delivery system I don't like or want means goodbye ebay.

·3 months agoAt least there's other sites like Vntd where the similar shipping system works much better. AlthoughThey're not perfect because people send silly low offers like £1:80 for a £3 item just because the postage for it is £5:60 . This is why I try to sell larger items on F/book

·4 months agoThey've also made it super annoying to combine postage as well. It's not very clear at all. And you can't add it to orders already placed. Funny they never mentioned anything like that on Simple Delivery setup. Before it was actually so simple...you get 2 orders for the same address you can just refund them delivery fee.
Now Simple Delivery INSIST you buy postage labels from the sale payment for each item. How is that simple??? Simply sh*t.

·4 months agoWith Simple Delivery it is eBay that is charging for the postage not the Seller, so that won't work. Combined postage is only really possible at the moment if the buyer places the items in their basket before paying.

·4 months agoitems in their basket is that too many people don't know, can't or won't
use the basket facility! If you had to use the basket as the only method to
checkout it would make a lot more sense, but ebay won't do that because
they get more profit without using it!

·4 months agoYes, I agree that the basket facility needs to be made clearer to buyers or maybe eBay should add an option to 'Create a bundle' as on a certain other site that thay have been keen to copy.
