Above headline taken from Ebay's current promo
So why do buyers have to pay a Buyer Protection Fee Ebay ?

Because eBay want to earn more money. Greed.

The free to sell was to get people back from the competition and new people in, then they copy the competition and charge a buyers fee. The seller has money kept back which makes interest, then take over the postage and make more money from that. Very well thought out except that if people don't buy it all falls apart, the buyers leave, the sellers leave, and the sellers buying from business have gone too

Yes, but the fee free selling thing was totally unnecessary. I'd been selling bits for years before that. We used to get offers, % off or max £1 off memory. I was totally happy with that and normal fees too. I've got no problem with them earning something from this or me.
But I won't let them order or fleece me because they think I'm just one more meek little sheep. At that point they can *bleep* off.
