As above..
I'm selling some DJ turntables they are to large to ship. My advert clearly states cash on colllection only. Yesterday I get a buyer who puts in an offer, I declined but in the comments I stated that I accept his offer cash on collection. He then puts in another offer, I respond again stating I accept your previous, cash on collection please inbox me. He then proceeds to pays full price via eBay..
I then ask him when he'd like to collect and explain I will only accept cash on collection. He replies "let's leave it then" . So I've now lost all my watchers. And selling fee discount.
I messaged again to ask why, and he states that he wants buyer protection.. I reply stating that he is welcome to inspect and even test the items for as long as he requires before paying.
How do I stop people doing this? Is there a way to de select managed payments? And why exactly do eBay allow buyer protection on collection items? The buyers will be checking them before leaving, so how can they be not as described? 🙃
I'm reading that he could have driven down from Oxford, taken them, put in not as described and I'd be liable to arrange a return and refund. That's crazy. He could have a damaged item at home and just be wanting to get a mint replacement.
Where is the protection for the seller here? Rant over..

you call evading eBay fees a "genius idea"?
Excellent way to lose your account.

"It's not necessary to have buyer protection for collection."
Unfortunately it is at times necessary.

Didn't think of that evading fees is not my reason, avoiding bs terms is.. But if it's cash on collection there won't be fees anyway? Because it will be sold as seen outside of eBay? With eBay only used as a place to list the item?
eBay would get the fee though. They would get 10 percent of 99p 😜
It's absolutely not necessary for someone viewing and testing an item to have buyer protection. It's absolutely necessary for delivery items though. 👍

But isn't that what cash on collection is? It's not through eBay managed payments. It's through eBay but cash?

If you are listing on eBay then the sale has to be completed on eBay even if payment is to be made in cash. eBay will still charge fees which will be taken from your linked bank account.

Ebay expects their fees to be based on what the buyer pays, joking or not, you are suggesting something that would be fee evasion.

Fee evasion was certainly not something that crossed my mind. I'm an honest person, so I guess that's why.

Ok, please forgive me, I didn't know that. So how does it work? Yesterday the buyer paid straight away with managed payments? Does the buyer have to select cash at the checkout I assume?
I was assuming you just message one and another and come to an agreement but I am a newbie have never sold collection only. 😊

If it's the case that the buyer can select cash and eBay can take the fee from my account. Would that also mean that eBay can use my account to refund an unscrupulously buyer even if they pay via cash?

Yes, the buyer would have to select cash payment at checkout.
If the buyer pays cash then they are not protected under eBay's Money Back Guarantee.

Cheers clears things up for me. So why on earth does buyer protection still apply via managed payments? It's definitely something eBay should update. I see no end of people posting on here with buyers trying their luck.
A few days ago there was a guy who sold a bed, he said the buyer checked it over only to arrive home complaining a bracket was missing.
This info also cements my assumption that the buyer who paid yesterday wanted to do a dirty on me. Who pays £100 over, just for managed payments? I had no idea he could have just selected cash at check out. Wow.

Your buyer had to pay the full price to get the item because you rejected the lower offers he made. He could have still paid cash.
If a buyer pays using an online payment method then they are protected by their payment provider regardless of the protection offered by eBay.

On this occasion he paid via eBay managed payments , it was processing. I asked why and he stated that he wanted buyer protection.
He definitely did not need it, they are mint condition turntables 4 months old that he would be testing for as long as he liked. The only reason he'd need it was to scam me.

So basically he paid £100 over the price I agreed on in principle to, without knowing he could select cash at check out. Had I have known that I'd have simply accepted his first offer stating cash only please. But I did not know that was how it worked.

Anyway what you've all said confirms in my mind that he was a scammer. Who pays 100 over. I told him to inbox me, if was experience he could have told me he can select cash at check out, why didn't he? He wanted to scam..
They do look for newbie sellers. So I guess I was a soft target.

I'm unsubscribing now. Have said my piece, the system is completely flawed. Enough said 👍
