Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I’m a member for 14 years - I have today complained fiercely to EBay with regards to 4% + 75p charge on each item purchased as we all know this is a Back Door way of recovering the Seller Fees which were scrapped recently - Buyers already have adequate protection - as to payment 2 days after delivery - we’re at the mercy of Royal Mail to scan all  items when collected (not guaranteed) 😡

Fellow  members I urge you to let your disproval known - SHAME ON YOU Ebay😡😡

Don't get me wrong,  this, coupled with Simple Delivery, I think is a disaster in the making (especially the latter).

if they do mandatory SD it would be so backwards I have no idea why buyers should need to select the carrier causing sellers to unnecessarily drive between loads of drop-off points each day. If anything it might even slow down dispatch times as some sellers might take the view that a nearby dropoff point they didn't want to use is so inconvenient they will go there in a few days time etc regardless of if it delays payment.

@akemp1 just to be clear, from what I'm seeing, buyers don't actually select the carrier with Simple Delivery - they are only presented with the option for Standard or Express Tracked Delivery.

As a matter of interest, I just looked at a few items which were obviously Simple Delivery. Big decision, do I spend an extra £1.01 for Express?!

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

The standard and the express have the exact same delivery times so buyers will always choose the cheaper one.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I suspect the 4% fee will be after the 75p so as to charge 4% on the 75p like when they charged a total percentage fee including post. I have been selling for years with ebay 100% feedback And as a private seller i have just removed all sales as the new post is a joke, i live in the sticks and it seems simple post is going to create all sort of problems like if i sold 4 items they could all be different carriers, Look i am seventy now and i did not sign up for this so i guess it is time to move on . shame really as it was a nice way to move things we no longer needed and of course we bought stuff which we will no longer do. Ebay will regret these changes, enough said.

It won't be. It's 4% of item price + 75%

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I don’t have a printer, so worried about labels?

I tried using Evri 2 years ago…delayed deliveries, damaged/squashed boxes, 2 parcels lost and never found. Never used again.
I have sent second class RM over 20 years with few issues.

The postman brings the labels and collects now as I can’t drive.

We don’t have any drop off places that I can get to.

Too old now to be worrying about all this.
I had hoped to clear mine and relatives vast book collections but have already packed up 5 boxes for a charity who say they’re happy to collect.

Shame, as it supplements pension and buyers like their purchases.

I certainly won’t be buying anything from eBay anymore and my relatives have closed their accounts already.  (Feel guilty, as I encouraged them to start buying and selling as a way to clear their lifetimes collections) Far too much anxiety!

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Ok thanks for that but as a private seller it is a kick in the teeth, i shall just see how this all pans out as there are too many variables with posting, I have feedbacks when apparently it is still out for delivery, not necessarily Ebays fault but it raises  questions.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Thank you and charities were our first call; we did donate furniture with safely labels and smaller items of furniture/paintings etc. There were a large number of things that they wouldn't accept eg conservatory furniture, perfectly good beds where my Mum had removed the fire safety labels (even though we knew they met safety requirements) very large cabinets etc. They are understandably fussy as if they can't sell an item within a short time, it's not worth them taking it. We didn't have transport for big furniture, so ebay was great - sold two new (un-used beds) which were in the spare bedroom for £5 each within 24 hours of listing. Buyer was absolutely thrilled and we didn't have to pay for council removal (which would have been £120 as they charge £30/item; mattress removal is a separate cost to the bed base!)

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Maybe not "profit" in the sense of selling for more than you originally paid, but definitely in the sense of "are you getting a reasonable amount for your time and effort"  (and that decision varies from person to person). It's not really relevant what you bought an item for - when you sell (because you no longer want it) at £2 are you happy in terms of the time it's taken you to list, pack and post? If so, great.  I'm reaching a point where it's just too much effort for that much money and I'd rather use my time elsewhere.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

But you haven't 'lost over £400'. You've had 5 years use from it so it's second-hand (and presumably de-valued over time ie not an antique).

I bought a cabinet for my kitchen for over £300. I changed the design of my kitchen so It didn't fit and I'm really p****d off as I can't return it, so I am now selling at auction for £15. To me, that's not selling at a loss (as I've already stupidly 'lost' the money) - it's enabling me to get rid of something I no longer want for a small amount of money. I'll have £15 in my pocket (hopefully) next week, that I don't have today!

My only alternative is to take it to the tip.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I have lost £400 according the poster that claims private sellers have to sell for a margin and if we don't we are wasting our time, they claimed we all sell for a profit privately when it isn't the case.

I know I have had 5 years use out of it and was never going to get back what I paid but according to them it isn't worth my time to take pics and list because its at a loss and should either throw it away or give to charity, see my posts numbered 685 and my response to them.

I also have bought things in error and took huge losses and just happy to get what I can back.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Well it's entirely up to you how you think about (or if you choose not to think about it at all). There are no rules for profit margins when selling on ebay regardless of whether you are a private or business seller; my point was simply whether it was worthwhile to you or not and clearly your £200 sale was (I've never sold anything for that much on ebay).

For me selling something I no longer want for money rather than throwing it away is a 'profit'. According to the dictionary a profit is a financial gain; you don't have to sell for more than you buy to make a financial gain, but if you don't like the word 'profit' that's fine with me (and should be for any other poster here).

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

With Simple Deliovery, will overseas buyers of my items have to pay extortionate International Signed For of around £7-8 per purchase ?   If so, bang go the overseas buyers.

Standard = Evri

Simple as that.

@twin--turbo  Unfortunately, with Simple Delivery, it is not simple as that.

There are reasons they have gone with generic labels of Standard and Express - mostly because eBay has pitched Simple Delivery to investors as a revenue generating initiative and in order to make that work, they need to have the "freedom" to select the most cost optimized (for them) options for any given shipment.

You can see the same logic in play with sneakers that are part of the authentication program where both in the UK and US, eBay has mandated managed shipping services/costs as part of that program.

2025-01-18_11-15-40.jpg

The buyer is just shown a generic offering of "eBay Delivery" which allows eBay to choose which carrier is ultimately used for the prepaid label provided to the seller and for shipping the sneakers to the buyer after authentication.

2025-01-18_11-07-48.jpg

It's highly unlikely eBay will use the exact same carrier/service every time for Standard and Express in Simple Delivery for the same reason they don't always use the same carrier/service for eBay Delivery of authenticated sneakers - their ability to maximize revenue from both programs depends almost entirely on them being able to make that choice on the fly based on a variety of factors.
