Another corrupt company has now shown me that they have joined the growing scam culture that is unfortunately being accepted in our country. It all comes down to the simple things that we are tought to avoid by our elders are now acceptable in today's society. I'm not going to let my children learn to accept this way of life and I hope that the bosses and regulators of eBay and similar companies don't teach their own children to be like them. We're only here for a short time but what we do in life echo's an eternity so please don't entertain these scammers and delete your eBay account!

I hate to be that guy but ebay has been bad for a long long time. I remember when it first started and speaking to the guy who made it saying how this is what he didnt want. I mean he did sell out but who wouldnt. Theyve been awful for years. The issue is, when regulators ignore them they get cheekier. Remember when they forced u to pay with their own company paypal? now theyre forcing private sellers to use the shipping they say and forcing everyone to pay them per click to even appear anywhere noticeable on the search. My impressions (IMPRESSIONS) of items have gone from 20,000 a week on some items to 200. They have tinkered the algorithm and i prob will need to bail out. They will make u PAY if u want to sell now. The CEO has lost it. Same as the EVRI ceo with his robot dog. The biggest headache is the internet folded into nothing in the end. It's amazon or ebay....everything else doesn't stand a chance. I sometimes miss 1997-1998. Yahoo auctions, goricardo, excite auctions, qxl, gumtree etc. Most are gone now or dont get enough traffic to even be worth bothering with.

Depending on what you sell there is another big player app - starts with a V

I believe it’s expanding its categories. Ive never used it although I have created an account. I need time to read through how it works and set up payment. Im slow with not a lot of ‘free’ time due to getting to grips with ebays changes and well, living my life really.

There are now more categories on there - not just clothes anymore. Not sure if the requirement is still they are preloved though.
That being said - in terms of setup - same as ebay now is really for private sellers.
- There's a BPF (though its clearer)
- There's simple delivery (though with more options)
- There's a hold on payments until delivery is confirmed by the customer

My main thing for any platform is the ability to use web rather than an app. I know I can use web format as that is how I made an account and that they have their own payment system and simple delivery (Ive already fiddled about with that) along with BPF. I want to explore their categories as I have soooo much personal stuff I want rid of (had to take on a storage unit due to a cluster of family deaths - parents and grandparents- in a relatively short time period and it goes through me to pay £200 a month for storage) so need to work out which platforms are best for ease of offloading. We have given a chunk away to charity but the rest we want to sell if we can.

I've bought on V but not tried selling until 5 days ago, when I thought I'd experiment. I listed a couple of items that I'd already had sitting on my private account on eBay for a week (I was rather surprised because in the past they'd sell same day).
Both items sold within 24hrs, I got paid and had to wait for delivery to show as received and the buyer has 2 days to report an issue, then your payment is released and you can transfer it to your bank account. No problems there. If the buyer clicks on a button that they accept the item then payment is also released. So, pretty quick process.
I think they initially boost new sellers then, when their sales start trailing off, expect them to pay to boost their listings, but if you're selling brand items then buyers will simply search for that brand so will find your listings.
Pleasantly surprised, tbh.

I've ended everything here and as the current ruling stands won't be coming back after 23 years here. I won't be buying either! I have tried several other sites included vinted - only listed 6 items and made no effort - sold 1, but now I'm starting to list. Especially after I did some searches yesterday and saw just how many new areas are being covered there! Vinted does not appear to be just clothes any longer - I saw lots of Diecast - and some good ones, which went while I was looking at them, so I put 2 on and one was being watched straight away, so there is life after Obey! Just as I predicted a couple of months ago - when they saw how Obey were getting rid of private sellers I knew they would pick them up. Yes the format is similar to what Obey have copied, BUT you don't have to jump through as many hoops and the money is there - in my case to spend, just as it was here but Obey did not value my input - so tough on all the business sellers who also got a slice of my sales revenue.
You screwed it Obey - and as for the give us your NI number or else - why is no one else asking for it???

Vinted will ask for it when you've sold 30 items and/or your sales reach £1740.

Do you know that to be true, or is it supposition?
What about ebid ? Delcampe ? Facebook - don't think so, gum tree even if it is an obey co?
But you don't disagree with my other comments...

They absolutely will - they have a help page almost identical to ebays outlining that requirement.
No idea on the others - but if they aren't - that just means they aren't abiding to UK law - not that ebay are wrong for requesting it.
gumtree is no longer an ebay company - they sold it five years ago.

Well I've been told (obviously need to confirm) that after 30 sales or £1740 Vinted ask for proof of ID - which does not inc NI number. I also am of the understanding that there are conflicting statements about revealing your NI number on 'Government' websites, one dept saying its Ok others saying its not?
As for abiding by Government law - I could give a list as long as my arm of laws that are broken daily by companies in this country and there appears to be little if any comeback and no one prepared to do anything about it...
..kick off with the PO scandal which is just one high profile,
...bottom of the scale practically every supermarket that 'accidentally' mislabel prices and charge a different amount when you get to checkout. The list is endless and grows by the day!
I did not realise gum tree were no longer obey - thats at least a sort of positive - LOL

1 - Just search 'Vinted How to Complete Your HMRC Form'
2 - Here is where it states it is OK to reveal your NI number - see Information you MUST Give
3 - That is whataboutery and doesn't mean anything in terms of giving your NI to ebay to pass onto HMRC

This is just one of many places where Vinted members confirm that they are being asked for their NI number.

I know it to be true. A little research on your part will also show that it's the same across the other selling platforms such as Vinted and Etsy.
FaceBook is not yet included, nor is Gumtree.

I don't think you take payments on facebook or gumtree though - hence why they can't be included (I assume thats the reason anyway)

Thank you. Access via web page rather than phone is important for me, so I'm happy to hear that. And although I don't like the sound of whatever they call their version of Simple Delivery, does it let me use RM at normal cost, with collection by my postie for an extra 30p. If not, that's a deal breaker for me.
30-05-2025 2:40 PM
You can access via the web.
In terms of delivery - I've just taken a look and the only one as standard they offer as collection from your address is Yodel Door to Door. You also need a printer.
You can select Royal Mail for drop off (i've no idea if you can then go to the Royal Mail website to request a collection) - but it works the same as Simple Delivery - the customer pays Vinted for the postage and then Vinted supply you a label.
30-05-2025 9:49 PM
Id have to double check, Im pretty sure if you have a label and a number, you can arrange RM collection. Ive done it for returns when Ive had return labels given to me.

I recently shifted to V due to ebay not listening over SD. Haven't sold anything yet, but key things for me:
1. I can choose my courier/s from a fairly big list.
2. I can post within 5 working days rather than ebay's 3. Much more flexible for private sellers who have a full-time job and family responsibilities.
They also have a holiday mode which is a really helpful feature. Pauses all your listings until you return.
Previously, when using ebay I had to either delist everything (and lose favourites) or change the turnaround time to a period longer than my holiday and drop any buyers a quick message.
ebay's gonna lose to V in the UK. They could have won, if they'd listened.
