Buyer wins auction then asks to cancel as he has found it cheaper. Auctions used to be binding!

I always thought the whole point of an auction was it was binding unless the goods were found to be faulty. I recently sold an item that had multiple bids just below the eventual winning price. EBay then contacted me to ask if I wanted to re-list as the buyer had found a cheaper version.  EBay used to contact the second bidder to see if they wanted it, but this seems to have stopped now, with them suggesting you re-list. In this case I re-listed only to have zero bids or interest, probably because other buyers are put off by the fact the auction fell through and incorrectly assume there is an issue with the item. So after 3 days and no interest today I pulled the item and will look to list it on a competitor’s site. EBay has become ridiculous. If you don’t want to pay a number don’t bid. Bidders who get buyer’s remorse should be banned from further auctions.

It is bonkers, if buyers pull out the seller should be able to report them for non-payment and give them a strike against their account. The strike stays there for a year, and sellers can block bidders with two or more strikes. They shouldn't be allowed to simply change their mind after winning.

You should still be able to issue a Second Chance Offer to the underbidder though, eBay never used to do that, it's always been the sellers choice.

Thanks for coming back. Not sure how I would go about making a second chance offer. EBay didn’t give me the option to. They just suggested I re-list it. Is very annoying as I was happy with the sale price and the underbidders offers.

I guess if ebay forced the buyer to complete on something they didn't want they might just do a false INAD return making the seller write-off the cost of postage in both directions and wasting a week or two of postage time so it's probably better to allow them to back out of a bid even if it doesn't seem right.

Maybe you are better thinking of it as beneficial that they backed out before you had posted it.

Remember to blacklist them if they wasted your time and made you unhappy.

Well I have cancelled the auction now anyway. I am not prepared to sell the item for a number that is likely to be significantly lower due to the fact other bidders think something is wrong with the item.
Will look to sell on a competitor.

Have you considered just relisting as a buy it now at what you think it's worth or what the winning bidder was willing to pay (or maybe the bidder before that who probably would have actually paid) which you seemed to be happy with?

Things may have changed with all the recent eBay stuff but I have never heard of eBay being involved and dealing with it!  My understanding is that the buyer contacts the seller [possibly through eBay messaging but not "from" eBay] and "asks" to withdraw.  You can allow that if you wish or better [in my view] simply ignore them and after 4 days open an "non payer" case which will give them a defect and no one can leave feedback.

The disadvantage of this system is that the buyer then pays for it, you despatch it and he might then simply open a "Not as described case" [perhaps damaging the item too] you then have to provide and pay for a label.  It really does not matter too much what the facts of the case are as eBay tends always to find for the buyer.  It's pretty automatic ...

As to the second chance offer again eBay does not offer it; you do!  I believe the procedure is that you go to the bidding and click on the underbid which has a link to "send a second chance offer".    This will normally be at one increment less than the auction sale price

Thanks for sending that, but I don’t get a chance to press more actions. So can’t offer a second chance. I simply am not given the option.

Thanks for the help. Really wish I knew this before. We live and learn.

I received this from EBay. Although it initially says I need to respond to the buyer, it then goes on to say unless I have posted it I need do nothing but relist. It felt that was the only option I had.
