Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

I'm a private seller. Items I sell are between £2.90 - £10. Is It just me or will ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb make it near impossible to sell competitively. A few months ago Ebay got rid of Sellers' fees for private sellers, which was a welcome move. But this new change and getting rid of multi-buy discount for private sellers will make it worse than it was with the original fees.

I had never heard the phrase Swedish death cleaning before but it is exactly what I am doing.  My kids don't want my collections or ornaments etc so I am getting rid of it all. My own parents kept everything.

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

So if ebay are responsible for loss when using simple delivery how can they justify not paying the seller until delivery?

And what are they going to do on all the occasions when Royal Mail fails and the parcel stays in transit forever, despite the buyer receiving it?

And how will combining postage work?  There is no way everyone could have postage rules that would take account of all the possible combinations of sizes, weights and value that could happen in a multiple purchase.

If we are forced to go through packlink for Evri we can all look forward to the overweight packages scam.

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

I've begun doing this. I put MY price in the title and in the description. And added a sentence about the fact that buyers will pay an extra tax to ebay if buying the item from 4th February 😆

'......My own parents kept everything.'

My husband's parents kept everything, and my husband is still keeping it. And eveything from a late cousin. Who, in his turn, had kept everything from *his* mother!

So much stuff to dispose of somehow, that really shouldn't just be thrown away ..... 🙄

I read about 'Swedish Death Cleaning' in a paper a year or 2 ago, and it sums up what really needs to be done in a few short words 😁

'So if ebay are responsible for loss when using simple delivery how can they justify not paying the seller until delivery'

Well...they can't really, but they don't have to justify anything. We have all agreed to let them do whatever they want by 'agreeing' to their latest 'terms and conditions'.

(Hanging on to the money for 2 un-necessary weeks means they can use it somewhere else to earn loadsa dough 💰)

'And what are they going to do on all the occasions when Royal Mail fails and the parcel stays in transit forever, despite the buyer receiving it?'

I think ebay have done their sums and worked out that paying out on a few disappearing parcels is way more cost effective than having to pay humans to actually sort out problems.

'And how will combining postage work?'

Not a clue. This will be another of the 'wait and see' questions....

Ebay should NOT fiddle with the price and at the same time sitting on our money. Ebay only protects the buyers and treat us differently. Who says that buyers are all honest? I have met quite a few craftly and greedy ones.

I will never, NEVER use either of them. We used Grays and it was saga after saga. EVRI blamed Packlink and vice versa. I screamed and kicked, nn! But I let the CEO's European counterparts know of his not taking responsibility and in the end I still lost out £2. I won't use either of them.

It was announced last year in eBay Announcements and there were eBay messages sent to members too.

At eBay, we’re committed to making our policies clear and our services easy to use. We wanted to let you know that we’re updating our Payments Terms of Use, effective from 4 February 2025

How am I to know when the buyers have received the items? How long are you going to sit on the money. If you sit on the money, you make interest and so why fiddle with the price structure? You shouldn't do both. I don't remember seeing this notification.

I'm not sitting on your money nor is anyone here,  we are members like yourself,  just trying to inform others, help others,  understand the new changes coming in, it's not liked by many , you are not alone.

'Digital money',  money held,  earns no interest for eBay.

There is an announcement tab on every eBay page at the bottom,  it's there for all to use and keep up to date with the constant changes on the site.

I'm not aiming at you. I did see the word mentor. But I have no idea why not earning interest if you're sitting on money!

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

I understand you're not aiming at me,  but you keep saying ' you're' sitting on money,  and not eBay sitting on money.  We are all members like yourself.  eBay never visit this board, shame in a way!

Money held earns no interest for eBay, it's digital money.

The new rules coming in is disliked by many , one just needs to see the many threads on this forum, but it's here to stay,  not liking a change,  is Not going to change anything being implemented by eBay.

It's coming and it's staying , whether we, as members stay or not , that is entirely up to the individual,  I know what I'll be doing.

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

Well I never!  One learns something here every day.

Community managers in the past have explained and confirmed the No interest on money held,  so will be asking them tomorrow when this has changed.

This from their help pages, so you see the vast discrepancy!

If we place a hold on your funds, it will usually be resolved within 30 days, but in rare circumstances it may take longer. For most orders, adding tracking information can help you receive your funds faster. eBay does not earn interest on held funds.

Thank you for that link @bojangled  it will be passed on !  😶

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

eBay want every single item to be sent tracked, this is why they have basically pushed out the low value sellers and put payout holds on their items without tracking, they don't want to make it worthwhile for them to sell and ship these items.

Buyers want tracking no matter what the items value, it is becoming industry standard now across ecommerce, buyers do not want to be waiting or wondering if their item will arrive or even if its been shipped at all, they want a delivery day.

eBay know this improves conversions and buyer confidence. It is frustrating when you buy from someone and they don't upload tracking and all you get is a delivery date which is often not met because the seller hasn't actually shipped your item just marked it as dispatched.

I bought an item from a private seller before xmas and the exact same happening, when I questioned the seller they said they hadn't had time to post yet but had marked it as dispatched, is that a good experience for a buyer to have? If i was new to eBay I may never even return back here.

Over the last few years selling online has changed so much it's unrecognisable, there are so many regulations, taxes that have to be followed that governments and marketplaces have introduced.

We have two options, we adapt or move onto something else, we can all complain how unfair it is but things are not going to change back, too much money has been invested to implement these changes.

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

OK! I have just sold £14 for 4 packets of seeds (a very good, no, GOOD, day) and £4.30 for postage. HOW MUCH will I get in the end please? It's so confusing. Is ebay taking money from me? Should I refund a generous postage discount. I have no idea. Can some clever admin show me a conversion table as the end of the day, it all boils down to how much I will get and of course, I begrudge the time they sit on my money. If the buyer receives items within 3 days, can I get the money earlier?

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

Same here.  I'm also a private seller - a retired academic selling a large number of books acquired over a lifetime and that I no longer have space for.  Ebay's description of the new fees structure is frustratingly unclear but it looks like seller fees by another name.  It's already difficult to sell at a competitive price given Royal Mail's incessant price rises.  To make matters worse I believe HMRC are now demanding details from Ebay on anyone selling more than 30 odd items per annum.  Under this punitive labour government I wouldn't be surprised if even private sellers selling their own possessions end up paying tax on Ebay 'income'.  I might just give up and knock Ebay on the head.

Re: Ebay's new Buyers' protection fee from the 4th Feb

I presume you'll then only get paid that £1.99 once its arrival is confirmed? you'll be reliant on the honesty of your buyer or have to cough up a minimum of £2.70 for tracking.
