Hi, I am thinking about putting an item for sale on eBay for collection only.
As this will be the first time I'll have done this, could someone explain the steps involved, including payment options and how to confirm the person has collected the item. Plus any pitfalls to be aware of when selling a collection only item. Cheers.

For a collection item cash after purchase is best, athough this cannot be enforced , buyers will still have the option of paying by card or Paypal at eBay checkout.
No contact details can be exchanged before purchase.
If both you and the buyer have the app, the buyer may bring a QR code for you to scan, this confirms collection.
It's not mandatory to have this code, in which case, eBay recomend printing off a copy of the order, have the buyer sign and date it as collected. You then, mark the item as Picked Up or dispatched, as this is eBay's wording too, for a collected item.

Whilst you can't refuse an electronic payment via eBay checkout, which will go to eBay and then to your bank account, cash on collection is the best payment method for you to accept (no chances of the buyer opening a return or a chargeback).
In the payment options section make sure that you select cash as a payment option, and I'd put something in your description like "Cash on collection please, this will give you the opportunity to examine your item and make sure you're happy with it before paying”.
I'd also mention a collection time period i.e.within 7 days if you want it collected and out of the way within a given time period.

Thanks for the feedback, you guys sure do make it difficult to choose which one to make the solution, even though brakes's 'input' was a bit basic and, sorry, lacking in sparkle.
In the meantime, I'm sending you all a virtual roses chocolate, to tide you over, until you get the real ones (2 or 3) at Christmas.

If you make mine an orange or strawberry cream I will be your friend forever.

I've just thought of something that you may wish to bear in mind when listing the item for sale.
You say that you are considering listing the item as Collection In Person Only. Whilst there is nothing wrong with this, some potential buyers may prefer to pay in cash on collection rather than via eBay or credit/debit card. If you are open to the option of accepting cash on collection then I would advise you to include a line in the listing saying something along the lines of "I have included an option at Checkout for buyers to select the option to pay in cash on collection, should they wish to do so." That way, if a potential buyer sees your listing and he/she would prefer to pay in cash, then seeing that sentence may well prove to be the decisive factor for that buyer in committing to purchasing the item if they are happy with what they have seen in the pictures but had been holding back on committing to buying the item prior to that point because they didn't want to pay via PayPal, credit or debit card.
If you do decide to follow the advice given in the previous paragraph all you have to do when setting up the listing is to tick the option that gives the buyer the chance to select "I will pay the seller when I collect the item" and you're good to go. If you do not tick that option then the buyer will have no alternative but to pay for the item electonically, as opposed to paying in hard cash.
With regards to pitfalls, if you are going to allow people to collect from your home address but are somewhat hesitant about having a total stranger coming to your house to collect the item, then make sure that you have at least one other person present with you at the time of collection. Safety is paramount, and as they say, there's strength in numbers. That way if you do get a dubious kind of character turning up they're less likely to try anything on if they can see that they're outnumbered.

Thank you for your long reply, much appreciated.

Cash on collection is allowed/acceptable using these eBay links ... although another payment option should be offered, you do not have to agree to accept any other alternative payment methods >>
Collection in person ... Buyer sees > |

You can contact your seller to arrange to pay for and collect your item

"you do not have to agree to accept any other alternative payment methods"
Thanks, so as a 'collection only' item, I don't have to accept any other payment methods, except cash.

You can select the cash option, but it will be added to the other payment options for your buyer which can't be opted out of.
If a buyer wants to pay via eBay checkout with an electronic payment, they may.

Call it insider information or intuition but yes you are receiving 3 roses chocolates from eBay this Christmas but no mug or notepad, sorry.

Now I'm sad 😭 @wintersdawn1

What do you mean, 'we' and 'again'? I've never had any chocolates, none at all, at Christmas or at any other time of the year.
All I get is prissy little emails telling me that I get more INRs than my peers, and suggesting I send tracked - and emails telling me I'd get a zillion more sales if I promoted my listings.
No choccies for me.

Oh Tressy I didn't mean to make you sad, you are lovely 😍 🌹

Normalacy is about to change on October 1st
from that date onwards seller is expected to hand over the item but does not get any money until buyer goes home and tells ebay they have received their item. ( assuming they can be bothered, after all how many buyers bother to leave feedback ? unless it's negative )
and even then ebay will make you refund the buyer in full if buyer makes an item not as described claim (for whatever reason they fancy) upto 30 days after collecting the item.
an exchange of cash for goods will no longer be allowed as that is somehow deemed "unsafe for seller"
1984 doublespeak !
let's see how that works out when millions of sellers quit selling on ebay.
those sellers are usually also buyers, so ebay is going to loose millions of buyers as well as millions of sellers.

Buyers will receive a collection code, they give this to the seller when they go to collect their item.
eBay then know that the sale has been concluded.

This is such a seriously inconvenient innovation that I am considering selling my shares in EBay, as I suspect it will do the business quite a lot of harm.

So seller gets a code, what does seller do with the code if they don't use a smart phone etc: ?
