Can I ask a favour - can some of you check the following listing:
'M L HASKINS signed Through Beds of Stone 1928 1st HB Minnie Louise Haskins', item no 376155054204.
It's listed for £95, is showing in My Ebay as £95, but in search results, it's £114... (see pics)
Is this what others are seeing?
Many thanks in advance.

It's ebay's new buyer protection fee. You see the price you will receive for the item. Buyers see the price they will pay which includes the extra fee. Details here:

It's not that. This is a business seller, so BPF does not apply.
£95 + 20% VAT = £114
I'm pretty positive that's got something to do with it, although I don't know the intricacies of it. I'm sure someone will come along with a fuller explanation.

But that isn't for business sellers, is it? And not at 20%... and why not happening to my books listed a few minutes earlier? Thanks for looking.

Thanks, that's what I was thinking, it was suspiciously close to VAT rates... I just don't understand why they would single out this one listing, and what with books being 0% vat rated..
11-04-2025 4:58 PM
Have you checked the VAT rate that you have on the listing?
Books should be zero rated shouldn't they? Not that I'm that familiar with them in that regard.
But it seems very strange that it's exactly 20%. The other, is that Ebay may think that you are based outside the UK and are adding on VAT. Though it's not showing on that listing that you are.

Absolutely right, books are zero rated, and no VAT is added to the listing. I've also noticed that postage has also been increased by by 20%, maybe it's a glitch, maybe just hate me.

For some reason eBay are adding VAT. This can be determined by clicking the "See details" link next to the postage information:
That "Taxes" section is only shown if the seller is VAT registered, the item is located outside the UK and is £135.00 or less or the seller is located outside the UK and is offering a digitally downloaded product. So, for some reason eBay are adding 20% VAT on to the price even though none of the reasons they would be doing this are applicable.
Do you have any other items listed in the same category (Media > Books, Comics & Magazines > Antiquarian & Collectable)? I'm wondering if it is a category-specific issue.

Scrub that; you do and they're not affected. How bizarre.

It's definately VAT related. Placing the item in my basket and going to checkout shows the message 'Ebay has collected VAT on this order'. No idea why they think they should be collecting VAT though, so must be a glitch.
11-04-2025 5:17 PM
I have plenty listed in that category and they appear to be showing to me correctly at present. It would appear that it is not category specific; or at least not affecting everything in the category.

Curiouser and curiouser. The VAT element is not shown when I add the book to my basket nor at checkout although I do see a strange message about my (the buyer's) VAT ID being on file and the VAT being excluded:
I'm starting to think this is a new glitch that is affecting new listings with it being "Freaky Friday" (or the day eBay treats it's users as beta testers). Can someone who is not VAT registered try adding the book to their basket and going to checkout then report what is shown?

Okaydoke, many thanks to all for your efforts. I'll end this one listing and relist from scratch to see if that works.
Honestly, this site...

Thanks 4_bathrooms. I'll leave the listing up for a bit longer to see what any others run into...
Many thanks

No need; @sml192 has already confirmed eBay will - for some reason - be charging and remitting VAT if a non-VAT registered buyer purchases it.
Probably best to end it and try listing it again.

Right, many thanks for your help. Will zap that one and try again

I have just created two listings in this category, one auction, one buy it now - both appear to be fine at my end.
I did however use previously sold items as a template using sell similar to speed up the process. It could be restricted to freshly created listings from scratch. Sorry I don't have time to check that possibility out at the moment.

Book now ended and relisted (from scratch) and all seems correct - price and postage - so fingers crossed it was just a one-off.
Scrub that - just refreshed the page and the 20% is back. (Item 376155276767)

Thanks ett1954 - I almost always overwrite a sold or current listing (this one was), so it's back to the drawing board.

When I search for the item number or the book title, I get 'No exact matches found'. Also, it's not newly listed under your user name.
