Hi,
I sold a vehicle on eBay auction. I put it up for 7 days. After 7 days it turned out a fake account had bought the van and was the winning bid. The fake account has not messaged me or even tried to contact me after 3 days.
Well, anyway,
My question is. I paid £15 to post this vehicle on eBay for 7days. Will I still have to pay this or will I get it refunded? What happens? I don't want to pay eBay for their site having fake accounts.
I can mark the buyer as a none payer and none shower tomorrow I think, the 13th.
I can't believe how much time I've wasted on eBay. It's just as bad as I remember. I wish I had just put it on a different site and never used eBay. I will remember this in the future.
Thank you for replies.

Open an unpaid item case and most of your fees will be refunded
The listing fee is not refunded but the final value fee on the total price is refunded if the buyer does not pay
You would save money and hassle from scammers listing it as a classified ad for a one off fee of £25
The listing doesn't end until the buyer pays you and drives away and there no final value fees to pay either
As you have found, if you list vehicles s on eBay for auction, it attracts scammers and timewasters and you don't actually get a sale.

Hi,
It's £15 just to list a vehicle. If I have to pay this and not get refunded because of a fake account. I will leave eBay and I will not come back. eBay will lose another customer and I will go Amazon for item I need in the future. Where scamming is minimal.
I won't relist it as a classified. I will go auto trader and pay them £45 to list on their site and avoid every scammer off eBay possible. This vehicle isnt going to get on eBay ever again. Not a chance I'm wasting my time with eBay. I wasted 7 days of an auction and then 4 days before I can mark it down as none payment/ none turn up/ none contacted. All that account gets is a strike. A strike? Coating me all this lonely and hassle and all the account gets is a pathetic strike.
I will leave eBay is the charges stand. I won't take it and I will leave.

It's the same as if you paid newsagent to put a card in the window, you pay that whether or not you get a sale.
If your car doesn't sell on Auto trader, do you get your £45 back?

Hi,
Did the newsagent scam me? No eBay has allowed people to scam.
Will the vehicle sell on auto trader without scammers? Yes?
No wonder eBay is dead. No wonder it's gone down hill and has thousands of negative reviews and all people are jumping from eBay to where ever they can. It's only a matter of time until eBay is gone.

For information :-
Vehicle listing fees are charged for each listing/relisting whether sold or not and are non refundable --- best to use Classified Ads >
Using a PC/Laptop > Classified Ads. at total £19. 99 will allow the exchange of contact details for viewing and price negotiation over a 30 day period ... set the Start price at or near the price that you would find acceptable --- Avoid inviting Offers which may never complete and just continue to Negotiate an acceptable selling price ... only remove the Ad. when you have a definite buyer with Cash in hand or Bank Transfer is safely deposited/confirmed before handing over Car keys/documents on buyer collection. No further FVF selling fee is charged.

If you list a vehicle in Classified Ad format it's not possible for it to sell to a non-payer.
Your listing runs for 30 days, during which you can arrange for potential buyers to view your item, you can then end it once paid. You can accept offers too (you don't accept the offer until the buyer has been to view first).

This is not useful at all. Ive already done an auction for 7 days and a fake account won it. I will leave ebay if I still have to pay £15 and not receiving what I paid for. I paid for my vehicle to be sold on ebay. I didnt pay for a scammer to win it and waste 11 days of my time. If this is the case I will close my ebay account down and I will leave ebay just like every other person who is annoyed at ebay. I will go to amazon. I will not put my vehicle back on ebay and I will go to auto trader and pay double to a none scamming site. ebay in 2025 is a dead site.

I'm not paying another £20 for ebay to have scammers try to scam me again. Ive already paid £15 to have scammers waste my time on ebay. ebay is a dead site in 2025. It might as well just close down because of the amount of people jumping ship and leaving for sites like vinted, marketplace, amazon etc. Im not paying twice to sell a vehilce that should have already been sold 4 days ago. ebay can start banning ip address of scammers.

I am sorry but you don't seem to understand the relationship you had with ebay. You most certainly did not pay for your vehicle to be sold on ebay, you paid for your vehicle to be advertised on ebay.
You therefore did receive what you paid for.
You are not going to get a refund of the listing fees. You agreed ebay's T&Cs when you use the site that these were non refundable, even if you didn't actually read the T&Cs.
No-one 'scammed' you. Not even the buyer, they just didn't go through with the purchase.

Your choice ... Vehicle listing fees are not refunded and a FVF fee of 1% of the final transaction (min. £25, max. £45). is due unless the transaction is cancelled correctly >

As you dont seem to understand, Ive googled this for you. definition of an auction.
" a public sale in which goods or property are sold to the highest bidder".
I didn't receive what I paid for.
How long do you think ebay can last with everyone leaving the site on a daily basic and going to amazon, marketplace, vinted? ebay is almost a dead site now. It's been dying for years and ran into the ground. Do you think ebay is something special?
Do you think for £15.48, its worth eBay losing another customer for the next 30 + years? Do you know how much I will purchase online in the next 30 years. Do you think its worth ebay giving the £15.48 back or to keep the £15.48 and lose my business for the next 30+ years?

Hold on. Who benefits from this event ? eBay.
If you take it on the chin and relist, pay again, who benefits then ? eBay.
If I were eBay, I could outbid and not pay on many items.
I love the idea that the mass response on here defending eBay on certain topics truly think they are 100% right. Especially when it costs the small people and profits eBay.
You couldn't make it up.
13-02-2025 12:20 PM
The only people making things up are those that don't like what ebay does, even when what they do is exactly as set out in the User Agreement and policy pages on the site.
The others are not defending ebay, they are simply saying it as it actually is.
13-02-2025 12:21 PM
Irrelevant.

As an experienced mentor, you should be siding with reality, not yes man mentality. Your job is to do what is right, not what supports ebay best. I know you can do it, I've seen you do it.
13-02-2025 3:59 PM
I side with facts.

You are sometimes very wrong.

That would be your choice then.
I have tried to explain how a Classified Ad prevents you from having to deal with non-payers and scammers, but you must do what's best for you. If you want to cut your losses at £14.99 and sell elsewhere, then do that.

I am not an ebay brown-noser but I think it may difficult for ebay to prevent certain people from using their site as we all appear just as people with an ebay account. Maybe if certain ebay users have a history of unacceptable behaviour then perhaps ebay can do something about that.
