Does Simple Delivery assume that all private sellers have a printer?

When simple delivery is made mandatory for private sellers will the process be as follows:

* Purchasing buyer chooses the postage option they want i.e. Royal Mail or EVRI

* Buyer completes checkout, buying the postage from ebay

* Ebay sends the postage label to the private seller

What if a private seller does not have a printer to print the label that ebay sends them?

You will receive a QR code that you use to print an EVRi or RM label at the parcel shop or post office.

As SD stands at the moment, the buyer chooses between Standard Tracked or Express Tracked - there is no option to choose RM or Evri.

If the seller doesn't have a printer, but does have a smart phone, they can take the phone with the parcel to the drop off point, where they use the QR code to print a label.

If the seller has neither printer nor smart phone, they are stuffed, and unlikely to be able to sell on here.

Guess we'll have to wait and see but it's a slippery slope and one that shouldn't be started. Once buyers think they are in charge of postage they'll be telling the sellers how to.

"It doesn't need a small parcel, stick it in a padded envelope, it'll be fine."

& if it isn't I wonder how quickly they'll remember and not make a claim.

It's a ridiculous scheme.

Ebay are presuming that everybody has a printer *or* a smart phone.

With the smart phone you can take your digital label to parcel shops and they'll supposedly print it out for you....

That's going to be fun in some of the shambolic 'parcel drop offs' I've seen, (where the guy behind the counter didn't speak English)

I've got to put my hand up to being one of the few remaining adults without a smart-phone.

(yeah, yeah, I know ......'get with it grandma', 'stop being King Cnut holding back the tide ', etc. etc.  But I really don't want one : I've enough self-knowledge to realise, that if I have the internet in my pocket at all times, I'll never read a book again....😒)

Simple, just take your desktop and monitor to the post office, find a socket near the counter, turn it on and show them the screen with the QR code on it.

Not having a smart more is no barrier to using SD

😀

And if there is no socket, take the following items

  • Generator and fuel
  • Extension lead
  • Multi-plug adaptor for monitor and desktop leads
  • Portable router and batteries
  • Desktop computer and power and connection leads
  • Monitor and power lead and computer lead

See! Easy!

People are just making excuses..

I've got to put my hand up to being one of the few remaining adults without a smart-phone.

Me one too.

But Im reluctant to be receiving a free phone ( inability to use one is quite restrictive )or a printer from ebay to participate in the process they have designed.

As for picking up labels at the Post Office, how does that fit into the 'Drop and Go' operation?

Out of a large history of ill 'planned' (and i use that word with tongue in cheek) ventures, this one carries the biscuit - and all to make extra money for ebay -

Although we are assured that Evri and RM can both print labels at the drop-off point, or when they are uplifted from your home, I can envisage HUGE problems with this.

I sell mostly 7" singles from my collection, so virtually all of my packages look the same - the same size, same weight, and same mailer. On a (very) good weekend I might sell as many as ten records, all to be posted on Monday.

I can't see any employee of Royal Mail or Evri being happy having to print ten labels, and wait for me to attach them, hopefully to the correct packages. (I say that as, would you trust them to attach them to the correct packages?) I know I can write the recipients name on each one to help identify them, but I still can't see RM/Evri being particularly chuffed at having to go through all this faff.

The potential for mix-ups is huge. I am lucky that I have a printer, so, no matter what SD tells me to do, I will be responsible for attaching labels to the correct packages, as I do now, but I don't know if I would continue, if I had to rely on anyone else doing it.

Seller assumes all responsibility for this listing.

If im responsible then EVRI will not be making an appearance on the listings i pay for.

My responsibility - i respect and value my customers ( yes an alien sentiment to ebay) , as such i refuse to use an inferior postage service EVRI - id prefer to cancel any order first

eBay will almost certainly sanction your account if you cancel an order for those reasons.

Thanks for the replies.

Do we know yet which way round the Standard and Express delivery are, i.e. which is Royal Mail and which is EVRI?

If EVRI is standard (and so cheaper) I can imagine a lot of buyers selecting that.  I have wonderful EVRI delivery people here but know that is not always the case.

Nothing to do with eBay.

I had a customer return from my website.

I offered to email the label for him to print - He had no printer

So I sent a download with the bar code to take to the Evri drop off - Sorry mate, we don`t print here

Ended up having to print the label myself and posting it to him.

But we got there in the end without eBay in the middle dictating how to resolve.

So that is just 2 issues above that may be problematic.

Another problem may be some smaller drop off shops will have a size limit and refuse

the courier/s that eBay has chosen.

But as with all the potential stumbling blocks from other posters above, I am sure eBay will

have taken it all into account and have a plan of action . Excuse my sarcasm

As far as I can tell, Ebay expect us to pack the item when we list it so we can put in the correct weight and dimensions so they choose the right postage when the listing is complete.

Not just yours, but yes.

By using their site you agree to their terms and conditions and if/when Simple Delivery rolls out a buyer of yours selects Evri for delivery at purchase you will have to do that.

Which means combined deliveries are gone. A way that customers could save money before. An entirely valid sales method wiped out by "big thinkers".

A round of applause if you please.

'My partner and I don't have printers or smart phones .'

Nice to know I'm not quite alone in this! 😁

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There *may* be a light in the up and coming darkness of Simple Delivery : that is the categories that *won't* be allowed to use SD.

I'm hoping that the 'restricted' lists (the goods couriers won't pay comensation for if they get damaged) will be excluded from Simple Delivery. As ebay seem to be implying that ebay ,*not the seller*, would be liable for refunds on goods damaged in the post, it seems possible that Simple Delivery won't include 'breakables'.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You mentioned 'a mug in a padded envelope' ; well if you read the Evri 'exclusion from compensation' list, go to the point that starts 'ceramic or composite items....'  would that imply that a mug is excluded?  If so , you may escape the noose of Simple Delivery. ?

But I am just speculating.

We're not going to find out about categories until we're told....as irritating as that is 🙄
