Apparently I "authorised a payment to eBay Commerce UK Ltd"

I made an offer  on an item where I said I would pick this item up and cash on collection.

Seemingly my offer was accepted and inadvertently without any clicks of buttons, I've paid for this and postage too.

Since when did an offer, and acceptance, construe to be authorising eBay to take payment with a means not intended?

Since ebay allowed sellers to have immediate payment required for accepted offers.

Once you have set up a payment method for immediate payment it applies to all future offers where the seller requires it, with no further input from you.

Unfortunately it seems it's the default setting and many sellers don't know it's on and so don't know to take it off, as your seller should have done if they listed a collection item.

By the way, you can't make your offer have conditions that are different to the ones the seller has on the listing, e.g you can't say cash on collection if the seller didn't list with that option.  The only thing an offer can stipulate is the amount you are offering.

Ok, I will pass the info on.

Yes of course I can make conditions, that is what the message box is for. If they aren't acceptable then the seller can make a counter offer or simply turn the offer down.

Unfortunately due to one of eBay's latest "site improvements" - better known in English as "making a complete and utter pig's ear of things", it now appears to be the case that eBay have automatically opted sellers in to receiving payment via card or PayPal if they receive a Best Offer for an item that they have advertised for sale.

Given that this appears to have done without eBay communicating the change to sellers or buyers, the best option if you are considering making a Best Offer would be to use the Ask Seller A Question option to ask if they have opted out of the automatic payment option so as to allow buyers to pay with cash on collection.  For items listed as Collection In Person Only it is best to agree with the seller to pay in cash when you collect the item, as that way if the goods are not as described you can just tell the seller that you've changed your mind and walk away with your money still in your wallet.  With the new system in place this means that the seller already has your money and you will have to open an eBay case in order to try and get the money back again!

What if a seller has it set up to automatically approve offers above  a certain amount?  They won't see your message.

I'm not sure how that's relevant to the case in hand?

If my offer is autmatically rejected then no payment has been made and I will see that the offer has been rejected?

Is this a one off 'contract' twixt a specific seller and a specific buyer?

Does ebay now have access and have the ability to take funds from my bank on items i have won in auctions etc at their will, once the 4 days sentance kicks in.

I ask as i had the mis fortune of collecting 6 items from a buyer - set sale, in my Shopping Cart.

As is normal, the seller could not combine the items as (and offer a combined shipping which he wanted to do) 'something ' is pre ordained by ebay as 'Immediate Payment' required, and adjustments appears impossible.  So i had to make 6 separate payments and the seller refund what we agreed.

It means that once you have entered your payment details in order to make an offer where the seller has used the immediate payment required setting, when you make any other offer on any other listing by any seller, and that seller has immediate payment required,  eBay will take the payment from the source you set up for the first offer.

It does not currently apply to auctions.

Thanks for that reply - it was what i was fearing - so now , by stealth on ebays side, or stupidity in trusting ebay, i have allowed ebay to raid my bank now at will.

I assume there is no way of keeping ebay from having access now?

On my buying account, Ill delete all my set sale saves and stick to auctions - how are ebay going to handle combined invoices? Which is where this fiasco began.

Again thanks  .

When you enter payment details for an offer there is some small print that tells you eBay will use that payment method in future where immediate payment is required for offers.  Not for any other reason.  They will see it as helping you not to keep having to enter your details each time, based on the idea that offers are meant to be binding and paid if accepted.

Buyers can remove the payment method from their account if it concerns them, and enter them anew when they make another offer on an immediate payment required listing.

Thanks again -

I find it hard ebay ever consider the users, they design new features to include extra clicks which appear un needed.

Im glad there is an option to remove a payment method from ebay - should a further payment method be added later will that become an 'auto access' avenue for ebay for the future?

My god how this site has changed over time 😞

eBay don't tell you how to stop automatic payments for offers.

It's a shame there's not an opt out tick box but that would make it too easy.

If the auto payment is with a debit card you have to go to your eBay payment options page and remove your card details then add them again.

However if the automatic payment was with PayPal you have to log into your PayPal account.

Go into settings to payments and in the automatic payments section find the one for eBay and cancel it.

It doesn't remove it completely just makes it inactive but stops eBay using it.

Do either of the above should make it like you are starting from scratch next time you make an offer that requires your payment details.

I agree with your comment - how this site has changed over time - I remember the days when you could see who you were bidding against, and even email them.  Long ago.

This is a member to member forum.  You need to contact the seller to request a cancellation.  They don't have to accept though.
