Ebay clothes sales down

Hi all,

I have a business account and sell high end clothes - mainly used. I have been recently wondering if Vinted if causing a drop in sales on Ebay. I know that at the moment you can't be a business seller on Vinted ( that may change )....does anyone know the pros and cons of buying and selling on Vinted compared to Ebay. Do we think that Ebay can survive the likes of Vinted in the future? I would be interested in people's opinions. I am going to continue to sell on Ebay as I have no choice really. Looking at Vinted there do seem to be some very cheap even new with tags items on clothing. Has anyone had experience buying on Vinted? One thing I noticed is if there is a problem you only have 2 days to report a problem!

Re: Ebay clothes sales down

Ah yeah I forgot that bit.

Ive got hundreds of clothes on rails to sell, I hate listing clothing so the appeal of whatnot is lower sale prices but the ability to move things fast. I like it as it's the polar opposite to the ebay listing process.

Whatnot also offers NO RETURNS. Yup, if your buyer wants to return, Whatnot takes it back.  God knows what they do with the stuff... maybe at those prices no one can be bothered to return... Why return a T-shirt when, if it doesnt fit, it is still a very cheap tea towel.

Re: Ebay clothes sales down

I don't sell clothes on eBay but if I have something to sell then vinted is the place but only if you don't mind selling stuff for next to nothing and expecting people to try and knock you down to ridiculous prices. With ebay you can at least stop that by setting best offer limits

Yes the listing process is much easier but I've seen so many social media posts naming and shaming sellers sometimes unjustified   Yes there are no fees on vinted but I think it's only a matter of time before that changes and I've also heard that they crack down when they suspect a business seller

No way will eBay ever consider some camera based auction system.

Re: Ebay clothes sales down

I'm leaving eBay sales are down in general. I have managed to clear my wardrobe on Vinted and have been happy with how it has been going so far. You just have to be honest and upfront. I have also started to switch my inventory over . As why should eBay win!

Re: Ebay clothes sales down

Can't say I'm a fan of vinted, I bought my wife a pair of shoes from there last year, she's a 6 and they were advertised as a 6. They arrived, size 5.

I asked the seller to accept a return, she said oops my mistake but I don't do returns. Raised the case with vinted and they said it's up to the seller, I pointed out that the item was significantly not as described  and I am basically entitled to a return and refund, they replied back that they are a Lithuanian company and are not bound by UK laws! Then closed my case in the sellers favour.  To top it off the seller wrote again saying she hope I'd learnt my lesson for having the audacity to open a case against her!

Sorry to go on, as you can tell I'm still a bit riled up by it! 😆🤣

Re: Ebay clothes sales down

Yup, all my friends and neighbours know I sell on ebay, so talk to me about 'cases' on Vinted as well. I have heard of endless complaints like this. Most sellers will eventually take returns but at buyer's cost despite items being SNAD. Every person you speak to says 'never again' BUT what is interesting is most wind down, and go back again because the prices are so cheap. I think the deal is that gradually people expect a few corkers but are okay if the stream of bargains outweighs them. Vinted CS may know that they need to be stern to stop a flood of cases opening. They know that people still return anyway so why start improving the return process? After all your shoes just didn't fit! I know, I know they were SNAD but you get my point. (All just my opinion of course).

What is worrying for me is that this coincides with a rise in returns. What I fear is that 'choosy perfectionists' and 'renters' are having to choose ebay - so we lose 'make-doers' just as we gain 'perfectionists' and scammers and so the % split changes (I hope that makes sense). Previously I had put my rise in returns down to cost of living crisis and people obviously can't 'write off' bad buys... but I now suspect the rise of Vinted as well.

I think we are still seeing Vinted play out... especially now eBay has responded with no fees on clothing.
