It is actually illegal for E Bay to take a percentage of postage costs

In the UK the mail is owned by the Crown  in effect Her Majesty the Queen

.Any postage revenue is entirely payable to her .

For E bay to take a percentage of this is in fact theft.

This action should be reported to the TRADING STANDARDS  organisation  as it is in fact an illegal act of theft.

I will close my account  anyway.

gone too far with  greed this time E Bay

I agree. This will effectively kill a lot of selling as profits will be squeezed and will make it non-viable. Are buyers going to put up with increased postage fees to compensate? I don't think so.

I think this only applies to items sent via Royal mail and not through other delivery services such as Yodel, or Hermes. Be interesting though if Ebay had to revise their policy to take HM into account :smileyhappy:

Trading Standards (in capital letters or otherwise) don't deal with this sort of thing.

And it couldn't possibly be "theft".

What complete nonsense as Amazon charges the fees on all the sale (included postage) and no one over there says its theft  but Ebay do the same and now all of a sudden its considered theft.

People are so desperate to insult Ebay that they're obviously making up stuff as they go along to the point of looking rather foolish.

Ebay will not be charging fees on postage stamps.

They will be charging fees on the cost the seller is charging for providing a service, that of sending the goods to the buyer.

How do you think it was possible that VAT could be chargeable on P&P?

A post office is a building and those cannot talk so it must have been an employee who told you that.   Highly doubtful that the employee has the qualifications needed to make legal determinations.  Most of them cannot even tell you accurately about postal regulations.

If you are sure it was a post office that spoke then there are problems here well beyond anything to do with Ebay.

Totaly agree, this is another rip off from Robin Hood eBay, only they dont give to the poor.

Their is no such thing as free postage,( If you know of a PO that does not charge to send your items, then please let everyone know where it is!!) if you add it to the item, you will still be charged on the total.

Also if you were unaware, eBay and PayPal are one and the same, so they are getting two lots of fees from us. It stinks!!!

Is eBay, or anyone for that matter, allowed to profit from Royal Mail postal prices, by in theary increasing them for themselves,

I think not, it would be interesting to see what Royal Mail have to say about it!!!

It would be interesting to see what the Office of Fair Trading would have to say about all this. Ebay charge fees on the total sale including the postage, and then PayPal, (part of eBay), charge fees on that total.

Apples and oranges. Amazon is not an auction site and Amazon is 99.9% business traders. Only thing in common is their tax  avoidance schemes, and the secretiveness of their owners.

do not know if it is illegal but it is certainly immoral.

there are a lot of us private sellers going over to sell on ebid and facebook

ebay have overstepped the mark this time, they have forgotten why they started the site up in the first place.
