I sold an item on the 28th oct. Buyer opens case not received on 6th nov. I message her to say check the tracking. Delivery was attempted twice and was waiting for her at her local mail centre.
16th nov. I want a refund immediately.
Sorry but you will have to collect your item or rearrange delivery.
i want it delivered by 8.00 tonight.
sorry but posties don’t deliver in the evening.
well I want it by 9.30 tomorrow morning.
There is no guarantee on delivery.
your item is waiting for you at your local mail depot.
where is my local depot.
a screenshot of directions, phone number and opening times was provided
Totally ignored and the parcel was sent to a main depot to be returned to me after it was there for 20 days because it was not collected.
again opens a case today to say her item hasn’t arrived.
parcel has not come back to me either….

For the refund, if any, it shouldn't include the postage you spent on this fruitless sale.
The problem with not refunding in full or only issuing a partial refund (can private sellers even issue partial refunds?) is the buyer can still open a chargeback/dispute with their payment provider. Whilst tracking showing attempted delivery is good enough for eBay's MBG the tracking needs to show a status of "delivered" for the seller to be protected by eBay's payment dispute seller protections.

I don't know about the rest of your response, but yes, private sellers can do partial refunds. I've quite often done so with buyers of several items where I've saved on postage.

The OP is a business seller so is legally obliged to refund in full if the item is returned to them.

Thanks, didn't know that. No wonder there are so many stories these days of people who abuse by returning goods instead of e.g. hiring a dress for a party.

Oh John... that's been going on for flippin' ever!
In one of my many and varied jobs, 30 years ago, I sold Nice Hats to Nice Ladies who were going to Nice Weddings.... quite a lot would come back the following week because they'd 'changed their mind' or 'had decided on another colour scheme' or whatever.
And would try to return a definitely-worn hat with lots of make-up smears over the inside of the brow-band....oops.

OK, I'm not up to speed on this, I've yet to do a Grayson Perry. A 1960s sports jacket would probably do me for a wedding. Reminds me, I ought to try listing old clothes.

Because the item is now marked as being returned by the carrier, ebay as you have mentioned will hold your funds and extend the case to allow time for you to receive it.
ebay will find in favour of the buyer when the tracking shows delivered if the buyer escalates and quite possibly if it is manually reviewed which is likely in this case -
quite simply the delivered to your address will override the attempted delivery to the customer and the INR will not show delivery to the buyer's address on the order - the other point ebay will make is that the INR will automatically be treated as a return.
The mbg is straight forward even in these situations, for information if the case was opened and closed before the item was marked as being returned in the tracking the case would close in you the seller's favour because of the attempted delivery and no evidence of a return.
To close in your favour the item would have to remain in transit to you in the maximum time ebay keep the case open - ebay can extend the open time more than once - even if the item remained in transit you or the buyer would have to appeal which may well end up with a courtesy refund from ebay

@johnwash1 , if you're going to enter the shark-infested waters of clothing retail, you really must get up to date with the marketing buzz words.
Haven't you heard? Nowadays, second hand clothing is never 'old'. It's vintage, retro, pre-loved, trad, old fogey, 70s, 80s, shabby chic, reclaimed, upcycled, repurposed, circular fashion - and a whole host of other words. What it absolutely isn't is 'old'.
The same word-washing is now applied to dogs. At one time, a mixed breed was called a mutt. If it was a pedigree mix, it was a sure sign that you were an irresponsible owner who'd lost control of their female dog in the park. The unwilling breeder would be happy to take a fiver for a puppy.
Now they're labradoodles and other strange names - in demand and cost upwards of £500. How times have changed.

I've thought of another one since - my mind wanders when I'm ironing ribbon - a 'charity find'.

You must refund in full once ethe item arrives back with you.
Was the second case actually a charge back you never answered that query.
