Sellers beware of a return scam - changing delivery address on returns label

We have had two buyers try to scam us recently using eBay returns. It appears that they open a return as normal on eBay and obtain their Royal Mail Tracked Returns label. However, the item is returned to a different address delivered by the same Royal Mail delivery office, so it appears that it has been delivered and eBay will accept it as delivered. Both times that this happened I know that the address was somehow changed on the returns label as I know where it was delivered to and it was not us, although I do not know what was actually returned as I didn't see the parcel (it could be an empty box - the first time it happened I was told it weighed 200g when the item should have been around 8kg). Both times I contacted eBay customer support and after investigating the buyer, they closed their accounts as there must have been a pattern of similar behaviour.

In my experience having a crime reference number makes eBay comply with less pushback and faster. Also with no guarantee you would be covered, you’ll need a police reference anyway, for small claims court. I wouldn’t let 1400 go!

Sellers beware of a return scam - changing delivery address on returns label

hello everyone, I thought I'd some information regarding some issues I've had.  My husband has sold a a couple of Iphones in his eBay account and they were brand new phones, iPhone 15's. The buyers were both under 5 feedback and both were click and collect so I don't have the buyers address. The buyers straight away opened a return upon receiving the phone and it was accepted as my husband has returns on. My husband provided a returns label to the buyer, Royal Mail special delivery by 1pm.

One package was received the next day and it contained two bags of sweets. The second phone was posted back and it arrived not the next day but the day after. It showed delivered on tracking and signed for but we didn't receive anything. After calling Royal Mail, they informed us that the delivery was made to Toolstation near our home. We drove to Toolstation and they had it and the bizzare moment was when the label was addressed to Toolstation but it had the tracking number from the label we sent! The label was also a tracked 48hr and not the special delivery. So the buyer must have cut the barcode and tracking number and pasted it into a tracked 48 delivery he created himself. The parcel contained an international food item they probably purchased from the collection point (local shop) and empty cat food packaging with some rubbish. We called Royal Mail and they said that they go by what is actually written on the label. The Rep also mentioned that this is a recurring problem but they can't do anything about it as their job is to just delivered from point A to point B as per what is showing on the label. We have opened a case with eBay and hopefully the suspicious movements in tracking will show that there was foul play and case will be in our favour.

The tracking does show a signature and a picture of the delivery however, so it could be that the postman upon scanning was requested a signature and a picture because the tracking number is originally a special delivery tracking number. But I think they do this for general tracked deliveries that don't require a signature as well. So I really think it does not matter whether using the pre approved eBay label or providing your own.

Both have been reported to Action Fraud and the reference numbers have been provided to eBay. The first was in favour of the buyer who received the refund but then eBay refunded us. The second is ongoing and we should hear back soon. We know there is seller protection and that the buyer may be refunded and then eBay coughing up and paying us, but I just hope that the buyer loses and doesn't get money back and lives with the phone as a memory to the loss.

Both buyers have been reported and this is important so eBay can possibly learn and develop a system on this. Maybe they should dedicate a centre in which Tech items are shipped through as a point of passing, similar to the Authenticity guarantee programme. They will cough up a lot of money on this, but if there is a massive rise in scams, then it might save them money like this and keep dodgy buyers away.

Only a percentage will be posting their issues here. Every organisation we speak to involved in the selling process such as Royal Mail, Action Fraud and eBay themselves have confirmed that these cases are rising! Hopefully somebody clever out there will develop something for this.

Sellers beware of a return scam - changing delivery address on returns label

A simple way to stop this scam would be for eBay to provide the buyer with a 2D barcode only and not a 6x4 label, that way a label can only be produced at the post office and it can't then be altered.

We have had about 4 of these scams this year on ebay so the problem is growing. When we have retrieved the parcels they have always been empty boxes, eBay have covered us on appeal once providing them with an email from the Royal Mail confirming the item was not delivered to the returns address.

Out of all the scams I would rather deal with this as eBay covers you 100%, the wrong item returned scam or nothing at all is hit or miss and eBay can take the stance 'we can't verify what was sent or sent back' nonsense.

You are very unlikely to get a letter from Royal Mail stating you didn't receive something. What eBay are likely referring to is a completed P91 "Denial of Receipt" form but - as far as I am aware - these are only sent to the named recipient when the sender makes a claim against Royal Mail for loss.

At the bottom of the message/case where eBay have decided in the seller's favour there should be a link to appeal eBay's decision. Follow these instructions then click the appeal link making sure you include the reference number (and anything else you receive) from Action Fraud:

  1. File a report with Action Fraud.
  2. Click the "Appeal this decision" link found at the bottom of the eBay dispute/case.
  3. Make sure you include the reference number you were given by Action Fraud earlier in your appeal.
  4. Please let us know how you get on.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Did you get it all sorted? I think I have asked everywhere evrything I could possibly need and still waiting for thier answers. eBay isn't much helpful. it is so stressful. they just keep saying I have got 30days to solve the problem. I just don't understand that it seems to happen several times already, why eBay just proceed to close the case at buyer's favour even though they know it is happening to sellers...

Yes, my been solved eBay give my money back , steps that I suggest to do , ring Royal Mail ( do online is waste of time) tell them that is a return not delivered to you and you would like know where the parcel is , that you try contact the seller but was useless so you are out of pocket and you need a proof in writing that parcel not been delivered to your address

should take about 10 days the investigation, but the Royal Mail confirmed that parcel been delivered to other address in writing . This start been scary sale on eBay ..EBay need do something about this ...

i am having the same type of issues. i told ebay the buyer should not be able to see the tracking and delivery when opening up the tracking details because if they have had it delivered and it does not get scanned so there for the buyers can abuse it and all ebay say is they are chqancers. i told them this suckes. that you should block any buyer from seeing the tracking details then they would not be able to deny receaving the good s

If that happens and the buyer opens an INR case you file a claim for loss with Royal Mail. Their retail compensation policy (1st & 2nd Class services) provides compensation up to £20, Tracked offers compensation up to £150 and Special Delivery Guaranteed offers £750 (or up to £10,000 if purchased with consequential loss cover). All subject to Royal Mail's T&Cs of course.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

I don't understand how blocking buyers from seeing the tracking details prevents them from saying they haven't received the goods?

I had the same problem. Ebay refunded me and blocked them. They got their money back through PayPal although ebay did refund me that through buyer protection

Royal Mail needs to figure out a way of easily checking that the address on their system is the same as the address on the label. They don't want to do it as it would be time consuming, but I really see that this is the only way to stop this from happening. Maybe the accepting post office could check it too?

Sellers beware of a return scam - changing delivery address on returns label

This just happened to me with a brand new iPhone. Buyer said it was faulty. EBay sent them a 48 hour Royal Mail tracked label but whilst it had my name on it the address was mikes away.  When I saw where it had been delivered, I drove up there met the occupants but whilst the package was well wrapped it was light as a feather. I videoed us opening it in their doorstep, nothing but some instructions fir a quadcopter!!

Had lots I've conversations with eBay but finally spoke with one if their customer support people who was as bright as a button.  She was able to bring up the return label they sent and I had uploaded the label on the empty package.  She noticed the weight description on the labels didn't match, neither dud the fonts and there us a series of letters and numbers, not the tracking number, that were way different.  She then checked the buyers account on the day if the purchase, they changed their address.

what's infuriating is that eBay refunded the buyer in spite of my protest! I've never had an issue for 21 years until now.  Back office team are now doing a manuel check and still awaiting a decision.  I have gone as far as I can with eBay but have also filled an ActionFraud report at eBay's request.

Sellers beware of a return scam - changing delivery address on returns label

This scam happened to me this week. It was a huge hassle to get resolved. I had to get proof from Royal Mail that the parcel had been delivered to the wrong address. This was not easy, but after a week of annoying them and going into the local sorting office, I managed to get a refund.
As others have said in this thread, the scammers are:

  1. Buying an item (in this case a phone)
  2. Taking a photo of a random phone and creating a dispute using that photo
  3. eBay issues them with a return label with my return address
  4. The scammer alters the address with photoshop or similar software, but keeps the barcode the same. In my case, they shipped it to a Vape Shop.
  5. The item gets marked as delivered successfully and the scammer gets a refund instantly, even though it has not been delivered at the correct address.

The scam works because eBay returns do not require a photo upon delivery, this is very hard to prove it went to the wrong address.  The postie who is delivering the parcel just reads the address that is written on the envelope, and not what is written on the scanner after they have scanned it as delivered.

In order to get a refund, you have to request the GPS coordinates to show it was not delivered to your address, and you also need an email that you can export as a PDF and send as proof to eBay. I could not get a "Proof of denial receipt" because the item was marked as delivered successfully

Sellers beware of a return scam - changing delivery address on returns label

Happen to us again...4th one this year.. but this time it was slightly different..

We changed our returns process such that we upload the returns label not eBay automatically sending a RM one.. i had to call cs to help with this.

Now scammer tried to request a RM/Evri label after I uploaded a DHL one..

They inboxed me mutilple times stating the collection point wouldnt accept.

So i sent over a DPD label.. oh yes i also asked for their home address as normally the buyer requests the sold item goes  to a collection point..

When i got the item back DPD has picked up on the incorrect address and reprinted the original label..  i could also see the old one the buyer tried to use..  DPD always take a door step image as well which helped.

They had simply copied and edited the old label changing only the first line of address to a college local to me.

eBay didnt refund the buyer but it is getting out of hand now and i can only see this scam getting worse...

I would definately recommed not using RM/Evri for your returns..  and also check the eBay account buyer name to the name given for delivery as in our case all 4 times it never matched...

From now on we will ask for a form of id before sending goods out if the names dont match otherwise we will just cancel the sale...

What difference does the name given for delivery make and what would the ID prove exactly?  There can be perfectly legitimate reasons for the name on the delivery being different to that of the account holder.

What i have found is that in our cases the account name is totally different.. and that a returns case is opened immediatley after they had collected the item.. requesting a full refund..

ID would prove their address.. clearly they are not giving their home address..

This scam is definetly on the increase and its spoiling it for genuine sellers and buyers
