Private Sellers Unite! We need to figure out a new sales strategy that works for us!

Hi everyone,

This discussion thread is for genuine private sellers only.

Okay, so we all know where we stand now with zero selling fees, payments on hold until 2 days beyond successful delivery and the new 4% Buyers Premium.

I am a 100% genuine seller with 24 listings of coins from my personal collection that I want to sell on.

Now, I used to have over 75 listings with many more of my coins for sale, and prior to last year I was selling a coin almost every day! And now..... I haven't sold a thing in 30 days!

I think we need a new sales strategy.

This is what I have tried so far without any success....

1. Reduced the price of my coins by 4%

2. Made shipping same day

3. Tried the full reset approach, which just doesn't seem to work anymore?

Nothing seems to be working?

Has anyone got a bright ideas on what I (and we) can do to try and get our items more visibility in Ebay search results?

Business sellers please feel free to contribute ideas, but also be conscious of the fact that I am talking about a strategy for private sellers to adopt, so please no suggestions of becoming business sellers ok?

So......

Ideas people!

Go!.........

Are you a coin collector yourself?

And postage is about right because we are forced to send by Fully Tracked service now.

You mean deducting 75p and THEN reducing by 4%?

RM48 Tracked costs £2.70 currently.

Yeah a small collection but I’ve got some experience.

You can still send untracked and charge 85p / £1.55 if you really wanted to.

Re: Private Sellers Unite! We need to figure out a new sales strategy that works for us!

No, I won't risk that now.

However, I think you are correct that £3.75 is too high for postage, so I'm reducing to £3 and will send via RM48 Tracked.

Thanks for suggesting!

Now what I want is for someone who knows about strategies that exploit the algorithm.... a bit like whoever came up with the nuclear reset strategy which worked for a while.

I don't think I made myself clear enough about what I am searching for....

Not postage or reduce prices that's obvious advice.....

Talk to me about innovative strategies for listings to help get better visibility....

Strategies like the nuclear reset which used to work but doesn't seem to anymore....

Who can tell me about that or point me towards people who do know such things?

It really depends on category.

Not that anyone would do this, but list silver content coins below spot price and algorithm won’t matter, buyers will trip over themselves to buy you out.

Honestly when it comes to numismatics, if your coin is a slow seller you have to price low-ish (in line with similar graded coins) and then if that isn’t enough, promoting at 5% won’t be the worst idea. You’re up against business sellers who are paying a fortune in fees, 5% PL is nothing.

Great advice thank you.

So does ANYONE have ANY new ideas on how to exploit the Ebay algorithm?

Re: Private Sellers Unite! We need to figure out a new sales strategy that works for us!

Simple. My "hobby-job" (visualise business sellers foam at mouth) generated a modest income (declared to HMRC) which I then recycled via ebay to indulge my various collecting interests. What I made contributed to the income of others. Now ebay have responded to pressure from business sellers and subsequently my ebay generated income is less, which means I spend less on other ebay sellers - including business sellers.

My plan is to boycott business sellers and buy only from private sellers who need every help they can get now that they all have massive restrictions. When ebay's revenue declines then ebay will act and reverse this idea and return to the spirit of a free market economy as it used to be.

There is nothing wrong with people generating cash, it all ultimately contributes to a healthier economy. I don't claim any benefits and declare any income and as a seller I offer a good service and have done for 20+ years.

That is true, but I have always insisted on posting via RM48 Tracked which is £2.70 for peace of mind.

Re: Private Sellers Unite! We need to figure out a new sales strategy that works for us!

Again, thanks for the mainly positive contributions thus far....

Let's switch gears a bit....

Ok, my angle has always been to sell via Best Offer, and before all the major changes I used to get plenty of offers from Buyers of which many would result in a sale. But recently I haven't received any offers at all?

So......

#1. Can any 'positive minded' people suggest why I am receiving less offers from Buyers than 6 months ago?

#2. Is it just me experiencing this, or are many private sellers also receiving less offers from Buyers?

#3. Does anyone have any 'positive' ideas on what I can do to encourage more offers from Buyers??

Positive contributions please!......

Nothing we can do will work. With 25 listings left would a high street coin dealer be a good finish to things?

Defeatist? Absolutely.

Hello, by the way (I used to be crofthousevintage on here) good to see you still posting.

What we need is a group like PayPal to step in and offer a sales portal.

I'm thinking about contacting Curve and asking them.

The main difference is both have clear business plans and aren't being "managed" by a group that managed to create an "Offer" scenario where the customer pays more than the offer.

That's Pythonesque level funny, just this lot did it by accident, the Pythons did it deliberately. This rollout almost deserves it's own Meme comic type deal.

I remember you yes!

Good to hear from you!

Thanks for your suggestion, but I really want to try and 'crack' the latest Ebay puzzle y'know?

If it's any consolation my 'views' have ground to a halt over the last week or so. I'm hoping that the folks that got locked out of Ebay may be allowed back in soon as those seem to include most of my buyers? Unless they're private sellers who've upped sticks and gone because of the proposed changes?

Hopefully it'll pick up again. If not...

That’s fair enough. I just thought if you were nearly finished with the coins it might be time to…house deposit, wasn’t it?

Re: Private Sellers Unite! We need to figure out a new sales strategy that works for us!

The problem we have is that although we know what changes will be implemented, we don't know when. And when BPF is in place we will still have to wait for SD to be forced on us. So anything we put in place now will change.

But if you want to try to sell as much as you can before the changes this is what I do....

-Free post with increased prices. Large letter is £1.55 and insured up to £20 as long as you upload tracking and get proof of postage and is easy to claim and I have never been refused a payout by RM.  That obviously will be effected by SD.

-business sellers have high fees too. Prices should not be that different. Eg i have some postcards. I might sell at £1. 80, it will go up to £2.70 but that will be the sort of price a business seller has to use. Again SD will change that.

-sell similar still works I think. I can't find my own items in a search even if i use my exact title to search with after about two months. Since we had 300 free listings i sell similar all items with no views every week or so. You can do them in bulk so it takes no time at all.

-Always use Best offer even if you only offer 25p off. People rarely use it, but it seems proactive.

-always send 5% offers to watchers. Allow counter offers, you dont have to accept

-do not allow Ebay to give you late delivery marks you don't deserve. They will remove it with POP. Poor scores will hamper everything.

- if you have an item which you think is great and no one else looks at, look at sold items to see if any have sold recently and even sometimes relist using that template. Sometimes, you realise that your item was cheaper, better condition, cheaper postage etc yet they chose the other one to buy. It can only really be that it was not seen.

-list (for me) Monday and Thursday or Friday after lunch. Occasionally you get an immediate view after posting, but (for me) things seem to take a few hours to start being seen.

-look out for offers. EBAY are putting offers on the overview page relating to promotions. I got £15 of promotions last week. No idea how the offer works yet but  i put it on a really expensive piece and it has had great views.

We can be as cross with ebay as we like, but it is still the only place to sell it all  really and we will just have to learn to adapt. I always think they like sellers to engage with the process, not just stick it on and leave it.

Well remembered! Yes, I got the deposit and moved in to a lovely flat about 8 months ago.

Selling off the rest now.
