Sellers Allege Widespread Postage Underpayment Scam Involving Packlink and eBay

We would like to raise alarms over an alleged systematic scheme involving the delivery company Packlink, with eBay being accused of enabling this practice. Many sellers claim they are being unfairly charged under the pretext of "underpaid postage," with many taking to forums and social media to share their experiences. A simple Google search for "Packlink scam" reveals the extent of this issue, with countless sellers expressing frustration and financial losses.

Many sellers are speaking out, with growing calls for an investigation. The issue has become so widespread that an online search for “Packlink scam” yields numerous complaints, blog posts, and forum discussions detailing similar experiences. These accounts paint a picture of widespread exploitation targeting small businesses that rely on eBay for their livelihood.

The Alleged Scheme

  1. Surprise Deductions by Packlink
Packlink is accused of deducting arbitrary amounts, typically £3.18, from sellers’ bank accounts weeks or months after the alleged postage occurred. These deductions are said to exploit the direct debit authorisation that sellers are required to set up when using eBay’s shipping service.
  2. Revoked Direct Debits Met with eBay Withholding Funds
Sellers who revoke Packlink’s authority to withdraw funds are faced with eBay stepping in to withhold their funds to cover the disputed charges. Sellers argue this tactic makes eBay complicit in the scheme, effectively circumventing their ability to protect their accounts from unjust charges.
  3. Unreasonable Burden of Proof
When sellers dispute the charges, Packlink reportedly demands unreasonable evidence, such as photographs of parcels and proof of the postage weight, which most sellers do not routinely retain.
  • Financial Impact: While individual charges are small, the cumulative effect is significant for sellers who already operate on slim profit margins.
  • Trust Erosion: The perception that eBay and Packlink are working in tandem against sellers has shaken trust in the platform.
  • Consumer Protection Concerns: Sellers argue that these practices may violate the Direct Debit Guarantee and consumer protection laws under the Consumer Rights Act 2015.

A Call for Accountability

The situation has sparked calls for action from both affected sellers and consumer rights advocates. They are demanding:

  1. Transparency: Clear evidence to substantiate any alleged postage underpayments.
  2. Fair Practices: A halt to the practice of withholding funds or automatic deductions without seller consent.
  3. Investigations: Independent scrutiny of Packlink’s operations and eBay’s role in facilitating the deductions.

Quotes from Affected Sellers

“This isn’t about one or two mistakes; it’s a systematic issue. Packlink charges whatever they want, and eBay just goes along with it. Sellers are left powerless,” said one seller.

“We rely on eBay to run our businesses. To feel like the platform itself is enabling this kind of exploitation is disheartening,” said another.

For Further Information

For those interested in investigating further, a simple Google search of “Packlink scam” offers a clear snapshot of the frustration faced by countless sellers.

Great, well worded post, but I wouldn't clog up Actionfraud with this - it's not their arena.

Personally, I don't use Packlink. Problem solved.

You may not use Packlink but look for deductions on your credit card bill for small amounts such as £3.18, especially if your card is linked to an eBay a/c.

Are eBay making deductions for Packlink if a seller doesn't use Packlink?

Packlink eBay Postage Underpayment Scam

Just had an email from eBay saying Packlink had unsuccessfully tried to take £3.18 for a package that was overweight. Item was 3 comics weighing about 100g. Their email says it weighed over 1 Kg! Package was delivered 12th December, over a month ago! Complete scam - can't believe this is from a so called reputable company!

It's an odd one. Under UK law, the burden of proof lies with the claimant not the defendant, so it seems wrong to me that the courier is asking the shipper for proof  to counter their claim in these cases. It'd be interesting to see how this held up in a small claims court if someone could be bothered..

Packlink eBay Postage Underpayment Scam

I’ve had one email a month after sending charging me £3.18 saying a board game weighed 1.4kg - a quick google revealed it actually weighed 800g. Still not refunded the money despite telling me they would over a week ago (as an exception!). Also said I was out of time to dispute despite responding immediately to their email.

Noticed again today another charge for something I already paid over £4 postage on and I remember checking it was in the postage limits. No email - just spotted on my account. Only happens with evri/ eBay/packlink - I’ve used InPost and evri a lot of times on Vinted and never had this problem. Compete scam!!!!

So now a refund has appeared on my account if 2.94. I know it’s only 24p short but if they are doing that to everybody (and it seems like there are a lot of us) that adds up.  What a racket.

Follow-up: Following an eBay sale, resulting in a credit to my account, the £3.18 was taken from my funds by Packlink! I am now not using the packlink scammers and just use ‘other’ as postage provider, so I can avoid them and send myself. Note that it’s actually cheaper, I’m charging £2.70 via Evri rather than £2.94 for the same ‘service’ via the Packlink thieves! AVOID PACKLINK UNLESS YOU WANT TO RISK BEING SCAMMED!

To play devils advocate did you consider the packaging?. A cd weighing 60 grams will be over 100 in a Jiffy bag but cardboard is heavy. Courier is going to count the packaged parcel not just the contents.

You mean when Simple Delivery becomes compulsory....?

Apparently, Simple Del. is *not* going to be using Packlink , thankfully.

So far, the only choices on the SD system are Evri (oh dear....) and Royal Mail.

Packlink eBay Postage Underpayment Scam

So the debacle continues. Yesterday another buyer messaged me to say they’d had something from RM to say they want £3 before delivery. I have already paid £4.85 for a medium parcel (more than the buyer paid me) but again did this through eBay so still packlink (I’ve realised now).

This is getting beyond a joke. This is £10 in fees in 2 weeks. I’ve used Vinted for years and have never had this issue. I’m sorely tempted to just pull everything off eBay and stick with Vinted.

The game was wrapped in 2 plastic bin bags (which no way weighed 600g) and I weighed the second item before I sent it and it was under 2kgs so that should have been fine too. This is made more frustrating because this is what eBay is suggesting to me. I’ve been selling online for years so am not stupid.

When you buy RM postage through eBay it's not through Packlink.

RM are much less likely to make a false claim for underpayment.

Packlink eBay Postage Underpayment Scam

There is no fee of £3 to pay from Royal Mail, that I can remember. £4,85 is correct price for standard second class medium parcel via click and drop. However there have been a lot of scam texts flying around again recently asking for a fee of this type to be paid. Perhaps in this case the recipient in this case had had one of those?

There is a link but you can't by RM postage though brokers, which is what Packlink are.  That doesn't mean you can't buy RM postage through the ebay website though.
