Hi All,
First time posting a question here so please be kind
I have just sold an item which offered the option of simple delivery, if I used this the cost for the delivery came to £5.96. However I chose not to use this as I had already stated in the listing £3.39 (RM 2nd Tracked, large envelope)
My question is how are ebay working out the charges? I assume they used a guestimate for the size package?
Also why when altering the delivery options to suit the parcel size, ebay priced at £3.39 (RM 2nd Tracked, large envelope) for drop off, yet same for collection was £4.09. RM offer free collection of the item so why is ebay charging fee to arrange this?
Thanks

If you don't allow both options on SD (RM and Evri) they will charge more for the one that you use, best to opt out and use Custom Postage. SD is all wrong it hasn't even got the 10kg medium parcel. Not all RM is collectable either, i buy direct and they collect everything even letters

I should have said Simple Delivery buyer pays Ebay and they send you a label and if you cancel that label and post the way you want you will have to pay the postage yourself. Most of us won't be able to use SD if they make it mandatory

When i use Custom Postage - does that mean I still have to use an ebay generated label? If not can I use my own stamps as I have hundreds that I got in the Royal Mail swapout scheme and stamp collectors do not want labels!

If you use custom postage you can select whichever postal service/courier you want for the listing and then buy the postage anyway you want - direct from a post office/online/ebay and I assume postage stamps up to the value needed although I've never done it this way so someone else might have more info.

Thanks that's helpful as no one here talks about stamps for sale - i don't collect anymore but have 1000's to dispose of, just inherited a load more and if you can't use stamps it's not really viable unless they buy larger quantities. The stamps I have are all legal for use and would be ideal for collectors.

Just to confirm you do not have to purchase a shipping label via eBay if you select custom postage. However, stamps can only be used as payment for Royal Mail's VAT-exempt retail services which means they can only be used for 1st Class, 2nd Class (including Signed For) and Special Delivery services.
Stamps cannot be used as payment for Tracked 24 or Tracked 48 services as these are subject to VAT. This might be a consideration given the value of the item(s) being sent vs the maximum compensation available from Royal Mail:
1st Class & 2nd Class (including Signed For): £20
Special Delivery: £750 (up to £2,500 with additional cover purchased)
Tracked 24 & Tracked 48: £150

That's good - I'm private individual and services required are only those up to special delivery. I won't sell anything that requires 24 or 48 anymore due to the BPF, I knew it was non stamps on these and used to use DPD which was better for me.
So one question is use of stamps going to disappear soon - or are we still unaware what's happening here with SD??

The BPF is only charged on the item price. If postage is charged separately the postage element does not attract the BPF:
Item: £3.99
Postage: Free (i.e. included in item price)
BPF: 88p
Price shown to buyer: £4.87 with free postage
Item: £2.44
Postage: £1.55
BPF: 82p
Price shown to buyer: £3.26 + £1.55 postage

I have just seen the Simple Delivery as an option on a draft for the first time. £ 2.70 for a letter size envelope! And £2.70 for a 750g Large letter, but no option for less than 100g LL. In fact nowhere to put the weight in at all. I'm shell shocked to be honest. I have used Vted and I am amazed at what people will pay for postage, but buyers and sellers alike will have a hard time changing over and accepting this. Lets hope they have work to do before forcing it on us, otherwise it really might be a step to far.

Shocking isn't it. Large letter will go up to 1kg in April with the new prices on RM online website which i use , i use 2nd class for a letter and £1.55 for large usually for my postcards and small items. Very rarely has anything gone astray. I'm more worried about not being able to combine postage 10 items will be 10 postages and 10 75p. They have disabled invoicing so at present i am refunding postage but no chance of that if the buyer pays Ebay direct for postage. The only way that makes sense is to sell in lots which i am now doing but most people want single postcards or to make their own sets up

I think refunding postage is the right thing to do. I feel bad when I send something on Vted knowing that they could have paid about a pound less for postage, but people don't seem to care. Perhaps my shock at the prices is just because I am not someone who throws money away. Or perhaps the fuss caused by BPF will pale into insignificance to this. I generally offer free post but I won't be able to cover these costs easily.

I usually use custom postage and send items RM tracked. However, if I sell an item of around £5 or less, I will dig into my extensive hoard of postage stamps (old presentation packs), and use those to send the parcels out (untracked), risky I know, but it is slowly whittling away at the stamps whilst they are still usable.

Yes all commemorative stamps are useable at the moment - difficult for them to stop that. But as I've said here before several times - why would a stamp collector want a Label - Obey must be dim!!!
