I deleted my original post because I think I got the maths wrong!

Re: Good news for private sellers! Reduction in fixed part of BPF and quicker payments from August!

How?

If something is say £100. Fees now are...

Fixed fee of £0.10
7% of £20 = £1.40
4% of £80 (£100 less £20) = £3.20
£4.70

Previously would have been

Fixed fee of £0.75
4% of £100 = £4.00
£4.75

I will only be like that if they change SD to optional!

As a private buyer and seller I was just worn down by ebay's general unattractiveness and with no forward schedule of concessions or improvements there didn't seem much point repeatedly telling them the same obvious things that were wrong with their business. I wonder if anyone got fired, side-lined or redeployed to ebay siberia on how badly this had gone wrong?

It was fine for me because their stupidity caused me to signed up elsewhere to buy and sell and was mostly just running down the stuff I had listed here and only listing new stuff that I couldn't sell on that platform as a last resort choice.

To be fair to ebay their badly named buyer fee is now more attractive than that other place for many of my items which is what I think ebay were trying to achieve when they took away the fees from clothing and eventually all private sales in previous years. They didn't need to take the fees all the way to zero - just to be competitive.

Still a lot of stuff they need to fix but maybe they have done enough for me to do more selling here let's see what happens on the 6th when they violate my existing listings and how many can still have a suitable weight large letter option. I might try updating my listings to SD in advance of that violation to see what options I am offered for those categories.

It would be good if they could give a preview of what they are working on next time. It should never be a problem because it should always be positive if they have really learnt to appreciate their otherwise fleeing users...

Good news....or a panicked climbdown?

Seems to me Ebay tried rolling out a new, highly visible money-scalping scheme - watched with horror as sellers left and buyers stopped buying - then after realising their net income was in freefall, decided to roll it back.

There's no apology though. It's just pitched as a change which proves they are "listening" to sellers and buyers - even though we know they're only reacting to a fall in income.

Yet this will come too late for sellers who've already left and for buyers who've stopped buying.

I personally think it's been a terrible mistake by Ebay.

My maths! Need Coffee! 😊

Still - items over £25 the difference is 5p hardly going to encourage me want to spend.

It's only good news for the lower priced items & seemingly they were rare in my purchases.

But it might encourage buyers to buy more than one item from you as they will save 75p on each addiitonal item.

Luckily I don't sell here since they ousted the buffer of PayPal.

My buying is waaay down too, I don't see me changing that any time soon either.

I'm not giving ebay any credit whatsoever.

They've fiddled & fiddled,no doubt driving away many many sellers AND buyers.

Now we're supposed to be grateful because they've pulled their heads out of their back sides and realised that they've messed up big time.

The place is run by clowns.

For a £25 item under the new eBay UK Buyer Protection fee structure:
- Flat fee: £0.10
- 7% of the item price up to £20 = 7% of £20 = £1.40
- 4% of the portion from £20 to £25 = 4% of £5 = £0.20

Total fee = £0.10 + £1.40 + £0.20 = £1.70

The buyer would pay £25 + £1.70 = £26.70.

Under the old structure (4% + £0.75):
- 4% of £25 = £1.00
- Plus £0.75 = £1.75

Total fee = £1.75
Buyer would pay £25 + £1.75 = £26.75.

The new fee (£1.70) is slightly better value than the old fee (£1.75), saving the buyer £0.05.

The second calc is wrong you add the fixed fee first so add 3p to your £1.75 so it's + 75p +4 % making it £26.78

What is going on with this selling platform? Things are made unnecessarily more convoluted and complicated. Selling was far simpler a while back. Simple Delivery and Buyer's Protection Fee are mere fee rackets to extract more money out of everyone. Seriously, I see the need for a rival platform that doesn't consistently change the rules by dictating what we can and cannot do.

The old BPF was 4% + 72p. Well, it was actually (3.33333% + 60p) + VAT but close enough.

For items over £20.00 there is now essentially a fixed fee of £1.50 plus 4% of the amount over £20.00. That means for items over £20.00 the buyer will typically pay 2p less under the new BPF calculator.

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Even with round-off error due to VAT I get £1.70 whether I add the VAT to each element separately or after adding the net values then applying VAT.

I'm wondering if eBay have forgotten to add the VAT element to the net portion of the fixed fee; i.e. they are charging 8p instead of 10p. They seemingly made a mistake with the previous fixed fee element which ended up being 72p instead of 75p (i.e. 4% less).

Give me ambiguity or give me something else.

Okay, thanks for clarifying that.  That is interesting as it should be £1.70 so must be to do with roundings.  From my calculations It would seem that eBay is rounding down when calculating the 2 variable elements instead of up and thereby losing a penny in each instance.
