Does Simple Delivery assume that all private sellers have a printer?

When simple delivery is made mandatory for private sellers will the process be as follows:

* Purchasing buyer chooses the postage option they want i.e. Royal Mail or EVRI

* Buyer completes checkout, buying the postage from ebay

* Ebay sends the postage label to the private seller

What if a private seller does not have a printer to print the label that ebay sends them?

Does Simple Delivery assume that all private sellers have a printer?

I have been sent QR codes by ebay in the past to use on items that I have had to return and several times they have been rejected at my Post Office! We both had no idea why? Luckily I have a very good relationship with my local Postmistress and she then allowed me to send the label to her via an email so she could print it out as I don't have a printer. So if I decide to continue selling when SD is mandatory I will have to purchase a printer (I will not be relying on QR codes again) and then purchase labels from ebay, (cutting out the middleman - my very helpful Postmistress) but still expect her to take all my parcels, cluttering up her very small Post Office (along with many others). It's the only Post Office within several miles now as all the others have been sold off. I want to continue supporting it by purchasing my labels from them. They always have a queue of people with their online parcels every day. I also purchase other items in there too. This PO is a lifeline for the elderly people who live in the village. Also why has ebay announced this change without giving any proper details? It's a huge change and people need time to prepare for it (or not). Surely they owe their loyal customers that much at least?

No qualifications but in the past I've had to read into various areas of law for positions I've held and in 2 languages at some points. I was good enough to find break points in contracts.

In regards to this, so I don't fall foul of eBay board rules, my instincts are being triggered by their posts, by some of yours too in truth.

Out of curiosity. Would any of you be interested in helping me with a thread to collect official eBay announcements regarding the BPF and Simple Delivery aspects of the new update? & no, it's not all in their forum area. They are spreading information in different areas.

If we can get everything in one place maybe we get to see the big picture (more) clearly.

I'm fairly certain there are grounds for challenges we could make to organizations like the FCA but it would be easier to know if everything was in one area.

BFP makes me think of the ""Geek" Carphone Warehouse" case and the older "Dixons Group Extended Warranty" case. eBay are technically selling something that is already provided by law for free. & as I doubt any of us are paying cash for our eBay purchases, most of us probably have financial protection directly with our cards/PayPal accounts etc & as they almost certainly know that it falls under the same umbrella.

Simple Delivery looks like it could definitely adversely affect the disabled and any others with mobility issues.

& I honestly think there may be more than that.

Your thoughts?

Does Simple Delivery assume that all private sellers have a printer?

Thanks, it's kind of the opposite for me, I was planning on devoting a significant chunk of my time trying to declutter and list. All my 'standard' items (e.g mainstream release DVDs) will eventually go to the charity shop, be sold as job lots, or be sold to the likes of CEX or Music Magpie (for pennies), but I have lots of rare collectable CDs, vinyl, DVDs, VHS tapes (including many collectable pre-cert tapes), blu rays, books, comics, magazines, 8-bit hardware and software (mostly ZX Spectrum stuff), 16/32-bit consoles and software, and goodness knows how much other random paraphernalia. Anyone into those areas of collecting would have an absolute field day if they came into my home, but for me, the sheer amount of 'stuff' has long been a source of anxiety, as I know that it would take me several lifetimes to read, listen to and watch it all - and that's just the items in own collection, let alone the time it would take to list and sell the ones I'm happy (to varying degrees) to sell on.

I suffer from severe procrastination in some areas of life, and put off listing my first item for about two decades (yep, you read that right) from the time I first got online around the turn of the millenium, discovered eBay, and resolved to use the site. Along with (but connected to) the procrastination was my anxiety about being scammed or making an error with my initial listings, getting negative feedback and starting my eBay selling 'journey' (everything's apparently a journey nowadays) on the wrong foot. Meanwhile I kept buying and buying, and not only from eBay.

A few years ago, I finally grabbed the bull by the horns and took the plunge (to mix metaphors in a slightly dodgy fashion - I assure you that I have no se**al attraction to bovine species!). I was doing pretty well too, largely because I priced items reasonably and took a lot of care with each listing (highlighting even the most minor imperfections, knowing how finnicky I myself am about the condition of physical media), communicating with the buyer, etc. Getting a sale (and better still, glowing feedback) was a real serotonin hit. Then life circumstances, inluding two moves in the space of six months, got in the way.

Fast forward to now, and I'm in a position to list again, but now it's not my procrastination holding me back, it's the ending of cash on collection and the introduction of the BPF and Simple Delivery that are holding me back. Though not ideal, I can live with payment holds. I could probably even handle the BPF, but the end of CoC is a problem for me, and - as others have expressed - SD will be the real killer. I have a Post Office just a few minutes' walk away, but Evri etc. would require a bus into town, not to mention the fact that I have around £200 worth of First Class and First Class Large stamps (which I got as 'payment' for doing Kantar TNS postal surveys many years ago - I later exchanged them for barcoded stamps under the Stamp Swap scheme) that I was planning to use up (for certain sales) before switching fully to tracked services (RM48 Tracked being particularly good value, relatively speaking). SD, if it does become mandatory (I'm aware of the CEO's statement, and there are no indications at this point that eBay are going to backtrack) will leave me lumbered with them. Apart from eBay, I hardly ever use stamps now, just the odd birthday or Christmas card, so all that running around doing the postal surveys (they called it that, but it wasn't a written survey as the name suggests) has turned out to be largely a waste of time. I'm in a minority, but I know from these boards that some other sellers have got stamps like mine (which keep their value with RM increases) which they want(ed) to use on eBay packages.

Anyway, sorry for the digression, but there's my eBay life story in a nutshell, and as you can see, it's not entirely unrelated to the thread topic (okay, strictly speaking the subject is whether a printer is required for SD, but I don't think the OP minds that the discussion has broadened somewhat).

And yes, "eBay is a complete..." is a concise summary of how I'm feeling right now. I'm rather shocked at how quickly I've gone from being an eBay lover (with a few things that "we need to talk about") to an apparent hater. The obvious response (oft-repeated on these boards) is "Well, use a different site then", but I don't adapt quickly to change, and have already invested a significant amount of time in learning the ropes here, so am reluctant to, and nervous about, having to start all over again with a different system (although, to be fair, even eBay's system is a very different beast to what it was just a couple of years ago).

Off-topic, but the app update has also royally, er, upset me. I have Android 9, and cannot update to 10. I've deleted the now unusable app, but am already missing the useful notifications (the app was generally rubbish, but the notifications were a positive feature). Anyway, plenty of other threads where I can vent my sleen about that...

Tbh, it's a good idea but the announcements from Ebay are so woolly (e.g. 'generally'/'typically') and mis-directed if not disreputable (e.g. 'Buyer fees start on 4th February') it'll be a major job making head or tail of them even when compiled in one place. I get the impression things really are made up on the hoof a lot of the time.

When is a roll-out not a roll-out? When it's a complete and utter shambles.

That was an excellent post, thank you for sharing. But at the same time, damn you 😝 all that honey trap talk about rare blu rays etc. I have alot of Warhammer models, probably more than most high street specialist shops in truth, but my dvd/blu ray/UHD collection dwarfs that.

I never watch TV, I just choose from my own collection.

So to get back on track, damn your honey traps😜 I'll have to bookmark your feed now to see if you have any import blu ray I'm after.

Words are important and generally many "official" statements are designed to obscure.

generally, typically, could,  may, possibly, most  and more - they are designed to give the " writer" an " out" of their true meaning should they require.

Thank you, very kind of you to say that. I certainly don't feel like being polite - I'm very anxious and stressed about all of these issues - but the problem with ranting and raving is that, while it feels good in the moment to let it all out in one unfiltered flow, it doesn't really help your argument, and is sometimes counter-effective. I appreciate, though, that there are times and situations in life where a good rant is an entirely justified, understandable, and even appropriate, response.

Plus, at the back of my mind there's a dim hope that, if eBay are monitoring these boards to gauge 'user sentiment', they will pay closer to attention to the more measured posts. They'd probably dismiss the more shouty ones out of hand (not that they should - such posts may be equally valid in terms of the points being made). "Oh, look, the peasants are revolting again!".

I think its an American thing. My husband is American and uses ‘typically’, ‘generally’ and ‘almost’ a lot when he’s trying to obfuscate and excuse. I see you ebay!

No, it's other posters that are assuming that.

Currently (which is all we have to go on at the moment) eBay say they decided the courier used by the seller's (and buyer's?) location.
If a seller lives in a remote area with only a Post Office in a ten mile radius (no Evri shops), I would imagine that both Standard and Express options will be via RM.
On the other hand if someone lives in the flat above the Evri drop off shop, with the nearest PO being 5 miles away, I would imagine that Standard and Express will both be with Evri.

What they will do when the seller who lives above the Evri shop has a buyer who lives in one of Evri's remote areas (so RM would be the better option) is anyone's guess!

Sorry in case it wasn't clear, my previous post was for you?

& as you already got my interest in your blu rays do you happen to have either the FRE or GER import of the 13th Warrior? Mine is scratched and jumps. Most annoying.

& yes, I agree with what you say about the shouty posts. I also noticed how virtually every thread I've been on contains at least 1 business seller vs private seller argument. A cynic might think that it's a thoroughly useful distraction.

Does Simple Delivery assume that all private sellers have a printer?

Ah, Sir/Madam, you flatter me! Not that I'm trying to 'outdo' anybody, especially a more experienced member like them. However, it's good to know that the ages I spend typing and tweaking into the early hours isn't a complete waste of time. I enjoy making my sporadic (but often off-puttingly long) posts, reading others' thoughts and opinions even more so. I feel no trace of a connection with the impersonal behemoth that is eBay, but reading and posting here does at least make me feel like I'm a small part of this community.

At some point when I have more time, I intend to start a new thread on the issue of private sellers having 'new' items to sell. It seems to be quite a divisive issue, yet strangely one that hasn't generated much discussion (I guess we're all too focussed on the other, more pressing, matters at the moment). Using DVDs & blu rays as an example, I'd like to point out various scenarios in which a private seller may have 'new' and sealed items for sale, but still items not purchased with the express intention of reselling. So, if that piques anyone's interest, watch this space!

Thanks again for the kind words.

Thanks, you make some very good points there. I'm sure that, as you say, the Post Office in a quiet village (often in a small shop, maybe a community one) is not always the sleepy affair I made it out to be. I was just trying to point out the unworkability of the system I was talking about, but because it would be so unworkable, I kind of thought it through to my own conclusion that eBay would consider it a non-starter, in which case my argument is moot anyway.

You're right, though, and I probably did rely too much on old stereotypes in my example.

Excellent post irt303  (No. 134)  Read it all the way through and didn't send me to sleep either.  The hypothetical conversation you have written between myself and eBay is most probably the way it's going to be sadly.  But thank you for the great response to my question.

Yup, even in this super-fast digital age, it can take years for records to be updated and for those changes to be reflected on t'interweb.

When I did the postal surveys, Kantar TNS were insisting that there was a Post Office (or postbox, can't remember which) in a particular location. There had been, but it had closed (or been removed, if a postbox) some time previous. You'd think that an organisation tasked with measuring Royal Mail's performance would have been up to speed with that, but I had to send photos to prove it.

Also, I used to live at an address that, for some inscrutable reason*, Royal Mail had deleted from their database. This caused all manner of problems for me when, for example, trying to set up a broadband or energy account - many organisations had no entry for the address in their system (at best, they had my address in a different format to the local authority's designated 'official format', e.g. '24a Sesame Street' instead of the correct 'Flat 1, 24 Sesame Street' - sounds trivial, but that itself was problematic). I tried my hardest to get RM's address database maintenance team to remedy the issue, but when I moved out over ten years later, the issue had still only been partially resolved. Even if RM had fully resolved the issue on their database, it would still have potentially taken years for the change to filter down to other organisations, most of which (I was told) only import refreshed data from RM's master database every few years or so.

* Actually, RM did give me a reason; they told me that somebody had informed them that there was no longer such an address (???) and so they removed it from the database. What is inscrutable is the fact that RM apparently took this entirely on trust, without verifying it for themselves. I was in one of two flats above a shop, and for many years, even before I was living there, all three properties had been entirely separate for official purposes (rent, utility bills, council tax - business rates in the shop's case, mail, etc.). The crux of the issue was that both flats were 'serviced' by one letterbox, so RM 'merged' both flats into one as they considered it to be a single delivery point (which, technically, it was). Their own system didn't appear to be configured to allow for a single delivery point for two or more properties and to have the separate properties individually included on the database! It was even more complicated than that (the database also had a single entry for both flats in the format 'Flat 1 - 2, 24 Sesame Street'), but I've veered way off-topic again, sorry!

I think you're right. There are so many issues around the roll out of SD it seems likely that Ebay hasn't a clue how it'll work in much detail. Whereas BPFs are here and even then Ebay isn't saying which other categories they'll be rolled out to and when.

The SD is so vague it's probably a bit early days to be challenging it. Who knows, if we ALL just keep our fingers crossed maybe it won't happen? I wish.

@irt303  Yes, I did that thing you did with the buying stamps, especially before each price hike. I had enough to last 3 or 4 years, or so I thought. Q: When is a good investment no longer a good investment? A: When the world changes.

By the way, you do know that you can edit your own posts, don't you? Although I believe that you can only do so within a short time, then the post cannot be changed (except by a mod) - maybe that's what happened in your case. Happy to be corrected about the edit time limit.

@eastern-lights @andha-21 @a45heaven

For all those doubters - mockers and ill informed  - this is ebay's take on sellers wanting to use their own postal choice rather than an SD label

You will lose the additional cover if you use your own label

Simple Delivery / ebay

'At checkout your buyer is charged for the delivery cost and the amount is then paid to eBay for the label. If you decide not to use the prepaid label, you'll need to purchase your own label instead at your own cost.'

'If you decide not to use your Simple Delivery label, you don't need to void the unused label.'
