Collection 6-Digit Confirmation Code?

Just had a sale where the item is too big and fragile to send via courier, so had set listing to collection only, the buyer has been and gone, so I was left to mark the order as collected, but up popped a message I haven't seen before, asking me to "Enter the buyer's 6-digit code, located in their confirmation email".... wut?

When did they introduce this feature? My previous Collection Only sale didn't ask me for this, I haven't seen any announcements, the only recent one I see is about changes to payments for collection only items, but nothing about a new collection code.... it'd be great to know about these things before hand!

The collection code has been around for a few years now, but now, because eBay no longer allow cash on collection, it's vital to add that code to prove that the buyer has been to collect their item.

Message your buyer and ask them for the code, they should have received it via email.

It's a recent change.   The buyer receives the code in an email so send them a message and ask for it.   See "Proof of collection" on here:

Thanks for the info guys! Like I said, I had never been asked to input a code before, so this was very out of the blue for me! Once again eBay making things harder than they need to be!

I've just checked, the collection codes came into being in July 2020.

It's necessary now because cash on collection is no longer allowed by eBay, hence the code request to prove that the buyer has collected.. This is a recent thing (October 1st, I think).

And what if the buyer turns up and doesn't have the collection code?

Most local collect buyers I've had didn't have the code and were unaware of its importance.  Ebay have handled this appallingly.  No surprise there, I guess.

The collection code has been around for a good while now, and during that time sellers have been handing over items to buyers who have paid via eBay checkout. Surely, as a seller, you'd be asking yourself what's to prevent a buyer collecting and then claiming item not received?

Now that cash on collection isn't allowed, as a seller I'd be adding an extra line of description stating something like 'After you've paid. eBay will send you a 6 digit collection code. Please bring this with you when you come to collect your item, I'm unable to hand the item over without out'.

Thanks.  First, I'm sure it's no surprise to you to say that there's a significant number of buyers who don't even read the fine description.

Asking myself that?  No, generally it's a pretty cheap item and nobody in their right mind would run a scam to get my kind of stuff for free, I reckon.  Though I admit there are people who seemingly aren't in their right mind.

Anyhow, I guess I must include the need for the 6 digit number in the instructions I send for the buyer to locate me.

I confess to being a complete Luddite on this-My buyer has paid ebay  ( so they're already earning interest) and collected the item without the 6 figure code or QR Code. The amount pending is showing below my account balance on the payments page. Under these circumstances, how long before the amount is added to my Ebay balance ?

The buyer ( who was perfectly trustworthy etc) had no idea about the codes. At least I'll get paid sometime !
I do think that there should be an alternative method of confirming a collection to cover this  happening.
