One Week Ends Another Begins
As those of you who have read the previous diary entries will be aware last week was pretty traumatic on the Deno front. To summarise it started with the vet’s visit to give Deno a health check which resulted in the decision not to take the risk of introducing Ellie and Ruby at the moment. This has meant quite a rethink on how we manage the land regarding grazing.
The following day we had the experience of Deno suffering from “choke” which meant an emergency call out to the vet and an all night vigil to make sure he didn’t suffer any ill-effects from the injection he had been given to relax the muscles in the throat and the antibiotics administered to reduce the risk of pneumonia.
A lot of time this week has been spent creating small paddock areas in the field next to the orchard which together with the strip of land fronting the orchard will make up the majority of their winter grazing this year. Cuddles and Deno have enjoyed their part in making this a viable option as we have let them into each of the mini-paddocks as they were fenced. They have quite happily enjoyed the arduous labour of eating all the long grass so that we can more easily remove any patches of dock or nettles.
Much of the rest of the week was spent in relative normalcy – morning feeds of karrit sandwiches, afternoon checks, sarcoids dressing and mucking out, (oh the ecstasy of horse management), and the best visit of the day – the evening treat of karrit sandwiches, fun with the dogs and relaxing in the evening sun
Of course if you’ve left the morning feed a little late because you overslept on a Saturday morning and can’t give the evening dose of antibiotics until 12 hours later then there isn’t a lot of evening sun left!
Playing ball with the dogs is none to easy either!
Mind you we did see our first glow worm of the year and just had to share this with you all - :^O
The week ended with lots of effort going into preparing the Girl Guides float for the Redhill Carnival and the new week started on Sunday with the actual parade – I know this is Deno’s diary but hope you don’t mind me posting the following pictures in which I, dressed as the Mad Hatter, am driving the tractor pulling the float through Redhill town centre.
I’m sorry this has only been a quick summary of what really has been a hectic week, Deno’s knack of causing the maximum amount of worry with the least effort possible timed to coincide with one of my busiest weekends of the year has left little time for a daily update!
Don’t forget to check out all the Big Boy’s pictures
