Hi everybody.I recently purchsed The Beatles In Mono CD Box Set on ebay for £100 new and i'm in doubt as to whether this is genuine or counterfeit. The Please Please Me cd plays through but skips on three tracks. On the Revolver cd the first track "Taxman" has John Lennon counting in the intro which i've never heard before.I have a couple of compilation cd's with Taxman on and theres no intro like that. Also Beatles For Sale has the flip-backs to the cover stuck to the inside of the gatefold cover (shouldn't they be on the outside to the rear of the cover).None of the discs has the manufacturers code on them but does have all the relevant matrix numbers, bar codes,IFPI codes. Can anybody help.

No, that's it - a RM Tracked 48 is fine - check for the eBay logo on the label.
A genuine new CD box will cost several hundreds, a used can be found for a couple of hundred.
Do investigate the one I mentioned on Discogs website... you may catch lucky!

You would need to do your own research on the item but if the item is not as it should be then open a NOt as described dispute by going to the item in your Purchase history or ebay help at the top of the page.
The seller sends a pre paid label for the return and should refund you when they receive it back
If they dont the you go back to the dispute after 4 days and escalate to ebay and they will refund you
That option only appears when it is time.

Yes i do know what you're saying and i've done some research but it's all very confusing.I just need to know if anybody here has anymore information than i already have that might help me determine whether the item is genuine or not.

There are 2 very obvious factors in determining some of the fake box sets so far -
1. The individual albums are without the plastic sleeves
2. The apple logo which should be bright green with yellow highlights has dark speckles and streaks
Whether or not your set feels to you like a fake it should not have discs which skip, unless that was specifically stated within the description - make a claim as soon as possible.

Following up on your specifics regarding BFS - the fakes have the folds inside like yours, sorry to say.
Plus the "mono" is missing on the back cover.
George does the count-in on "Taxman" btw.
You will find an unboxing of a fake set on Youtube which goes through each disc separately, hosted by Beatle Dustino.

I thought as much but thanks for the info greatly appreciated.I did inform ebay that i thought it may be a fake set but all they said was that they didn't find anything wrong with the listing and they are still for sale by sellers: donmorg_2 and fncanfn so anyone looking to buy one of these box sets beware.

Sorry to say all the info you supplied matches exactly so i've definitely bought a PUP.

You will need to edit out the names of those sellers before an admin does - no naming and shaming is permissable.
Incidentally, did your box have the booklet... some do not.
If you go to discogs there is a Like New set for £21 but ask the seller before Purchasing for a picture of his box where the apple will reveal true or fake.

Yes it does have the booklet.I must say it is a pretty good copy though.
How do i edit names out.

OK, so a refund it is.
Request a return citing Item Not As Described and say "disc skips" - that is all that is needed to get your refund.
The seller must send a prepaid tracked return label/QR code if they want the item back.
EDIT: there's a time limit on editing, using the drop down from the top right arrow symbol.

Yes i've already done that thinking it was fake anyway and i got a private return address label that had nothing to do with the seller in question.....Really strange.

Do not use any label unless it is issued through your ebay account - it will be a Royal mail Tracked 48.
If it has a different address to the sellers details then check with eBay CS first.

The seller says in their listing that the item is shipped from the UK when in fact it comes from China so surely ebay should take action regarding that.

Must be to late as theres no edit feature in the drop down.Just have to wait till they edit it themselves.
04-01-2025 8:32 PM
Yes it's correct the label is issued through my ebay account and is Royal Mail 48hr so i will have to check with CS.

Thank so much for the info it's greatly appreciated and i will now know what to look out for when buying these cd box sets on ebay. The onlt reason i chose cd's was for the cheapness as most of by Beatles collection in in vinyl and the vinyl box sets are way out of my reach in price.👍👍👍👍👍

It was my pleasure 😉
I don't know if it's your thing but owing to the £1600+ price tag on the vinyl box it has become fairly easy to source lossless rips/needledrops through peer-to-peer file sharing sites - ever heard of "PBTHAL" ? - and the vinyls did have a slightly better mastering than the CD set.
You can find nice rips of the original UK monos too if you want to do comparisons.
Do not buy the new US Capitol mono box despite lower cost... too harsh and bright.
Good luck in your search and have a great weekend.
Regards, Ed.
