I have been buying & selling on eBay for over 15 years, & have watched whilst little by little eBay tweek elements which have worked perfectly, but this new little trick up the sleeve of eBay when bidding, takes the biscuit.
You find an item you want to bid on, you cancel everything in your day to make sure that you will be home, finger poised over the bidding button, & where I (for example) bid 4-5 seconds before the end of auction, this has been my chosen method for 15 years.
I first saw what I thought was a glitch a couple of weeks back, & where, over the course of 2 weeks, I had been outbid by other snipers, this AFTER I thought I had won the item, for, the seconds clock was timing down, 4 seconds before end of auction I place the winning bid, THEN the clock having almost hit 0 switches back & adds a new 5 or 6 seconds which count down again. I watched as my winning bid was then sniped & over the last 2 weeks lost all 3 items.
This has just happened a scant minute or two back on a fabulous item I had been watching for over a week. With 4 seconds to go I place what should have been the winning bid, then out of the blue more seconds were added to the clock, thank be to all the Gods, on this occasion I had added a far larger figure to my maximum bid, & did manage to win the item but at TWICE I repeat TWICE my original winning bid. Clearly, eBay are allowing watchers/winning bidders to think they have one clock which is slightly ahead of the actual end of auction, & allowing other bidders the chance to up the bid.
Yes, I am now regularly appalled by eBay's shenanigans, but this takes the biscuit, if there was an official body to whom I could report this I would..
Solved! Go to Solution.

i agree ! ebay used to be so much more transparent you could actually see who was bidding and what they had bid on before / plus check their feedback. in its efforts to scrape in more profit the integrity of the site is really compromised with bidders identities hidden

True - ebay money grabbing, not giving deals to customers. It's kept secret, not open information - 'False' finish time.

I literally just lost out on an item I would've legitimately won - after watching it for a whole WEEK no less(!) - all because the clock blatantly lied about the actual time remaining...
Thing is, if this is truly somehow intentional, it's ultimately completely self-defeating - my winning bid would've netted more profit for both the seller, and, by proxy, ebay themselves... yet, someone was able to nab the item for considerably less, all because the clock was completely inaccurate... yeah, way to shoot yourselves in the foot there! 😑

Just went & confirmed it on another auction I was watching - the countdown timer is completely out of wack!
I was refreshing the page repeatedly & the time supposedly left was jumping all over the place, even after I tried making sure my own clock was sychronized - by my best guesstimate, the times are at least 10-15 seconds out alignment between the ACTUAL time vs what is shown... meaning, if you're hoping to bid at the last moment, you're basically outta luck!
This is either a REALLY bad glitch, one which needs to get sorted... or, more likely, they're just straight-up LYING to their potential customers... either way, it's downright scummy. 😑

Why am I not even remotely surprised... 😑
Also, just on the off-chance he sees this, just a little message to "adrian"-
Please kindly stop editing my comments behind my back - if you cowards don't like the 'nickname' I gave you, perhaps you should stop behaving in such a disingenious & dishonest manner as to warrant such an unflattering (albeit accurate!) moniker - just some food for thought. 🤔

I now know what the "E" in ebay now stands for. It's ELASTIC for the countdown clock time sequence!

I haven't bid for ages but tried today. I tried to place the bid five minutes before it was due to end. eBay would not let me bid even though I could see the minutes counting down to the end. This is hugely disappointing as I really wanted the item. Why do they keep messing with ebay??

This has happened to both me and my husband on different computers, he has his own ebay account and I have mine and we have both found the same thing happening.

Ebay looking to resolve - apparently!
After losing out on bid due to this issue & being v frustrated - contacted customer services who said:
"Please know that this is an known Technical Issue on site where we have already received few complaints from other buyers who had similar issue with placing bids on their desired Auctions.
As this is known technical issue on site the technical team has already started to work on it. We have added your account details to them for resolving your technical issue faster. We have added the note to resolve it on Priority."
Hopefully something may be done soon to resolve this. Who knows!

This is still a mega problem. I have missed out on a bid yesterday and today (2pm on 27th Aug 2024). I put a bid in 25 secs before the time limit and it comes straight back as me with 'this bidding has ended.' PLEASE SORT THIS OUT PRONTO.

ebay don't care, even Mentors don't respond to this topic ( which was first raised 10-09-2022 6:34 PM).
Since then ebay have selected many more important fantasies , like Photo Feedback, to deploy the design experts onto dimproving.
All i do to my buyers who raise concerns , in the absence of a sensible solution, is to explain the problem is of ebay's making , and let them try to have a conversation with CS, and let them enjoy that experience.

If your computer's clock is not synchronized, the only one who can sort it out is you.
Go here:
At the top will be an indication if your computer's time is ahead or behind, and by how much. If it is ahead or behind by more than a second or two, go to your computer's "Adjust Date & Time" settings and make sure that the "set time automatically" option is set.

very good solution - and can you please relay that instruction to each and every member on ebay who just may want to bid on an item the seller is offering for auction - it could take some time id suspect.

A solution eburtonlab gave on page 3 of this thread. It was a load of rubbish then and, by the sound of all the previous posts since, not a solution at all.
My solution is not to take part in auctions, but to go for buy it now or accept offers. If you must do auctions, bid your max as soon as you can and see if you win.

ebay have messed up BIN, whereby you can not combine packages with multiple buys as the check out mal functions-
when this place was better, one used to win an auction and compliment the win with additional BIN to save on postage costs (win for seller, win for buyer)- that wonderful situation is sadly long gone by being 'Improved' and of course not functioning now.

Yep just happened to me....on the clock I was winning 0 seconds left and then the clock went back 8 seconds and someone outbid me...what is that all about?

The timer on your pc webpage and the timer at ebay website are out of synch.
Its that way to save internet bandwidth for ebay.
