Knives???

Just reading and watching the news about all these stabbings made me wonder where all the knives used in those offences come from? Are they all "kitchen knives" or "steak knives"?? Ebay is full of them!

Carrying a "knife" is an offence isn't it? However, what constitutes a "knife" as an offensive weapon? Didn't it used to be a knife with a blade more than four inches long?

For years I've carried a "pocket knife", like a pen-knife with a folding blade less than two and a half inches long that doesn't "lock" but I suppose that could be construed as an "offensive weapon" if used "offensively"? My current one is one made by Victorinox (Makers of the famous "Swiss Army Knife") I think it was called "waiter" because as well as the long blade, it has a bottle opener and corkscrew (plus toothpick and tweezers)!

Other than knives as mentioned surely any other type is "offensive" and shouldn't be available on sale? The so-called "hunting knife" surely has no other use than an offensive intent as really, how many people actually "go hunting"?

Over to you folks for comments?

Re: Knives???

And you’re perfectly entitled to that view.

In most discussions I can respect the other sides beliefs whilst disagreeing with them.  When it comes to killing other men or women in cold blood, that I cannot respect - sorry.

Re: Knives???

astro, if we are talking implements capable of stabbing someone to their severe injury or even death, would not a joiner going about his business and carrying a toolbox to a job with say screwdrivers be of more danger than me with a folding pocket knife with a 6.5 cm long blade ?

There are many more implements carried around for work purposes that could be construed as a lethal weapon than a simple short bladed folding pocket knife so where would we stop.

Re: Knives???

I don't know D castle... it just seems that it's knives at present that are being used to stab and murder other people. We are not seeing many joiners killing people with screwdrivers are we?

Re: Knives???

In the past few months in this area there have been two severe injuries and one near death caused by stabbings with screwdrivers, nothing at all with knives.

Re: Knives???

If we wish to go down the road of 'an eye for and eye etc....' then we may well find that society is populated by the blind.

The answer lies in educating children.

As parents we are responsible to teach our children Faith, Discipline and Respect.  The schools do the rest.

As a society we have singularily failed to do so and now we are reaping the 'rewards'.

Re: Knives???

I think it runs deeper than conscious thought, which can be influenced by education.  We need to look further back.  Young males are primed by evolution to hunt in packs and kill their “prey”.  That is a deep-seated drive.  If you want to make it a less deadly drive, you need to ensure deadly weapons are not on hand.  Then there is the alcohol/drug issue.  A young brain copes less well when its brakes are disengaged by substances than alter inhibition.  And then there is the brain-adling caused by religious indoctrination.  A brain doesn’t work optimally when it has been hijacked by fundamentalism of any sort.

So ... there are quite a few issues involved, which is why it is such a hard nut to crack.

Re: Knives???

The thing is... way back you never got that pack mentality, at least away from huge conglomerations, now it seems to be everywhere. There's a distinct lack of discipline and dare I say respect for anything or anyone.

Re: Knives???

But you also did not have groups of teens/young men with time on their hands and access to brain modifiers and weapons 24/7.   If you had done a 15 hr shift down a mine, you did not have the energy for fighting.  We have created, albeit, unwittingly, ideal conditions for aggressive group mentality to thrive.

Re: Knives???

Really? - no pack mentality.

Youngsters of the so-called Love Generation were almost TWICE as likely to prowl our streets armed with a knife.

The number of girls carrying a deadly blade in 1968 was DOUBLE the level of today.

And the proportion of kids who are beaten up or the victims of terrifying sex attacks has plummeted by HALF in the past four decades.

Re: Knives???

Google is a wonderful tool but you have to be careful what you turn up.

A newspaper report of ten years ago which mentions a "survey" of only 1000 youngsters by another newspaper with an axed to grind needs some careful appraisal in the light of the incidents of the present day?

Re: Knives???

I remember the 60s well - all my teen years were in that period.

You had to be VERY careful when going out at night to dances or coffee bars.  Knives were not unusual.  I got a “bloody nose” on more than one occasion.

Spent many a weekend afternoon in Brighton and Eastbourne - it really wasn’t safe there for families in the late 60s.

I don’t know whether the sample size in the survey I linked to is significant but if selected properly those numbers are not unusual in surveys.

We know that there was a culture of sexual misconduct just from what has become public knowledge over the recent past - whether it was worse then than it is now I don’t know but certainly that survey seems to suggest it was.

In conclusion it is very easy to look back with rose tinted glasses, most youngsters don’t carry knives nor do they get into trouble - it is important to remember that.

Re: Knives???

I don't remember any knife crime during that time (sheltered life eh?). How about the following?:-

The most recent set of figures, from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) - covering the first six months of 2018 as well as the final half of 2017 - show that police recorded 39,332 offences involving a knife or sharp instrument, a 12% rise year-on-year, and the highest number since 2011.

Re: Knives???

But without a breakdown of those offences the overall number doesn't say very much, the severity of offences varies wildly.

Re: Knives???

Plus, as the population grows in size, any statistic can show “more” of pretty much anything without it meaning there has been an actual increase per head of population.  That is why the government is so fond of the mantra “We are spending more than ever before on X, Y, or Z”.   Dazzling headlines, but you need to dig to check out the substance.

Re: Knives???

If knife crime in 2018 was the highest since 2011 doesn’t that mean that its not as high now as it was in 2011?

Further to "times of old" I don't recall hearing about this sort of thing in the '60s:-
