Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I’m a member for 14 years - I have today complained fiercely to EBay with regards to 4% + 75p charge on each item purchased as we all know this is a Back Door way of recovering the Seller Fees which were scrapped recently - Buyers already have adequate protection - as to payment 2 days after delivery - we’re at the mercy of Royal Mail to scan all  items when collected (not guaranteed) 😡

Fellow  members I urge you to let your disproval known - SHAME ON YOU Ebay😡😡

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Is there a relevant email address to contact customer service? I only seem to find a chatbot occasionally and have never yet had a query answered by that ignorant tyke!! 😆

I have so many questions!

I have no printer and don’t drive. Currently I have RM collection and they bring the label. Has worked wonderfully with not one issue.

I haven’t used couriers for years after several disasters with (non eBay) parcels. There are no local drop off places anyway. I would have to get a taxi to post office. Someone mentioned eBay sending a label…but you’d have to have a printer? My printer expired as it was very old.
I would like to ask my list of 10 questions and get reliable answers so I can decide what to do next.
As for calculating the actual selling price, someone suggested a spreadsheet and implied if you aren’t prepared to do the calculations you’re thick. I don’t consider myself stupid but at my advanced age, i’’m not prepared to do all this extra work for eBay’s random, thoughtless whims.
How to make your clients feel worthless and unwanted eh?

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Thanks for this as i knew they were making it fully mandatory but could find the official text supporting it. well thats me out then. how can they handle the postage and we sellers just select package size....i charge a bit extra on my postage to cover the full posting of the item which includes envelopes and other materials used. this means if i can not alter the postage price i would have to even more put up my prices to cover the cost to which even less point to use ebay

re......will be Ebay who have the contract with the post office or evri or whoever
I wonder.....Maybe Ebay will eventually have their own vans like Evri, and will collect the mail from sellers, scan it, sort it and deliver it, thus pocketing ALL the postage cost themselves, thus becoming their own UK delivery company,  could be called EBRI  .......

….. before mandating the program for eligible items listed by C2C sellers …..

They haven’t said (although they never actually do say) what an “eligible item” will be.

I know it usually means everything but could this be intentional ‘wiggle room’ to drip-feed items, in certain categories, into this impending disaster?

Your thoughts will be very much appreciated.

@trevdbowler based on the difficulties eBay has run into in the US discovering for the first time all the labor relations issues that come along with owning in house physical labor-centric warehouse operations for authentication - including but not limited to the first unionized workforce in eBay history that the company has been locked into a year+ long bargaining battle with, multiple complaints filed with the US National Labor Relations Board, and a class action lawsuit from workers alleging pay practices violated both state and federal labor laws - my guess is eBay will not be in any great hurry to try to their hand at actually owning any part of the delivery process. 😂

Whether for authentication or fulfillment/delivery, those kinds of operations are so completely different from the white collar/tech employee based "just a venue" model eBay was built on and so far dipping their toe in those water has proven to be much more expensive and a much bigger headache than eBay bargained for.

There are good reasons why they use third party partners for the global shipping program and some of the authentication offerings - and given how their in house efforts have turned out so far, I don't expect they'll be wading further into those waters any time soon.

I think it will be the usual exclusions like vehicles, and obviously collection items , and I have also seen a price cap, so items selling for over a certain amount will be excluded.   Probably ones that need to be signed for and to limit Ebay's exposure to risk.

@*devils.advocate* While eBay hasn't given details about their plans to make it mandatory, they have said what an eligible item currently is in the voluntary version of Simple Delivery.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/sellercentre/postage/simple-delivery

What listings are eligible for Simple Delivery?

Simple Delivery is currently available to private sellers in the UK selling:

  • Clothing items that have a ‘Buy it Now’ price, auction starting price, or reserve price of £500 or less
  • Items in all other eligible categories that have a 'Buy it Now' price, auction starting price, or reserve price of £750 or less

Items (once packaged) within the following dimensions and maximum weight:

  • For shop drop-off: where no side exceeds 120cm in length, the volume is no more than 245cm and the package is up to 20kg. To calculate the volume: add together the two shortest sides and multiply it by two, and then add the length.
  • For locker drop-off: 61cm x 46cm x 46cm and the package is up to 15kg.

Authenticity Guarantee and bulky listings are currently excluded from Simple Delivery.

Things could change of course before or when it becomes mandatory, but I think it's likely that much of the T&C will at least initially stay the same and eBay will simply remove the option to opt out for private sellers on eligible items -  so I highly recommend private sellers should check out that link and familiarize themselves with how Simple Delivery works to be prepared.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I can't even see the Simple Delivery option when I try to list an item in clothing? Just get the normal settings.

I don't use royal mail except on rare ocasions I have something going untraced in an envelope or it's very heavy and over EVRI limits.

Royal Mail is just not an option for me most days.   I could wait till Saturday morning, but that means if I sell on Sunday it could be 6 days before dispatch and won't get paid till at the earliest The tuesday after.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Yes you are totally right ,I have had many  things that I have sent and the postman obviously hasn't scanned them and the buyers haven't left feed back to say they have had them ,and  ebay mark them down as late delivery  so my seller rating has gone to 10.8 % for late delivery . So now I have changed all my post to tracked 48 so I know the postman has to scan them .I think it will be easy for buyers to say an item hasn't been received if it isn't tracked ,so they will get their money back on the buyers cost from Feb and how long will ebay make sellers wait for payment then if items aren't tracked .

It's all you business sellers masquerading as private sellers that have contributed to this. The absolute  front of someone listing dozens of brand new Bluetooth headphones whilst evading listing fees, only to whinge about eBay's new policy to deter people from purchasing from them is laughable.

Many of those commenting on here have countless listings for brand new items, yet are somehow private sellers.  This is on you lot. If you are unhappy, register yourselves as a business seller. Have any of you thought this is a play on ebays part for this very reason?

Us genuine private sellers that occasionally list our own genuinely  surplus items are the ones losing out.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I have numerous where it still shows as " delayed" as the system has not updated... some from November... they have been delivered and I have received feedback.. and this is my point regarding " funds held" as until the system updates we do not get our money!

So accordingly I would still  be waiting for my funds and making countless calls to customer service to get what is rightfully  mine... Where is our 24/7 customer service chat?

We are at the mercy " algorithms/ automation... and it is just not on!

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

If the system hasn't updated you get the money after 14 days.

Your countless calls to CS will just result in them telling you that, it won't get you the money any quicker.

That is probably because your postcode (CA) is on the list of postcodes that are currently excluded for items in clothing categories (where Packlink is presently used) although the exclusions appear to only apply to express delivery.  There are no exclusions for items in other categories.

What UK postcodes are excluded for Simple Delivery?

For clothing categories

No express delivery option will be available to your buyers, where your item is based in certain parts of any of the following postcodes: AB, BN, BT, CA, DD, DG, E1, EC, EH, FK, G8, GY, HS, IM, IP, IV, JE, KA, KW, LL, ML, NE, NG, PA, PH, PL, RH, SA, SY, TD, TQ, TR, YO, ZE.

Delivery from the following out-of-areas postcodes will be between 5-7 business days following dispatch: AB35-AB38, AB53-AB56, FK17-FK22, IM1-IM9, IV10-IV19, IV2, IV20-IV29, IV3, IV30-IV39, IV4, IV40-IV49, IV5, IV50-IV56, IV6-IV9, KA27, KA28, KW1, KW10-KW17, KW2-KW9, PA17, PA18, PA20-PA38, PA41-PA80, PH10, PH11, PH13-PH49, PH3, PH5, PH50, PH6, PH7, PO30-PO41, TR21-TR25. Simple

Delivery for clothing categories isn't available outside the UK and isn't available to PO Box or BFPO addresses.

For all other eligible categories

There are no postcode exclusions for all other eligible categories. Simple Delivery is available to PO Box and BFPO addresses.

That is for untracked...

If tracked post is not updating on the system for payment after delivery to the buyer ( ie feedback left and checked on the couriers own website) then there is something wrong!

And customer service will be called, otherwise I would be waiting for funds forever, as it shows with some of my November sales ( already delivered /feedback left) and yet showing as despatched / delivery delayed!!

I think you missed the point... buyers are paying for protection which really amounts to a 24/7 customer service by chat or in person... Where is the sellers customer support like this, and protection? Why should we have to rely on a system that is not fully working ( as can be seen by countless posts saying the same say November ones) ) for our funds to be released?

It won't much matter to me as I shall not be on here much longer only enough to see " how it plays" and to post here if it helps people, and to learn from others.
