hi all,
I've sold a cheap IP camera which I know was working properly. The buyer has now messaged me that the output is purple, which means most likely the item is defective. And I am not challenging this. I don't want to receive it back, the listing was set to 'no returns'.
While I feel for them and I find the situation unfortunate, what are my rights here?
. I could apologise and point out that the item was sold as seen and that it may have been damaged in transit;
. I could apologise and send a partial or full refund (thus accepting some responsibility - even if I tested the item before sending);
Does ebay have a way to compensate the buyer? I mean the buyer pays their protection money...
Cheers,
Pedro.

If the item was damaged in transit the buyer is entitled to a full refund. No returns only apply to "change of mind" returns.
However, if you used Simple Delivery when buyer opens a "Damaged" return ebay will refund and you keep the payment. The item is not returned.

As already advised, if the item was sent with Simple Delivery (which appears to be the case) and the buyer opens a return and claims that it 'Arrived damaged' then eBay will refund the buyer at no cost to you. However, if the buyer selects 'Item is defective' or 'Item doesn't match description or photos' as the reason then it will be down to you to sort out. You will can offer a partial refund but the buyer doesn't have to accept it. You can also refund in full without return if you wish.
Note items sold online cannot be 'sold as seen' as the item isn't actually seen by the buyer until they receive it.

"the item was sold as seen"
That phrase does not apply to anything bought online and posted.
Any buyer doesn't actually get to "see" the item physically until it arrives with them.

thanks all who chipped in. I appreciate the 'sold as seen' doesn't really apply i this situation.
you've answered my question - I have advised the buyer.
