How to stop ebay giving away my personal information with Simple Delivery

The Royal Mail online postage site allows sellers to choose not to display their home address on the delivery label when sending out items to buyers. Now that we have to use Simple Delivery, the Simple Delivery Royal Mail labels appear to show seller addresses as standard. Does anyone know how to turn this off like you can when purchasing postage directly from Royal Mail online? I don't feel it's right for ebay to be publishing this information on labels, and it seems very unnecessary now that ebay are responsible for items once they have entered the Royal Mail system.

But eBay's hasn't announced that they are opening a huge warehouse to store (even temporarily) all those undelivered items, so, in practice, they will be returned to the sender.

The alternative is that they are all diverted to RM's undelivered items depot in Belfast, to be destroyed or re-sold. At least returning them to the sender gives a chance for the situation to be rescued. (Remember SD is for private sellers only - any particular seller should very rarely come across such a situation, as they won't be sending huge numbers of packages.)

I do think it's just another manufactured problem, to allow the usual suspects to have a go at eBay.

With the volume of SD items being sent it's almost certain there will be undeliveries that might get returned to the seller. It's not the seller's problem if ebay have failed to make arrangements to process undeliveries themselves or with their suppliers they should have thought of that when they took on delivery responsibility from the seller.

Oh they did think of it, and are by these terms and label return address trying to give the problem to the seller like it was when the seller was involved before they cut them out.  Heads they win, tails the seller loses.

I can't see how ebay can greedily make money on postage that's bought from them without also taking on the responsibility that goes with it.

It's just unbelievable how unfair ebay want to make this place.

I put my sales on hold for a month but I'm starting to think I will never sell here again after nearly a quarter of a century they haven't had any money from me in a week and the other place are getting me hooked now.

Ebay just seem to be dumping on everyone and it's not cool and people won't forget.

Maybe they will follow Trump in the art of the u-turn.

If a buyer filed a chargeback for non delivery I would very much hope ebay wouldn't pursue the seller if the tracking shows it entered their carrier's network. The item should be returned to ebay to do whatever with, the seller doesn't want it back.

Currently in the event of a chargeback the seller is only protected if the tracking shows 'Delivered'.  'Delivery attempted' is not sufficient.  I doubt very much that that will change as a result of Simple Delivery.

In which case I hope that someone affected would one day take them to court to get a judge to confirm that's an unfair contract term.

"Yes, eBay's SD labels do include your address, for return purposes." "I find it hard to understand any realistic privacy concerns"

There is demand for the option to not display the sender's address, hence why Royal Mail offer it when you buy postage through their website.  People will have their own individual reasons for choosing this option.

In terms of returns, Royal Mail still have the sender's address so are able to return the parcel if necessary. When you buy on the Royal Mail website you still provide your address so that it can be linked to the tracking number, it just doesn't get printed on the label if you don't want it to. Equally, ebay could give Royal Mail the sender's address details electronically for their records without needing it to be printed on the label.

And what happens when your items are undelivered and there is no return address?

They would still have the address, as ebay could give them the return address electronically, it just wouldn't be printed on the label. Exactly the same as if you buy the postage on the Royal Mail website and choose not to print your address on the label. You still give them the sender's address to be linked to the tracking number so that Royal Mail have it if they need it for returns.

I haven’t read all the thread,so sorry if it’s being answered but why can’t you just scribble it out with a marker pen before posting

Re: How to stop ebay giving away my personal information with Simple Delivery

I have always jotted my return address on the reverse of the parcel. It wouldn't worry me having the address on show on the actual label, it would save me a job.

Re: How to stop ebay giving away my personal information with Simple Delivery

Ebay giving them your address you didn't put on a label is more of a breach than putting it on the label.

People are blowing this entirely out of proportion, tracked services require a return address by RM.

This is in case the recipient does NOT get the parcel, not because they simply want to return it.

Say you send an item. the buyer isn't in, so it goes back to the sorting office and a red slip to collect is left, the buyer did not collect in time so RM need to get it back to you, because you won't get paid out on undelivered items, so do you want your item back or would you rather RM sell it off as undelivered mail like you see in so many youtube videos so you're out the item AND the money

Undelivered and Return Mail are 2 different things and it seems quite a few people struggle with this concept because they just want to be angry at eBay over something else

I don't think anyone is suggesting this is any bigger than it really is - it's an edge case.

Sure the SD dispatch label should have a return address but it should be ebay's address as the seller is not involved in the delivery anymore unless ebay have made special arrangements with the carrier or another supplier to help them in processing undelivered items (not to be confused with a return label from an ebay case such as an INAD which I agree should go back to seller).

What happens to the item is a matter for ebay and they certainly should not be taking the money back from the seller (or delaying giving the money to the seller if 14 days has not yet passed) if the delivery contract between ebay and the buyer has failed. The seller's delivery obligations should stop at the point of  posting - they are not part of the contract for delivery anymore under SD - ebay have cut them out.

I think it also raises another question on if it's reasonable that the buyer tax service should release the money 2 days after delivery (or 14 days) or if once SD becomes mandatory it should be 2 days after posting (or 14 days) as again the seller is not responsible for the delivery anymore.

They won't be taking any money back, the seller simply won't get it until the item is shown as delivered, so they'll lose both the item and the money they should have gotten paid.

It's ALWAYS been the sellers contract to get the item paid for to the buyer, it's why the seller has to refund and then claim from the carrier, ebay is just a platform which facilitates that sale (however badly)

The seller would get paid after 14 days under current policy.

Remember the contract for delivery under SD is between ebay and the buyer - the seller should not be liable or involved if it fails.

Yes and that's changing with SD as the seller is no longer part of the delivery contract and ebay are no longer just a marketplace but selling the buyer an ebay delivery service. In future ebay would make claims on carriers not the seller as they are not involved.

The sellers are not buying the labels so cannot claim from the carrier.

The buyers are buying ebay's delivery service.

Re: How to stop ebay giving away my personal information with Simple Delivery

Agreed.  Whatever responsibility the seller had when the buyer paid them for postage has now been transferred to ebay as they are the ones that the buyer is buying postage from under sd.

"Ebay giving them your address you didn't put on a label is more of a breach than putting it on the label."

Ebay are already giving RM your address, that's why it shows on the Royal Mail label that ebay give you. All I'm saying is this could be done without needing it to be printed. Royal Mail don't need the address on the label to return it to you, hence why Royal Mail give you the option to not print it on the label if you buy tracked services directly from them - the return address is stored electronically within their systems linked to the tracking.

All I'm asking for is for ebay to give sellers the exact same option that they would have if they bought postage directly from Royal Mail (which is what many people did before Simple Delivery).
