Paying extra on top of prepaid label at post ofice

Not sure if anyone has also had to do the same, but I basically sold an item whilst I was on holiday and told my buyer I would post when I returned. All good, and they purchased the prepaid label via Royal Mail with simple delivery.

My mistake, but I'd chosen my item to be a large letter instead of a small parcel (went by weight, forgot about dimensions!). Went to the post office and they wouldn't accept my package for being too big.

Ebay already thinks my item has been sent out as it's past the dispatch window, so I can't cancel the order to edit the postage options, and I still have it in my possession. Is there any way my buyer can cancel on their end? Or is there a way that I can use the original large letter label, and just pay a difference on top for the extra to make it a small parcel?

you can cancel postage labels and then rebuy (you might have to rebuy via R|M not sure.
Have done it once via ebay, but never checked to see that I got the refund...

On desktop when in orders I think you go to left hand menu and select postage labels then there is an option to cancel

This doesn't work for me and says "this postage label can't be cancelled" - assuming due to the item already saying it has been dispatched.

Unsure if ebay automatically changed the status to dispatched once we got past the final date to post, or if it happened when the post office scanned the original QR code, but it thinks the parcel is en route now!

ebay always says item is dispatched as soon as label is purchased (which is daft), so probably too late.

It is a pity that the post office can't just add extra postage to make it to the correct amount.

Ah that's what I was wondering.. so I can't print the prepaid label and just pay extra on top to make up the correct postage? Will I just have to buy postage again when I get there?

you said: "Went to the post office and they wouldn't accept my package for being too big"; so I doubt they'll do it... so you might have to just pay it all

It isn't possible to cancel a Simple Delivery label but if it isn't used then the buyer should be automatically refunded for it at some point.

You can't just add extra postage to the label as it is for a VATable service.

In theory you can simply pay the excess at a Post Office but I suspect in the small post offices of today they will not let you.  Years ago I took this up with Royal Mail Customer Services in Plymouth [Freepost].  If they will not let you then pay the whole lot and write with the label that you cannot use to Royal Mail Customer Service Freepost Plymouth
