Refund confusion

I’m hoping someone can help as I’m confused about how eBay dealt with this for me. I sold an item and the buyer paid and I posted it. I got a message from EVRI saying they were unable to deliver due to an address issue. I google mapped the address and it was a corner shop. I contacted the buyer and relayed what I’d been told by EVRI. He then says it’s not his address but he always collects from there. I contacted EVRI and whilst waiting for a very delayed call back they emailed to say they were returning the item to me. I contacted the buyer to explain then contacted eBay as I was unsure what to do. They said it wasn’t my fault and to get the buyer to contact them. He did and they have allowed him to cancel the item and get a full refund. There wording was if I didn’t do it they would do it for me (withdraw the funds from my bank account). I’m now out of pocket for the postage costs and am baffled as to how the expense falls to me. Any suggestions ideas or enlightenment would be appreciated. Not the end of the world but as ever with eBay it buyer first second and third etc and seller last place

Unless you can prove delivery, you have to refund buyer,

so you will always lose the postage you paid.

Have you received item back?

If not you need to chase Evri for it or a refund.
