Sales............stop start, stop start................COMPLETETLY DEAD again October 2024

Hi

Wonder if anyone else have noticed a sudden decline in sales since Jan 2024. Unsure what could have caused this.

We have started moving our business however we still have good amount of listings on ebay platform but sales died completely since 20/10/24 and today no SALES.

Has there been any changes to promoted listings by ebay that may have killed it.

Please advise.

I don't think Ebay are to blame..this time. People just have not got any money to spend on luxuries with energy and food prices shooting up. People have just come off holiday so they will have even less money. More people are selling their second hand stuff on Ebay rather than buying and its the same on Etsy. We are virually on the brink of WW3 and people are being careful and buying in extra food.

I just do not understand why sellers are wondering why their sales have dropped. Get off your computer and take a look around.

Over on the website I have had 2 of my best months since lockdown.

So there are buyers with money and are spending it.

Hands up I am quiet here. But that is due my own voluntary deciscion to close

my eBay shop / reduce listings so I could concentrate on the website / you-tube sales

And its paying off.

May try a shop here again in the new year. But as of now I am in no hurry.

eBay also don`t seem to be in a hurry to ask me to open the shop again with any tempting offers.

I'm sorry but I disagree with the "people don't have money and all the prices have gone up" excuse. We have been to multiple events in the past 6 weeks and people had plenty of money. I spent 3 weekends at various shopping malls recently (not by choice!) and they were packed with people, a lot of whom were carrying multiple shopping bags, many of them high end brands.

Yes there are people struggling and yes prices are still rising but we've had a strong summer and September and October are usually a little quieter for us but for sales to suddenly drop on a specific day (that has been mentioned by other sellers here and on another forum for eBay sellers we access) it seems to hark back to the days when eBay announced a change and on that day of change everything would grind to an economic halt.

There may be many reasons for the slow down but they wouldn't all have an effect on the same day.

Just my opinion, take it or leave it.

Nonsense, retail sales were up in September, it's ebay that's quiet, there are lots of threads about it if you look on here.

A great many of us have been on ebay for some considerable time and have weathered financial issues, such as the financial crisis of 2008. ebay itself has consistently proved to be a factor to be taken into consideration when selling and it can be the most difficult to compensate for. Trading goal posts are moved, technical glitches can and do wipe out sales and have taken down businesses. At a difficult time for businesses ebay have chosen to go to fee free selling for private sellers, the predicted up turn in sales from this have yet to materialise (if ever), and now there's technical issues killing what sales have been possible.

Maybe where you live but where I live people are cutting back and I know lots of people who normally spend a lot and even they are cutting back. My friends in the USA and Australia are all reporting the same, that people are not spending like they were so its not "Nonsense". Plus people are going to Temu now for cheap gifts or buying from shops as many shops are lowering prices. I am not spending on ebay like I used to due to rising prices. The world is in turmoil so its not going to be easy for the next few months so you had better get used to it. You live in cloud cuckoo land if you think its just ebay thats stopping people buying.

I have also been on ebay and etsy for a long time. Nothing we have had in the past is like what is going on in the world at the moment. The financial crisis in 2008 was a walk in the park compared to now.  Do any of  you actually know whats going on in the world? Its not just the UK its a worldwide crisis. In fact where we are now is nothing to what is coming. Those sellers selling the cheaper items may be okay (for the moment) but those selling anything over £10 will struggle.

It's been weird for us since about the end of April / beginning of May, at the start of the year, we were doing really well, then all of a sudden......... kaput!! It's been off-on, low sales, then the odd high sales, mostly small value orders. eBay just seems to almost be no longer a viable marketplace for small businesses, or those still trying to make a profit in the face of counterfeit goods being sold here from China!

Well, i spend 10 hours a day trading on the UK stock market and about an hour doing ebay, so yes i'd say i have a reasonable grasp on where the world is.

Obviously you have broached the subject of the global financial system, tomorrow is a budget that everyone and their cat has been waiting for, honest opinion, it could be the threshold of the death of a nation, watch the gilt market, they want to change the rules, but someone has to buy the debt, the rates on that debt could be a negative catalyst.

Got to be nuts not to realise that the Uk and the world in fact is in turmoil and this affects online sales. Our country is in the worst state I've ever known it to be in and with a highly damaging budget to be announced this could really be the end of the uk. My accountant has said the country could actually go bust. Reeves is out of her depth and could make Truss look like an angel

£21 billion for carbon capture, i despair, a one off event, when it's full that's it. A pine sapling bought in bulk is lew than a £1, taking other costs into account, how many trees can you plant on unproductive land for that kind of cash thats a productive asset, not a liability. Isle of Man, today decided their attemp is to plant 30,000 trees............

The UK went pop in the 70's under Labour, this time the country as a whole has less fat on its back.

Every other Saturday i go get a hair cut, nice woman that does it, about 25, goes to Costa twice a day 5.5 days a week at £4.80 a go........... I didn't grow up with a Father, but one thing he said that stayed in my mind is that "what is, will not always be", but people presume it will be, human nature, for me since January before covid, i battened down the hatches. I have a threshhold or line in the sand, once breached i'll leave the UK.

So you are officially a non-"working person" category - shame on you!!

Same here mind - despite working 15 hours a day, I'm also not a "working person" as I also tinkle with the markets.

And best trade of the last 2 weeks - ebay puts - finally I have worked out how to make money on ebay, while at the same time boxing up my mountain of stock and sending it off to auction where it becomes someone else's problem.

I'm targeting exit stock by end of 2024 and exit UK in 2025.

@hudsonsclothes

Clicked on a couple of yours and mine, scrolled through the images, not seeing the other items as you described. If this is a new thing it could be good, as long as the buyer stays within my shop and listings long enough to get that sale!

Yeah I had another look and it was only on certain ones I'll have a look now and see if it shows up. Wish I'd took a screenshot. It was the final pic on some of the listings it had a couple of small pics of other listings then when you click on it, it took me to my shop front page

Its results day today so lets see how it goes, but have a trailing stop loss just in case they beat expectations.

I'm braced for lots of FTSE vol today.....it could get a little choppy out there later on

Hey ho, and back to packing up more boxes of stock that has been sat gathering dust in my store room for months/years. Such a good feeling.

You mentioned Temu I always said it that site what has taken some of our buyers not all but a large portion of them. So I went over to Temu and had a look at first I thought the good s have to be rubbish for the prices they offer and the customer service seemed to good to be true.

I thought I would give it a try I needed new pj's thought if they are rubbish noone will see me in them any way.

Picked out 4 nice pairs of satin Pj's free postage 8 day  delivery time given all for just under £40.00

the customer service was fantastic they keep you informed every step of the way you know where your parcel is at all times. It arrived the day before it due date.

I will admit i was afraid to open the parcel in case it was rubbish but I was shocked beautifully packed all in zip lock bags and the pjs were absolutly beautiful well made heavy satin fabric, true to size. There was not one thing to complain about.

So IMO buyers are going to spend on Temu you do get more for your money than you will in this country. I have since bought a lot of other items everything has been fine no complaints.

Ebay needs to take note they have competion.
