I see thatchers funeral jamboree is costing £10 million and MP's and lords are claiming up to £3,750 each for returning from their holidays to pay their dues to thatcher,In the same week hundreds of pounds are being taken from people in poverty,It's no wonder there will be protests in London next Wednesday

hi #99 have you ever visited Wallsend on Tyne the home of Swan Hunter Shipbuilders where ONCE 9000 people helped build some of the worlds best ships, i say once because of her and her predecessors Swan hunter Shipyards are no longer there, the tower cranes that lifted the ship units into place are all gone, the slipways are all gone, the pre-fabrication sheds echo to the ghosts of the past because the work force is gone, she and her party decimated not only the pits but also the steel and then the shipyards, so don't ask me to remember her as a strong leader, that she was not, anyone can destroy industry's, only a good leader can keep them open, she was a vile vindictive person and thought nothing of those she and her party cast aside (nothings changed there has it)?  so come next Wednesday when they waste £10,000,000 pounds of taxpayers money,   money that should go to far better causes than to parade a dead body through the streets of London, i for one will remember the good days by raising a glass or two in memory of the great ship yard she and her party destroyed.

£10,000,000.00 for a funeral with all the razzamatazz, parades, police cordoning off the streets et al.  Terrible, isn't it?  How much more money is GOING to be made?!  Every single cafe, restaurant, pub and taverno is going to bring extra staff to "cope" with the upheaval.  Churchill had a grand send-off.  Woolworths had Churchill busts of him the very next day.  2/- for a normal bust, 2/6 for a larger one.  They were already made - all they were waiting for was the date.  Exactly the same thing is going to happen with Margaret Thatcher.  Florists are making a killing, even before it all gets underway.  It's big, big, business - there are going to be books, comemorative plates, documentaries, everything under the sun.  All police leave cancelled.  The police arent dreading the event - they're RELISHING IT!   Imaging the overtime bill!  And it's not just on Wednesday - an official demonstration/rally/party has already been given formal approval for Trafalgar Square on Saturday.  Fair enough, there are going to be a few incidents, but that's what the police have been trained for.  "Rent-a-lackey" brought in from other areas too, as a newspaper vendor found to his cost.  Where I work, next door to the Tower of London, they're having cannons go off every minute to mark the start of the procession.

Get real, man.  How much more money is wasted in expenses every year but not mentioned as it's spread across the board.  Nobody gives a fig - it's just an excuse for one more giant jamboree.

It really gets my back up to think my daughters middle school was closed because of the so called cut backs.

The school sat quietly surrounded by fields down a country lane and it now sits there completely empty.

Not only did they close that school but they closed all middle schools on a mass scale covering a very large area indeed and crammed all the children into high schools.

so the three tier system has gone and two the tier is now in place, primary and high so the 11 year olds go from primary straight to high school at 11 years of age with the 16 and 17 year olds.

Why were the middle schools closed and boarded up and sold? so the gov have extra spending money to spend on this crap?

My attitude is every penny counts and every penny this gov takes should be put to good use especially the children of this country, dont take what they need and spend the saving on this nonsense.

I do not see the logic in this perfect example what so ever.

Lady Thatcher negotiated a rebate of our money from the EU that now totals over £100 BILLION, compared to this I think the £10 million being spent on her send off is value for money.

Diplomacy is the ability to tell someone to go to hell in such a way that they look forward to the trip.

Not taking into account she specifically said she didn't want a send off on this scale:|

Irrespective of the amount of money she generated for the country etc etc The whole thing stinks when there are starving kids in this world yet £10 million can be spent on a funeral.

Value for money?:| .

State funeral in all but name, let her wealthy family pay for it instead of scrounging off the tax payers,By the way I thought the "tax payers alliance" would have been up in arms about this, they must have missed the news :^O

The final bill for the funeral may approach £10million. Lady Thatcher’s family is meeting an unspecified amount of the expense, thought to cover transport, flowers and the cremation, with the Government funding the rest, including security.

Foreign Secretary William Hague said: ‘When it comes to money, the rebate she negotiated for this country from the EU has brought us so far £75billion…I think that puts money in perspective.’

Have you ever studied the history of Swan Hunter and seen the only thing done by Thatcher's government was to privatise it in 1988?

What destroyed the yards was the inability of the company to build ships on time and on budget, that's why the cranes went in 2006.

The industries that went under were uneconomic ones many of which were being propped up by the taxpayer.

I don't dispute that but Al has claimed, "Nice to see our MPs all picked up £3000 each to turn up at Parliament yesterday"

All I can find is that MPs can claim a maximum of £3,750 for travel expenses to get to Parliament - so unless they are on a long haul holiday it is unlikely that they will be able to claim anything approaching that figure.  Most unlikely to be ALL MPs
