On Tuesday, on my way to a hospital appointment, I walked through the town in Newport, South Wales. Passing through I saw at least three homeless people , sleeping in the doorways of empty shops. I thought at the time that these poor people will now go further down the list of people needing help, as the country imports more 'child' migrants. When I returned home, there on my TV was the Welsh actor, Michael Sheen, yet another Luvvie, making his heart bleed for all to see, and telling us that Wales has not done enough to help , and that we should be taking more in. I made a mental note to never again watch anything that he has worked in. He should go to Newport and speak to those poor homeless people and help them sort out their problems.
Also...thinking about this child migrant issue, I remembered that during WW1 many brave young lads in this country added a few years to their age, in order to be able to enlist and fight for their country. And yet, we have these young fit men in Calais, knocking years off their ages in order to be able to try and get to the UK and have a nice easy, cushy safe life. What does that tell us?

Exactly the same argument used in the 1930s regarding Jews trying to leave Germany. The arguments used against allowing them to enter the UK included their failure to learn the language, they'd be safe in France, they don't assimilate, they form ghettos, they take jobs etc. etc.

There's a big difference in distances travelling from Afghanistan, Somalia and Syria than from Germany and there are many "safe" countries in between.

Strange that there was no follow-up on this 'story'
Could it be that one little sentence in the report that is the problem. The majority of arrests were for 'immigration offences'. Why not give the figure - was it 451, 700, 899 or what?

I agree but I also find it telling that the same attitudes persist as those taken by many 80 years ago.
Positive arguments such as assisting refugees and migrants closer to their homes are perfectly fair but negative discriminatory attitudes achieve nothing other than reinforce 'hate', (in the widest sense of the word), in others.
24-10-2016 11:49 AM
The "attitude" is more relevant today than it was before WW2. They don't want to be "safe" in a country of refuge at all, they want to come here to leach off us because they've been encouraged to aim for Britain having been told by others who've already made it here that the foolish British give them somewhere to live and money for nothing where they can set themselves up with plenty of criminal activities and can scream "racism" if they get criticised or apprehended for anything where liberals and other do-gooders will support them.....

The same argument used with regards to Jewish immigrants in the '30s!
Immigrants are in a lose/lose situation - if they work they are depressing wages and/or taking jobs from British workers - if they don't work they are scroungers.
It will take a few minutes but it really is worthwhile reading this article - https://www.theguardian.com/uk/2002/jun/08/immigration.immigrationandpublicservices

This is the 21st Century. The genuine, good people who want to integrate are always welcome here but the criminal scroungers have multiplied and seem to be making for here from all corners of the Earth.

The same thing that has always been said by those who really just don't like strangers. There are thousands, nay probably millions, aye possibly billions who would love to come to the UK and would willingly live and work honestly and integrate fully - they'd still be labelled as scroungers, wastrels and villains by many.
Personaly my stance is this - there are three groups of potential immigrants - economic, refugees and those we invite. The first group need to be controlled according to our ability to absorb them, (and whether it is economically good for the country), the second with a true sense of humanity, (even if it costs the U.K.), and the third as to whether or not we are damaging their homeland by inviting them here.
Within all three groups there will be those who are not what they appear to be - there will be criminals, there will be scroungers and there will be those who don't want to do things our way - exactly the same as amongst the general population. Because some immigrants fall into those groups there is no more justification for generalising and labelling them all the same than there is for labelling all teenagers the same.

Like there's no justification in slapping the "Welcome" flag on all those potential immigrants hanging around Calais.
As to other potential immigrants, there are "the correct channels" to go through and those that get here by illegal means demonstrate their willingness to initially break the Law and their willingness to continue to do so by staying here "under the radar".
Others, who know how to play the "I'm staying game" also demonstrate their willingness to break the Law by absconding once found and bailed......

The French would have us believe that the camp in Calais has been cleared, but those that are desperate to come to Britain ILLEGALLY have probably just moved to other coastal towns from whence to pursue their aims. I am so sick of seeing it on TV and the duplicity of the government, aid agencies and media in trying to make us believe that grown men, some of them in their twenties, are 'children'....I no longer care what happens to any of them.

How very sad that caring seems to be waining towards people of all kinds, in many of lifes situations.
But then it has to be expected and is more and more evident as time goes on.
Why? because it is prohesy being fullfilled.
Matthew 24:12, and because of the increasing of lawlessness, the love of the greater number will grow cold.
2 Timothy 3:1-5 But know this, that in the last days, critical times hard to deal with will be here. 2, For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, haughty, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, disloyal, 3, having no natural affection, not open to any agreement, slanderers, without self-control, fierce, without love of goodness, 4, betrayers, headstrong, puffed up with pride, lovers of pleasures rather than lovers of God, 5 , having an appearance of godliness but proving false to its power

Anyone thinking that refusing to assist, now or in the future, genuine refugees is the 'right idea' simply demonstrates a total lack of humanity! No more, no less.
"Even if found to be genuine refugees, they are already blocked from being resettled in Australia. They can either return home, be resettled on Manus or Nauru, or go to a third country."
30-10-2016 10:03 AM
That article was written in 2013, was speculation on a proposal to Cabinet, was actually proposed by then Prime Minister Tony Abbott and eventually was watered down by Cabinet to the current laws.
Genuine Refugee's can live in Australia.
Boat people who were not genuine but economic refugees have a choice to go back to where they came from or choose another Country that will take them.
Overstayers who get caught do get permanent bans and this has not changed for many decades.
30-10-2016 11:05 AM
Those grown men pretending to be children aren't showing much humanity to their fellow immigrants.
Making sure they're safe and taking the place of genuine children, girls and women who are far more at risk than them.
30-10-2016 11:06 AM
The majority are not refugees, they're economic migrants.
Refugees have a way of legally being granted assylum, economic migrants are only out for what they can get out of a country.

If even only half of the climate change reports are true, the world will have to deal with a lot more people fleeing their flooded coastal areas for safety

There are many people like yourself who wish help all these people and there just as many who don't want to help any of them. The majority of people are in the middle and are quite happy and willing to help those that are in need and vulnerable. However, stories of 'young men' being allowed asylum in this and other countries are causing a tide of resentment towards all of them. This is not helpful, but inevitable. These 'young men' have to take responsibility for their actions and not blame the British and other Europeans for not wishing to help given the circumstances.
Sanctuary for these fit young men could have been found in various safe camps around the world. In those they could have been put to work helping their fellow citizens until such time they could all return to their homeland. They chose not to help, but trek 2000 miless across Europe and through many safe countries to live in squalor near Calais. They attack the truck drivers using the port, they attack the police and cause criminal damage. Then when told to move on, with significant assistance from aid charities and the French authorities, decide to cause even more criminal damage by setting fire to the camp. Why would any country want to accept such people; when they don't get their own way, they cause inexorable trouble - incredible!

The Bible also urges people to 'go forth and multiply'....and this is the biggest threat to Humankind in this world today. There are millions, possibly billions, of people in this world living in war zones or in desperate need of something or other. I view the situation as hopeless...the major religions are not suddenly going to tell their followers not to have so many offspring. Most decent human beings have an element of altruism within them, but when times get really desperate, as they are going to get in the not too far future, people look after their own families and countrymen. Resources are limited in this country...we cannot be nanny to the world's starving millions.
When Matthew and Timothy wrote their epistles, they had no idea of what the world would be like 2,000 years later. Overpopulation is bringing us to where we are now, coupled with various government polices over the last century. There is nothing I can do about the problems we face, and that Is why I have stopped worrying or caring about refugees or immigrants. I am worrying and caring about my own.
