Douglas Carswell's defection to Ukip.

The Clacton MP's decision to join Nigel Farage is like the rest of his career, principled and decent writes Peter Oborne - Daily Telegraph's chief political commentator.

Well it certainly makes for some exitement at last...as the Tory whips scramble to secure party against further departures after the Eurosceptic MP triggers Clacton  byelection.

And he is honourable and decent enough to deflect on principle.

Eight Tory MP's are reported to be talking to Ukip about deflection?  (we will see) ..... Smiley LOL

Well we had new labour looks like we now have now have new conservatives.

It's quite sad because the country does need a new party that represents them,

unlike the current bunch of ghost riders on the gravy train, unseen unheard but taking 100,000s each year.

Nigel Borage also announces plan to revive that iconic Brew Watneys red barrel. It combines all the qualities of UKIP, warm, wet, weak and devoid of any endearing qualities.

Douglas Carswell will smash the others at the by election this coming week.
UKIP will have its first MP here in clacton,essex..
Liberals will vanish into insignificance ,and will certainly never get another chance to join a government.
I  am not that keen on researching history, but i take it that at some stage in the past the cons/labs/libs were once all fledgeling parties who through popularity managed to get going. No doubt all "new" parties have trouble getting manifestos together, and lets be honest even those who have the right to run the government (which the toroies/lib certainly dont) have broken so many manifesto promises they are irrelevant anyway.
Conservatives and labour have run this country forever now, they have both had the chances to get it rightover the many years, yet we live in a country where they have achieved only huge debt between them and declining lifestyles for many and riches for those that "matter".
The parties/politicians are supposed to be the voice of the people, but yet we have new people shouting from a differant angle and this is interesting and hopeful to many who are fed up to the back teeth of being lied to by the mainstream parties.
Ukip are appealing to people, and as usual those who dont agree will dig deep to denegrate an upcoming popular political party,we dont need to justify our support we just need to support, and support many will do.
Many have mocked how a vote for UKIP is a vote for labour, but this is a (just about) democratic country where people are taught (i was at school and by my peers) to use my vote for what i believed in,i cannot use my vote in the hope that Cameron will keep his promise of a referendum (we all know he will not deliver,he has lied so many times before...shame on the man),so i like many other thousands, tens of thousand, hundreds of thousands and probably millions will be voting for a party that seem to be a breath of fresh air and are impressive enough to get my vote.

I'd be very surprised if Douglas Carswell doesn't win the byelection and it is quite possible, but not as likely, that Mark Reckless will win his.  The record of defectors hanging onto their seats at subsequent national elections is not quite so rosy.

What has done for UKIP winning many seats at the General Election next year was the result of the Alternative Vote referendum in 2011 - the Lib Dems must be taking a huge breath of relief that they did not win that vote - with the way the UKIP support is spread country wide compared to the Lib Dems concentrations of support they are only on the road to winning maybe 3 or 4 seats as against the Lib Dems 30 to 40, despite their much lower overall national support.

Good for you Signtique...good post, but don't be surprised if you get labels stuck on you saying 'Foamer, racist, ignorant, Daily Mail reader, uneducated, ignorant'. That's what happens on here. And I hope UKIP do well in Clacton this week!

I haven't called UKIP supporters 'foamers' or racist - I do however stand by my assertion that many supporters are 'ignorant' of many of their policies outside of the two well publicised ones concerning immigration and membership of the EU.

How many of those who will vote for Douglas Carswell at the byelection are aware of and support his voting record as detailed in my post at #3.  the same of course can be said of those voting for the other party candidates.

It is party politics that has failed this country, we no longer vote for individuals but for a heirarchy and then complain when our individual needs are not a priority for those in government.

Thanks Astrologica, the fact that others can be so derogative to others who don't support their point of view is a normal way of having a bash,it's called hypocrisy.
I have many times been slated for being racist,it goes in one ear and out of the other, especially as i am married (happily for twenty years in April) to an Asian.
A foamer, well i am not even sure what that means, maybe that's where the ignorance kicks in...Smiley Happy
Daily Mail...no i am a strong believer of having a quick look at the sport whilst queing up to pay for the milk in the morning..Smiley LOL
Uneducated...well,i don't know,a few o'levels,a couple of A'levels,a career as a junior underwriter in Lloyds of London, blah blah blah
Oh yes and now i am skint and make signs on Ebay ,oh it goes on doesn't it !
I need no encouragement or approval from others on how i should use my choice of vote, indeed i listen to others and that is why i am so in favour of change.
We all are here to run our small, medium or large businesses, yet if we had a management team in place that from day one had completely run the balance sheet into the ground, had lied through their back teeth about implementations they were going to deliver but never actually achieved, the list goes on and on and on.....but you would certainly take action and get that management team out.Well that's my foaming, ingnorant,Daily Mail reading, uneducated view of how Conservative/Labour/Liberals are and will run this country.
So i have the chance to change it with my single vote, albeit several million more are required, but it's a start that i am willing to help with.

Well, a brief look at the 1930s might be a good idea.

If you're doing a Google crash-course - the keywords "Mosley" and "Demagogue" should help.

And I wonder where UKIP got the idea of the "People's Army" from?

Oh dear. I think the Swiss Watch here is going to be the source that tells the correct time, as opposed to some broken Mickey Mouse watch given away free with the Daily Express.
It's quite ironic that Kippers often claim the "political establishment" are "out of touch" with reality. Yet "reality" to Kippers usually seems to comprise of an odd mix of fear, paranoia, tabloid headlines, and conspiracy theories.

I wonder if UKIP will end up the same way as the Social Democrats and the Gang of Four? They were going to take the country by storm to hear them talk.

They effectively became the Lib Dems. I think "Cleggmania" just prior to the 2010 election is perhaps more comparable. Problem for ukip is that a significantly large proportion of their voter base are going to be worm food or wind-up in nursing homes within the next 15 years - Demographics are just not on their side.

For a Party that wants to "end political correctness", ukip supporters do seem to take offence and hit the censor button very easily.
