Covid-19.

Reading and listening to the news reports about the spread of the virus, the common denominator seems to be travel?

Surely if travel was halted until the incidences of the virus have "died down", the spread to other countries wouldn't happen?

We've also seen the scramble to find and produce a vaccine for the virus but there are studies going on with existing drugs.

Amongst the ones I've seen mentioned are:-

The old Bacillus Calmette-Guerin TB vaccine.

Actemra (Tocilizumab).

Hydroxychloroquine.

Azithromycin.

Ivermectin.

Remdesivir

Favipiravir.

And of all things, Colchicine.

Anyone heard of any others?

Not even heard of the ones you have listed!

Blimey, where've you been? All have been well publicised (in turn) but Colchicine was the last I heard about. I've got nearly a full bottle of that, over 90 little tablets innocent

Such an awful thing to trade in đŸ˜© wouldn’t it be great if the trade in all wild birds and mammals were stopped once and for all?

I would have thought that far more wild fish are caught and traded than pangolins

Re: Covid-19.

Absolutely.

Such a difficult task tho' with the black market, evil criminal gangs and so much money involved.

It's illegal to trade Pangolins and many other endangered species and their products have been illegal to trade for a long time, with CITES etc. but it still goes on and on.  Breaks my heart.

I know this is a stupid thing to say, but pity this virus doesn't just wipe out the bad people.

Pangolins are critically endangered, but you are right, so are some fish e.g. Bluefin tuna, European eel, some sharks and other fish, and they are traded illegally although in what numbers, I don't know, but given their ecological status all takes are bad..

I was quoting the opening of the programme I was watching when I posted and perhaps the programme makers weren't being pedantic enough and should have used the word 'mammal' rather than 'animal'.  I think a lot of people associate the word 'trafficked' with big land mammals like elephants, rhinos, and big cats etc. although it applies to all illegal wildlife trade.

During the 12 months filming the programme I watched tonight, 100,000 pangolins were taken from the wild

Re: Covid-19.

...After listening to some pretty harsh comments & arguing over reopening or completely shutting down for another two weeks, someone in their right mind wrote this.
Don’t know who wrote it, but it’s spot on.
Perspective:
WE ARE NOT IN THE SAME BOAT ...
I heard that we are all in the same boat, but it's not like that. We are in the same storm, but not in the same boat. Your ship could be shipwrecked and mine might not be. Or vice versa.
For some, quarantine is optimal. A moment of reflection, of re-connection, easy in flip flops, with a cocktail or coffee. For others, this is a desperate financial & family crisis.
For some that live alone they're facing endless loneliness. While for others it is peace, rest & time with their mother, father, sons & daughters.
With the weekly increase in unemployment some are bringing in more money to their households than they were working. Others are working more hours for less money due to pay cuts or loss in sales.
For some not getting on with Family domestic abuse is rife...we never know whwt goes on behind closed doors.
Some were concerned about getting a certain candy for Easter while others were concerned if there would be enough bread, milk and eggs for the weekend.
Some want to go back to work because they don't qualify for unemployment and are running out of money. Others want to kill those who break the quarantine.
Some are home spending 2-3 hours/day helping their child with online schooling while others are spending 2-3 hours/day to educate their children on top of a 10-12 hour workday.
Some have experienced the near death of the virus, some have already lost someone from it and some are not sure if their loved ones are going to make it. Others don't believe this is a big deal.
Some have faith in God and expect miracles during this 2020. Others say the worst is yet to come.
So, friends, we are not in the same boat. We are going through a time when our perceptions and needs are completely different.
Each of us will emerge, in our own way, from this storm. It is very important to see beyond what is seen at first glance. Not just looking, actually seeing.
We are all on different ships during this storm experiencing a very different journey.
Realize that and be kind.

Re: Covid-19.

Going back to my posts about existing drugs proving (before clinical trials) helpful, add to the list these:-

Chloroquine

Bemcentinab

Dexamethasone

Also, I mentioned (I forget where) the pneumonia jab. I've seen mention by a doctor that having had the pneumonia jab won't stop you getting covid-19 but it will help in either reducing the effect of or stop you developing pneumonia.

As time goes on, new information about existing drugs is coming out so different people are, or have been, helped by different treatments.

On a different tack, where did this latest virus start? China that's not in dispute?

Where did the 1918 so-called Spanish Flu start? It came to prominence in Europe but as to where it started, that's still argued about? Historians claim that it was really transmitted by Chinese labourers who were shipped out to England, France and Canada and that there had been an outbreak of a flu-like disease in China already in late 1917. It was also called "winter sickness".

Now where did the 1957 flu epidemic start? In Guizhou province in........ you guessed it, China in late 1956. It was called Asian Flu back then.

In times past I remember some discussion about where and how these differing strains of flu start up and back then I remember some scientific study claiming that it was something to do with a mixture of viruses from pigs and birds (predominatly ducks and geese) all being kept in close proximity causing some cross-contamination before the virus jumped to humans.

All things considered, isn't it about time the World in general and China in particular got to grips with this recurring nightmare and prevent it happening yet again?

Re: Covid-19.

The pneumonia stemming from flu, is bacterial pneumonia for which there is a vaccine, that from Covid19, is viral pneumonia, quite different.

Re: Covid-19.

Hmmmm, read this:-

Viral pneumonia is a complication of the viruses that cause colds and the flu It accounts for it accounts for about one third of pneumonia cases. The virus invades your lungs and causes them to swell, blocking your flow of oxygen.

Many cases of viral pneumonia clear up on their own within a few weeks. However, severe cases can be life-threatening. In 2014, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) ranked pneumonia combined with the flu as the 8th leading cause of death in the U.S.

The two most common causes of pneumonia are bacteria and viruses. The flu is one of the most common causes of viral pneumonia in adults, though post-flu complications can also cause bacterial pneumonia.

Depending on the type of infection you have, your doctor may prescribe an antiviral medication to reduce viral activity. Your doctor may prescribe one if your condition is diagnosed early. It’s important to understand that antibiotics will not treat viral pneumonia, because a virus, not bacteria, causes it.

The flu virus can be a direct cause of viral pneumonia. The CDC says that everyone 6 months or older should get the seasonal flu vaccine. The only exceptions are people who have had allergic reactions to flu vaccines or eggs, and people who have had Guillain-Barre syndrome.

Re: Covid-19.

The pneumococcal vaccine protects against serious and potentially fatal pneumococcal infections. It's also known as the pneumonia vaccine.

Pneumococcal infections are caused by the bacterium Streptococcus pneumoniae and can lead to pneumonia, septicaemia (a kind of blood poisoning) and meningitis.

https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/vaccinations/pneumococcal-vaccination/

It protects against bacterial pneumonia so it won't help to stop you developing viral pneumonia.
