There you go again - we did NOT do very well economically before our membership of the EU.

Sure London was great, safe and good place to live during the reigns of the likes of the Kray twins and Rachman!

No more of a fantasy than declaring the years prior to joining the EU were better economically and socially 🙂

Re: Brexit never gonnae happen they way you think!

As I said earlier, there were pro's and con's to life as it was to life as it is. Using the simplest comparisons we do live longer, we generally enjoy better health, we have access to things much earlier in life, we holiday more regularly than ever and we travel further often to areas that were once only visited by naturalists, academics and explorers. Look at the way our eating habits have changed, Fish and Chip shops were the staple and visited once or twice a month, now between Indian, Thai, Chinese, Italian, KFC, You name we have it and we use them more and more.

If anything, we take much more for granted and are less willing to accept compromise than we used to be. We are certainly more opinionated and whilst we scoff when challenged that is largely down to the media we choose to read, watch or listen to and of course the way we were raised. I believe people are far more selfish with a me me me attitude than ever before and debating is difficult as few are prepared to acknowledge when a good opposing point is made.

So where once Robin Day with his trademark bow tie and Glasses ripped into the odd bent politician putting them on the spot, we would watch and think wow that's got him, now we get Robert Peston up against a coached and mentored Politician quite happy to give the same statement time after time resulting in frustration and disatisfaction with our elected members. We also have the likes of Jeremy Kyle making a living out of the misfortune of our feral community, worth watching to demonstrate just how far society has developed and how much freedom of choice affects the young and their offspring.

But what does any of this have to do with Brexit? There are many good things I remember not least the large open spaces and abundance of wildlife, wherever I go now I see more housing going up, much needed apparently, more than anything else Immigration on the scale wehave had to endure is the thing that tipped the balance and as yet no one on here has responded to the problem of our own disenfranchised young people and why so many demand so much but don't expect to give anything in return.

I don't remember people starving or with no clothes on their backs pre 1975.

You can spin it anyway you like but as a nation we did very well before all this EU claptrap.

We as a nation are not suffering from Alzheimer's and not required to hand over legal guardianship to a bunch of idiots in Brussels to handle our day to day affairs,...Your dad was and is wrong in his thinking and it seems the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Re: Brexit never gonnae happen they way you think!

Who gives a flying? Remember it's 2016 everyone is right and to doubt that is disrespectful. People judge things based on their own experience or choice of media feed. In many ways the 50s-60s were more clear cut they signalled the start of true independence, freedom and you never had it so good. But Britain has had to adjust, to reset it's production and industrial focus. The coal fields, such a fight in the 70s yet the environment was killing people as was the product. The Transition from  a job for life to being constantly dispensable, the ability to have a close intimate relationship free from the threat of an end result. Meanwhile with all the change going on we voted to enter into a freemarket with our neighbours rather than spend millions in conflict with them. It was good to start with then it was hijacked and we were snared by the desire of its founding fathers to turn europe into a federation controlled by the Germans and French.

Now we have decided to leave and to plough our own furrow. Supporters of this are convinced we will be better off, opponents disagree. Because the vote was close there has to be some acceptance of opponents views and concerns yet the brexit camp say no way we want a divorce, they must dance to our tune and we will prosper as a result.

Those who formed the opposition to our membership have been largely condemned, Gove in Coventry, Leadsom in a minor cabinet role and Boris in the Foreign Office where he will be a complete embarassment. We have David Davis ready to steer us through the quagmire and Theresa May hoping it will all go away. Through all of this is the simple fact that Britain has too many incomers and the pressure it has created is unbearable. There must be a way out however I suggest you avoid Dover unless you have plenty of time on your hands.

Hoi, Boris had a good first week by all accounts. He surprised a lot of those he met and also a lot he didn't.

Anyway, how about people just stop all the negativity eh? We're going to leave the EU so how about just getting on with the job and making a success of the new rules, the new ball and the new playing field?

Re: Brexit never gonnae happen they way you think!

Am I misreading that article?

"Plans to build the first new UK nuclear plant in 20 years have suffered an unexpected delay after the government postponed a final decision until the early autumn."

"Earlier this year, EDF's finance director, Thomas Piquemal, had resigned amid reports he thought Hinkley could damage EDF itself."

"The French state, which owns 85% of EDF, will buy €3bn worth of new shares in the fundraising.

But Mycle Schneider, who used to advise the French government on nuclear and environmental issues, told the BBC that neither the state nor the company were fully on board."

"There is now a large front inside EDF, inside the nuclear establishment in France, advising against the construction because the sheer size of it could put not only the company EDF at risk, but this could actually put the whole state finances at risk."

Re: Brexit never gonnae happen they way you think!

I agree, so much money on one project and the risk, it's all too risky. What we need are more renewables, treadmills in detention centres, wind farms that won't impact negatively on wildlife or the scenic vistas. Iron works that can run on methane from herds of jersey cows all plumbed in and hooked up to a national gas grid. Free extra strong mints for pensioners and the establishment of knitting Clubs to provide additional warm winter clothing. All it needs is a bit of imagination.

Personally I'm in favour of nuclear power - what I'm not in favour of is paying foreign governments to build the power stations and ending up having British consumers pay billions of pounds to a foreign government each year for their energy.

That link has obviously been updated since I posted it.  Hinkley C was all over our local news yesterday and sounded like a done deal.

That is exactly what I have been thinking. You can debate all this until you are blue in the face, but  it's done now, so just get on with it and see where it leads us.
