5th Feb 2025 - The eBay app no longer works on my iPhone SE

All they have to do is stop the “update required” popup from arriving on older devices, as it completely disables the app. I have two iPhone SE models, one for home and one for work, with both running the maximum iOS 15.8.3

Their prompt to “download the last compatible version” does not resolve this situation.
This has been going on for 24 hours now.

5th Feb 2025 - The eBay app no longer works on my iPhone SE

An eBay Community Manager has posted this announcement for all app users:

The latest eBay app version is no longer compatible with android 9 and below. It actually requires OS android 10 and above. If you have another device with android 10 and above you can check the most recently updated eBay app version and see if you can view images.

If you are using OS android 10 and above and still have issues with viewing images on the app please let me know. State what version you use and type of device and I'll have it looked into further by tech.

According to a post on the UK community boards, the latest version of the eBay app requires Android 10 or later, or iOS 17 or later.

https://community.ebay.co.uk/t5/Technical-Issues/Pictures-missing-using-APP/m-p/7762881/highlight/tr...

There is another version of the app available for iOS 16 users; see here:

If you cannot upgrade your operating system or find an older version of the app that works with your current operating system, you should still be able to use a browser to go to ebay.co.uk instead.

If eBay browser links are opening in the Android version of the app automatically, you can disable that by going to your device Settings: Apps: eBay: Open by default: Opens supported links and choosing "Don't open in the app". iOS users can tap and hold an eBay browser link and choose "Don't open in the app".

The app has worked perfectly okay on my devices for the last few years without any issues at all. That was until Monday, two days ago, when eBay decided to remove compatibility.

This elitist action is nothing but punishment for anyone who is unfortunate enough to be less well off.

Obviously they are laughing their backsides off at those of us who have spent thousands of pounds here over the years.

Just because you did not notice any issues does not necessarily mean it "worked perfectly".

A lot of folks thought that Kryptonite bicycle locks "worked perfectly" right up until it became widely known those locks could be opened by anyone with a pen.

A smoke alarm with a dead battery may seem to have "worked perfectly" until there is a fire.

Standards evolve over time; sometimes a security issue forces an update, and not everything can be backwards compatible endlessly.

You can buy or sell using a mobile browser on your phone instead of the app.

I have an iPad Air 2 which cannot update. But for a brief time yesterday 07/02/25  It was working! They have changed the layout which would take some getting used to but everything was working fine and smoothly. But now all of a sudden it is demanding an update again. I’ve used eBay since 2007. Spent and sold £1000’s through them. I think eBay is playing with fire by cutting off a proportion of their customers like this.

The iPhone SE is a fantastic phone btw. I don’t see why I should part with mine just because the greedy companies want to sell more devices.

Obviously I'm not going to buy a new phone just to use eBay. If eBay want to shrink their user base, that's up to them.

If you can't use the app just sign into www.ebay.co.uk on your phone and use it that way

eBay are not rolling back updates so this is your only option from now on

Older apps and OS risk your online security - ebay has to move with the times to keep their site secure especially in the current climate

I don't believe eBay are failing to keep their app working on older phones based on a desire to keep me secure. Leap a couple of years into the future - the recent update you've just downloaded is now regarded as heinously dangerous. Can you trust it today??

Security is an arms race, and standards evolve over time. Many things that were reasonably secure ten years ago would be considered laughably insecure now, because there are new threats to security, and new tools that can easily bypass older security standards.

If two years from now a new standard comes along that is a hundred times more secure than what you use right now and everyone else adopts the new standard, you would be foolish to keep using the old security just because you believe that it worked fine two years ago.

Even if it did work fine two years ago, it may not work fine soon. Or even now.

Don't kid yourself - we're small fry! Ah well, fun while it lasted. Exactly
1 week shy of my 25th anniversary of being a member. Fun while it lasted
like I say.
