Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I’m a member for 14 years - I have today complained fiercely to EBay with regards to 4% + 75p charge on each item purchased as we all know this is a Back Door way of recovering the Seller Fees which were scrapped recently - Buyers already have adequate protection - as to payment 2 days after delivery - we’re at the mercy of Royal Mail to scan all  items when collected (not guaranteed) 😡

Fellow  members I urge you to let your disproval known - SHAME ON YOU Ebay😡😡

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

How will these buyer fees work with the global shipping program? It's 3% on items at the moment. Will it be 3% of the sale price after 4% plus 75p is added? Or are the buying fees only applicable to the uk?

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

I was reminder to despatch an item yesterday, which actually arrived with the buyer several days ago and has had feedback - they are definitely not keeping up!

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

Did I not read somewhere that the 4% fee would not be charged on items under £1?

As for switching from seller fees to buyer protection fees - I used to sell a lot of items at a fixed price of £4.25 with free postage. Under the old seller fees, and allowing for Large Letter costs and packaging, I ended up with £1.73. OK, not a fortune but I was happy (just breaking collections as a pensioner).

If I now ask for £1.73 but charge £1.70 for postage and packaging, the 4% (not applied to postage rates) + 75p flat fee, takes it to £4.25, I still get the same amount for myself and the buyer doesn't have to pay any extra.

That £1.73 is what I was happy with before the switch to 'free for sellers' introduction. Smiles all round, hopefully.

We've all made a few extra pennies/pounds over the past few months, but we were happy before that with what we got.

So I may have to wait a little longer for my money but I'm not that desperate.

Ha ha! Yeah, they're not there with an intention to save you money at all. Martin Lewis really doesn't seem to check up on them because I think he would be more on the public's side and explain things better like eBay.

If you took their advice you'd be too scared to sell anything on eBay apart from about 5 things that have only given you personal pleasure, strictly not for a penny's profit, and you had better made sure you kept all the receipts and noted down the price of everything that you ever bought in the past 30 years wherever you go in a little notepad that you take out of a grey anorak like a traffic warden ‌🤣

@the.real.paperman I've seen this question a couple times but have no idea where anyone is getting this idea - eBay has been very clear and explicit: The Buyer Protection fee is applied to all listings by UK-based private sellers, excluding Cars, Motorcycles & Vehicles, Classified Ads, and Property.

That's it - there is no exception at a certain price point and nowhere in any of eBay's policy or FAQ pages that says items under £1 are exempt.

This was also asked about in the most recent weekly chat and eBay staff confirmed the buyer fees will apply even on transactions under 99p.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

"Under the old seller fees"

I'm guessing you mean the sellers fees of 10%, but these were reduced fortnightly to 70% or 80% "off" so most of us made a bit more of a profit.

That said, if you're happy to continue selling and enjoy it and have actually worked out the profit you are making, that's great. I wish you luck

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

21 years for me too. I'm selling stock I have left and then leaving too. I also raised a complaint and they said everything will have to be tracked because there will be no other option. I have spoken to a few people at eBay and they really don't care. I was told that my complaint would not make a difference because the rules are the rules. We all need to leave

The new rules don't affect properly registered businesses who have business accounts.

The people that feel every thread is the perfect opportunity for them to vent their miserable personal political agendas (and we've had a post or two on here like that) are equally as annoying.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

WRONG... we didn't ALL get these fortnightly offers.   Mine stopped in Feb 2023, as did most others I think.
From then to Oct 2024 I was paying full fees (around 15% in total on my gross sale)

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

This is absolutely ridiculous, I sell many items at £1.50 plus £1.30 postage. So now it will cost £1.50 plus 75p plus 4% plus £2.80 tracked postage. No one is going to pay that much so it's looking like it's off to ebid for me.

Private sellers no longer pay fees - who does 'too' refer to?

Sellers will be charged 4% + 75p.

Other sites already charge buyers a fee.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

It is Buyers who will be charged the BPF... The "other sites" don't offer a money back guarantee already... that is their " terms and conditions " from the outset which sellers and buyers agreed to when signing up.

There is no benefit whatsoever in paying a BPF when there is a free MBG already in place with eBay, all it shows is that Private Sellers will no longer have access to their funds until eBay decide to release them.

Re: Upcoming ‘Buyer Protection Fees’

That  is why they are " holding funds"... Private sellers  will have no control, they will refund using A.I./automation  and there will be nothing the seller can do.
